Public Practice Announce Debut LP 'Gentle Grip', Stream "Compromised"

NYC no wave/post punk/alt band Public Practice have announced the release of their debut album 'Gentle Grip'.

According to the press, with gentle grip public practice reanimate the spirit of late ‘70s new york with their playfully angular yet thoughtful brand of no wave-meets-funk and dark disco. It will be out on May 15 via Wharf Cat Records. Pre-order your copy here.

Magnetic singer and lyricist Sam York and guitarist and principal sonic architect Vince McClelland (who previously played together as members of the meteoric yet short-lived NYC post-punk outfit wall) come to the table with an anarchic perspective that aims to eradicate creative barriers by challenging the very idea of what a song can be. Paradoxically, drew citron, on bass/vocals/synth, and drummer/producer Scott Rosenthal (both previously of Brooklyn indie-pop favorites Beverly) are uncannily adept at working within the framework of classic pop structures. But instead of clashing, these contrasting styles challenge and complement one another, resulting in an album full of spiraling tensions and unexpected turns.

Lyrically, York explores the complexities and contradictions of modern life overtop dance-inducing rhythms and choruses that disarmingly open up the doors to self-reflection.

Of the new single, York says “’Compromised’ deals with the moral gymnastics that many of us struggle with daily just to be a human in this world. How do we balance our desire for material pleasures with our need to be seen as moral and good? What’s more important, the shoe or where it came from? How it was made or how it looks? I am no shining example and I struggle with this constantly.”

Check out the album's tracklist and watch the video for "Compromised" below.

Gentle Grip Tracklist:

New Entry: Fantastic Twins Airs New Track "Read My Palmer, Laura"

French electronic/psych artist Fantastic Twins (aka producer Julienne Dessagne) has aired her infectious new track "Read My Palmer, Laura".

The song features on the 'Bongo Beats & Bankruptcy: The Sound of I'm a Cliché' compilation, set to be released on March 27 through I'm a Cliché. Pre-order it here.

Aesthetically coherent and simultaneously diverse in its expressions, Bongo Beats & Bankruptcy is a celebration of the label (and the label manager’s) quirks and eccentricities and a tongue-in-cheek snapshot that brilliantly captures the label’s DNA, featuring friends and allies along with newer faces on 13 exclusive tracks scattered over 3 LPs.

Whether they are downtempo, uptempo or ambient like Orestt's contribution, each tune on this compilation distills in its own idiosyncratic way I’m a Cliché’s essence: electronic music influenced by club culture but in no way constrained to the dancefloor. Ivan Smagghe & Marc Collin’s analog synth track by their acclaimed Volga Select project, June’s dreamy tune at the crossroads between wave and kraut influences, Coy’s mutant synth arpeggios, and an old-school wave cut by Oliver Decrow mixed by Dunkeltier are all tracks boldly standing on the dancefloor's margins.

For those looking for club-ready tracks that with I’m a Cliché’s one-of-a-kind atmosphere will surely find what they are after in an downtempo edit of Awkward Corners, a bouncy and melodic IDM not IDM number by Rouge Mécanique, a bleeps & pan-pipes affair by Benoît B, an esoteric dance-rock number with stated Lynch influences by Fantastic Twins, a freaky electro cut by Linja, a melancholic 707 driven banger by Krikor and finally an anxious and forward-thinking half-stepper by label head Cosmo Vitelli.

Ringo Deathstarr Announce Self-Titled LP, Stream "God Help The Ones You Love"

Texas shoegaze pioneers Ringo Deathstarr have announced the release of their new studio album ‘Ringo Deathstarr’.

The 11-track record, including their new single "God Help The Ones You Love", will be out via Club AC30 on March 27th. Pre-order your copy here.

‘Ringo Deathstarr’ poetically sees the band in a stage of personal and musical maturity. A staple of the genre with a rich back catalogue of revered material, it’s on their sixth full length that Ringo Deathstarr address the kind of themes that can only come from life experience.

It is a dynamic, introspective psychedelia, multi-layered album with Frazer and bassist Alex Gehring’s trademark, gorgeous, duel harmonies. ‘Nagoya’ opens with cinematic ambience before the groove-laden gothic allure of ‘God Help The Ones You Love’ and ‘Gazin’. An upbeat, more direct shoegaze bristling with a precision and confidence that’s rarely captured with such energy, and the 90s seeped ‘Once Upon A Freak’ as well as ‘Be Love’ elevate the bands now iconic sound pallet.

Elsewhere the reverb-soaked and dark 80s post-punk of ‘In Your Arms’ and ‘Heaven Obscured’ continue to show a band unwilling to stick to the rule book, with poppier sensibilities, while ‘Lazy Lane’ and ‘The Same Again’ showcase their more lo-fi and garage-rock leanings. And in true Deathstarr fashion album closer ‘Cotton Candy Clouds’ sees us out with a climatic cacophony of guitar work and riotous power from drummer Daniel Coborn.

Check out the album's tracklist and listen to "God Help The Ones You Love", below.

Nation Of Language Announce Debut LP 'Introduction, Presence', Stream "Rush & Fever"

Brooklyn post punk/new wave/synth-pop outfit Nation Of Language have announced the release of their highly-anticipated debut album 'Introduction, Presence'.

The 10-track album will be out on April 3. Pre-order your copy here.

Inspired by the early new wave and punk movements, Nation of Language's energetic anthems achieve a blend of upbeat energy with a healthy dose of sardonic melancholy. Their live performances have earned them a reputation for delivering frenzied nights of unexpected bliss.

"Nation of Language was sparked by a period of personal awakening around early new wave," says vocalist Ian Devaney, discussing the origins of the group. "Specifically, as I was listening to a version of OMD's 'Electricity,' It occurred to me that a moment in time existed when it seemed everyone still had a kind of 'beginner's mind' about how synthesizers could be used and fit into the musical landscape. They were wielding this technology as a blunt instrument, and it felt like I had been given permission to do the same."

The two-year process of creating Introduction, Presence involved both musical exploration and self-discovery. Nation of Language went into their rehearsal space without an agenda and simply experimented with new instruments to see what sounds came out. "There's something fascinating to me about how emotions can present themselves when one is unsure of what exactly they're doing," Ian continues. "It's important to me that people feel that core of innocence and pure discovery out of which these songs were born."

These powerful emotions transcend time and genre, and they have endeared Nation of Language to concertgoers who have had the opportunity to witness their live act, as well as listeners who have come across their early singles as if discovering a hidden secret.

"I hoped in making this album to create the space to openly ache for something," Ian concludes. "My favorite songs have always allowed me to indulge in a kind of longing, and this album was designed very simply to afford the same room to the listener. If I can build the structure to effectively pass that along to other people, I'll feel like I've done something worthwhile."

Tim Burgess Announces New LP 'I Love The New Sky', Airs "Empathy For The Devil"

Tim Burgess (The Charlatans) has announced the release of his fifth solo album 'I Love The New Sky'.

The the follow-up to 2018's As I Was Now, will arrive on May 22 through Bella Union, and according to the press release, "it features wonderfully connective songs of everyday minutiae and universal experience, of love and anger, of loss and belonging, all united by elaborate yet natural arrangements and an effortless but deceptively expert way with melody."

I Love The New Sky differs from its predecessors in that all twelve tracks were self-penned. I Love The New Sky lands somewhere between Paul McCartney's RAM and Brian Eno's Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) and certainly that recipe covers both the all-pervasive tunefulness and high quality. Stylistically, though, it runs the widest gamut, from Empathy For The Devil's gospel style rockabilly skip, through to the sophisticated song-craft of Sweetheart Mercury and the Nilsson-esque Sweet Old Sorry Me, with the angst-y gravitas of Undertow, which Tim describes as “a mood-changer, influenced by 10cc.”
