Speaking about it, Kele Okereke says: “There was no specific incident that inspired this song – it was more a composite of lots of things I’ve seen over the years when being in clubs and seeing violence erupt with feuding love rivals. I’ve always had a slight obsession with those sorts of moments; like a fuse being lit, when actions turn from words into violence. You can learn a lot about who people really are in those moments. I think ‘The Girls Are Fighting’ is kind of self-explanatory – someone’s been selling dreams to someone they shouldn’t have and it’s caught up with them. I just wanted to capture that moment of going from naught to ten in an evening, in a sweaty nightclub. I’m really pleased with the arrangement for this track because it has this 1970s glam rock feel meets Adam Ant feel. I love what Louise is doing on the tom toms.”

The amount of times each of us have gone home or out with old friends and the first question has been ‘Are you still working in the café?’ to which the answer still remains an awkward, ‘eh…yes.’ There are psychological benchmarks of success we all feel like we should hit, and we’re all guilty of mapping out our future timelines and expectations. The reality is that there really isn’t anything further from the truth. Life is unpredictable, it weaves and bobs, it meanders and sometimes sprints, but each path is unique and incomparable.”

The song is part of our current playlist and is taken from their highly-anticipated debut album 'Council Pop', which will be out on April 8 2022 featuring their new single . Pre-order your copy here.

The track narrates the mischievous nature of a fictional socialite character who we will have all met at some point in our lives. The absorbent kind that becomes over enthused by the smallest of occasions, takes on the role of Andy Murray during Wimbledon and Tyson Fury when there’s a boxing pay-per-view.

“Ambition is an admirable trait and I’m a strong advocate for having dreams that we live and die by. However, it is important to ensure that whilst chasing our dreams we are aware of the bigger picture that is life. In order to grow and maintain a realistic outlook on life it is important to acknowledge that defeat is very much possible and as individuals we aren’t invincible." - Mikey

Loose Fit Announce New LP 'Social Graces', Stream Title Track

Sydney no wave/post punk quartet Loose Fit have announced the release of their new studio album 'Social Graces'.

Set for release on April 26 through FatCat Records, the record features 11 tracks of rhythmically-taut, anxiety-driven post-punk featuring the distinctive vocal chants of singer/sax player Anna Langdon. Pre-order your copy here.

Building on the success of their self-titled EP, the album expands the Loose Fit sound-world to include a dub-influenced march through social media bleakness, ACR-style exercises in rhythm and tension, and an atmospheric coda featuring eerie trumpet from drummer Kaylene Milner. It also features a number of the band’s concise, propulsive bangers including the title track and previous single ‘Exhale

Social Graces is a journey through familiar deeply human themes as well as sharp observations of contemporary absurdity. Lyrics about love, hope, fear, loss, and pain are woven amongst visual depictions of acquisition culture, weather patterns, digital life, adventures in wild landscapes, deep introspection, parties and mundane daily experiences.

“I think the album is a truthful document of a weird time. Covid-era has sucked (of course), but did give us time to explore new sounds and ways of working. It was a shit time to be a band, but it was great to have a vessel to channel all our anxieties and pent-up energy into. I think the album has all that fucked-up 2020/2021 energy in it.”, Bassist Richard Martin says.

New single - also called ‘Social Graces’ - is a frantic 2’29” blast of nervy punk. The song was written in 2020 inspired by the nervous tension in the air after the initial months of covid-induced house arrest. People were finally allowed to meet in the federally sanctioned groups of 5, but found themselves too nervous to touch each other for fear of infection and felt awkward in communication. There was a sense of relearning how to be together.

It comes with a video, directed by Solomon Thomas, that riffs off the song’s themes of discomfort and social anxiety. Awkwardly miming in front of vintage painted stage backdrops, the band are transformed one-by-one into grotesquely-masked characters who try and fail to find the social “normal”.

The Kooks Announce '10 Tracks to Echo in the Dark', Stream "Connection"

Brighton, UK indie rockers The Kooks have announced the release of their sixth studio album '10 Tracks to Echo in the Dark'.

The follow-up to 2018’s Let's Go Sunshine will be released in 3 parts, with the full album set to arrive on July 22 via Lonely Cat / AWAL Recording, the first EP, ‘Connection –  Echo in the Dark Part 1’ is out now. Pre-order your copy here.

Speaking about writing and recording the LP in Berlin, frontman Luke Pritchard says, alluding to the city's rich musical history, that "A lot of songwriters have found refuge in Berlin. It's a free place, it's not so consumed by commercialism."

"I was looking for something a bit rawer, a little bit more minimal. Sometimes you just pick up these nuances somewhere. It's not necessarily the people, it's the place."

Some of the songs were written in the context of Pritchard getting married and becoming a father for the first time. "I really hope that sense of inner peace comes across," says Pritchard on the changes in his life.

"I really want to have fun with my life at this point. But also - it's kinda a reflection of what I was feeling in real-time in a pre-and-post COVID world. I was reading a lot of sci-fi – like Philip K. Dick, Azimov and surreal stuff like Boris Vian – which is obviously really distracting from what's going on in the world, but helped me be imaginative with the songs."

Rip Room Announce New LP 'Alight and Resound', Stream "Worth Repeating"

San Francisco art punk band Rip Room have announced the release of their debut full-length album 'Alight and Resound'.

Recorded with engineer Tim Green (Nation of Ulysses, Melvins, Bikini Kill, Sebadoh), the 12-track album will be out on May 27 through Spartan Records. Pre-order your copy here.

The record features pulsing songs that harken back to better musical times while somehow embracing the relevance of the moment. Think Unwound, Sleater-Kinney, and Fugazi. Propulsive rhythms and piercing lyrics, but with a sense of buoyancy. Brashness over banality. Wolves in sheep’s clothing.

“I wanted to be in a fun, high-energy band, but with a math-y, prog edge,” says vocalist/guitarist John Reed. “We’re always looking to capture our live sound, and with this record, we wanted that plus a little more to emphasize some ideas or sonic feelings,” adds bassist/vocalist Sarah McKinney. “The subject matter is pretty heavy, but the execution is sometimes a bit more lighthearted and dance-y which I think balances it out well. Our sound was once described as ‘dance music for people who don’t like to dance,’ which I don’t agree with — I’d say it’s ‘dance music for people who like to dance but are also bummed out’.”

Thematically, while instrumentally effervescent, 'Alight and Resound' delves into some more turbulent lyrical waters. Loneliness, chaos, despair, and struggle — yet somehow with a glimmer of hope. “The title of the record is a lyric from the song ‘Get On In The World,’ which is in part about frustration and not really fitting in,” says Reed. “Everyone’s focused or too wrapped up in their own shit and sadly this too often devolves into misunderstandings, at best, and violence, at worst. Alight and Resound is like a plea — move to a different plane of understanding and empathy or else we’re fucked.”

Alight and Resound is a testament to the power of seeking brashness over banality. There is perceptible life and light in the recordings that grow with each listen, and the authenticity of the experience is both palpable and revitalizing.

Check out the album's tracklist and the video for their new single "Worth Repeating", below.

New Entry: Home Counties Unleash New Single "Village Spirit"

English indie rock/punk/alt band Home Counties have unleashed their new single "Village Spirit".

The song is taken from their upcoming second EP 'In A Middle English Town', set to arrive on 11th February via Alcopop! Records.

Speaking about it, singer Will Harrison says: “The song is based on a book by historian Alain Corbin, Village of Cannibals, which is about the murder of a nobleman in late nineteenth century France. Based on rumours, the whole village was whipped up into a frenzy and ended up brutally torturing and murdering the nobleman. The lyrics focus on the contrast between positivity of place-based collectivism, and the meaning it can bring, and the often tragic consequences of it. It’s a really messed up story, and contrasts what is probably one of our most gentle and melodic songs.”

Going back to 2008, Oliver Chapoy (who also appears on the new Deserta album) and I contributed a remix for her album, Murmurs. The following year Caroline sang on Saxon Shore's "This Place" (also produced/mixed by Dave Fridmann). We kept in touch over the years, always trying to connect on something new, but life happens and timing is often hard to get right. With the unpredictability of the last year, I think it was comforting to finally reconnect with some of my favorite collaborators, even from a distance."

New Entry: Media Giant Premiere New Single "Guilt/Shame"

London art pop/alt band Media Giant have premiered their new single "Guilt/Shame".

The song, written and produced by the trio, is out now through Brace Yourself Records, and is the follow up to their debut single 'Afraid of The Dark'. Get it here.

UPDATE 01/02/2022: "Guilt/Shame" is our new Single of the Week!

A statement from Media Giant HQ reads simply: At Media Giant, we know what you want. Since the successful launch of our debut product, we have been working tirelessly to bring you our second offering, which is titled “Guilt/Shame” - You may notice feelings of hostility or anger when listening to it, but do not be alarmed, this is entirely intentional."

Drawing on funk, disco and punk elements, their music is reminiscent of Bowie, Talking Heads and The Rapture, all while creating a deeply unique, daring sound of their own that separates them from their peers.

The crossover experimentations and hook-driven melodies of 'Guilt/Shame' make for a thrilling listening experience. Its philosophical lyrics are drenched in playful irony, further elevated by the cheery sound that contradicts its darker societal observations: "Is it guilt or is it shame, that keeps us from killing each other, that keeps us sane? / You'd rather die of a sun-tan, in a plastic wasteland, than admit you were wrong about anything."

Walt Disco Announce Debut LP 'Unlearning', Stream "How Cool Are You?"

Glasgow post punk/glam band Walt Disco have announced the release of their debut full-length album 'Unlearning'.

The 12-track record will be out on April 1st through Lucky Number. Pre-order your copy here.

Walt Disco are a collection of misfits from Glasgow who look like they've just been turned away from the Blitz club by Steve Strange and are standing in the rain wondering what to do. Their music is dramatic synth pop that owes a lot to the likes of Sparks and The Associates and a little more to Gary Numan and Visage.

Unlearning is steeped in metamorphoses, a stage show in two acts. It covers flings and romances, identities and bodies and change, profound familial love, and - of course - Hollywood glamour. The album plays out like a musical, with an emotional arc and even an instrumental interlude, winkingly titled ‘The Costume Change’.

While the themes of the album are universally relatable, Walt Disco’s gift is in the unique experience of discovery and heartbreak between queer people - something that frontperson James explores in depth on songs such as ‘Weightless’, ‘Be An Actor’ and ‘Hold Yourself As High As Her’. In Walt Disco’s eyes, it’s never too late to become what you might have been and there are plenty of possibilities to explore on Unlearning.

Check out the album's tracklist and the video for their new single "How Cool Are You?", below.

Unlearning Track list:
01. Weightless
02. Selfish Lover
03. How Cool Are You?

The song is taken from their forthcoming greatest hits collection 'Hits To The Head', which will be out 11 March 2022 via Domino Record Co. Pre-order your copy here.

Talking about the song, lead singer Alex Kapranos said: "What’s the meaning behind the song? A meet-cute on the first page as tension enters left on a dark stage, but as our stars collide I’m curious: will you want me when you’ve got me? I’m a future seeker. Are we the future? I’m curious. I had this idea for the lyric — kind of the reverse of one of those life-flashing-before-your mind as you die in a film scene, where the entire course of a relationship flashes before you the instant you fall in love with someone."

About the video, he added: "So, it's a dance song we said later on when thinking about a video. And 'we've always said we play dance music,' said Bob, 'so why don't we dance in the video?' So we gave Andy Knowles, our old pal - who was in Bob's class at Art School and played with Franz Ferdinand in 2005/6 - a shout and he was up for it. You can spot his cameo.... and, yes, that is us actually dancing."

Blossoms Announce New LP 'Ribbon Around The Bomb', Stream Title Track

Manchester indie rock/psych pop band Blossoms have announced the release of their new album titled 'Ribbon Around The Bomb'.

The follow up to their 2018's album Cool Like You, was produced by James Skelly & Rich Turvey and  will be released on 29th April on Virgin EMI. Pre-order your copy here.

Speaking about the new album and single, Blossoms frontman Tom Ogden said: "While on tour in 2019 in Mexico, I visited Frida Kahlo’s house. Looking at her paintings on show, someone had described one of them as being like a ‘ribbon around a bomb’. I immediately thought that it was a great title for a song and album because of the imagery that it evoked in my mind. I thought about how lots of things in life could be described as being a ribbon around a bomb in the sense that as people we often dress things up which have a darkness lying beneath them".

“The more songs I wrote, the more I realised that the writer referenced in the songs was in fact me,” Ogden continues. “Having been so busy for the past eight years I and the band have never really had the chance to step back and reflect on what we’ve achieved. You’re so focused on the future; write the next album then tour. Your life is usually mapped out at least two years in advance.”
