Lincoln indie rock/alt/punk band The Rills have revealed their new single "Stardog".

Speaking about it, frontman Mitch Spencer explains: “The Stardog is an amalgamation of the small town dealers that I knew growing up in Lincoln. He’s very much a big fish in a small pond. The more quiet and boring the place, the more likely you are to find drugs in my experience – Stardog is the embodiment of that; works a normal job on weekdays but becomes a satirical Pablo Escobar at the weekends.”

Watch: Youth Sector Premiere New Single/Video "Teeth"

Brighton art-rock band Youth Sector have premiered the video for their new single "Teeth".

Taking inspiration from late 70s/80s-era funk, most notably in the joyful interaction of the guitars and the bass, on ‘Teeth’ the band reference Nile Rogers and CHIC’s knack for penning interesting, active instrumentals whilst remaining totally accessible and never overwhelming or self-indulgent.

UPDATE 30/11/2020: "Teeth" is our new Single of the Week!

Commenting on the track, which is laced with one of the most unforgettable bass grooves of the year, the band said: “‘Teeth’ sees us continue to push into more rhythmic territory and embrace the influence of funk bands Parliament and Tower Of Power, with its constant danceable groove punctuated by wonky guitars throughout. Lyrically the single explores the sinister magnetism of untrustworthy people and the way they can enter the lives of those vulnerable to their charms.”

Youth Sector’s music is a coiled spring of urgency and unpredictable energy, while lyrically offering a sense of catharsis for the confusion of modern adult life. Regimented drum beats and saw-tooth synth sounds are matched with erratic, dynamic vocals.

“We’re drawn to the balance between making something sound interesting and exciting while keeping it melodic and catchy,” explains front man Nick Tompkins of their approach to writing. “It's a difficult but enjoyable line to tread. Lyrically the idea of writing through the eyes of a character is something that grabs me particularly, as it helps me to empathise with and explore perspectives that I don't hold myself, as well as use characters to demonstrate more serious frustrations I have with the world.”

New Entry: Communions Unveil New Single "Splendour"

Danish post-punk/guitar band Communions have unveiled their new single "Splendour".

The song is out today (November 27) via Tambourhinoceros. Buy it here.

While “Splendour” still features the contributions of ex-bandmates Jacob van Deurs Formann (guitar) and Frederik Lind Köppen (drums), Communions are now solely led by the Rehof brothers, Martin and Mads. With their brotherly musical connection at the center, the Rehof brothers have assembled a new five piece constellation going forwards.

It is a song about “a sickly, unattainable love. One which possesses a destructive power.” Communions’ Martin Rehof sings of a “crowd of lovers” under the influence of a lust so intoxicating that it sends them “leaping in the grave”.

“I wouldn’t say that it’s necessarily about a specific person” says Martin Rehof, musing on the song’s multifarious meaning.  He continues: “Rather, in a less concrete sense, it’s about the oppressive power that certain things in life can have over you. For instance, making art is something I love, but not something I feel I can help, and often it can be quite painful and fruitless. It’s like this thing, whatever it is, has chosen you, and not the other way around. It might inflict you with pain, but you almost come to enjoy it; you sort of accept it, embrace it, and maybe even thrive on it. It’s the context of someone addicted to someone or something else — where the power dynamics are skewed.”

The song is out now through Nice Swan Records. Buy it here.

Speaking about it, frontman Junior Cobbinah, says: “I must’ve heard LCD Soundsystem’s New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down and thought the love-hate sentiment behind the tune mirrored the feelings I had, and still have, with London. The topic of the tune isn’t news to anyone but it felt necessary to document the confusion and sadness felt by how inaccessible and hostile the city is becoming to live in for most ordinary people who have most, if not all, of their lives here.”

The song, produced by Dan Carey (Bat For Lashes, Fontaines D.C.), is out now through Speedy Wundergound. Get it here.

Speaking about it, the group say: “Burn the Heather’ is a song deeply rooted in where we come from. The lyrics are our interpretation of some of the darker aspects of where we live, and our personal reaction to them. Musically, ‘Burn the Heather’ is intended to be an adrenaline shot to the brain. We wanted this to be the second single all along. We don’t want to be just another post-punk band, and we knew Heather would keep people on their toes. Unlike a lot of our tracks, the guitars are quite minimal and the rhythm really carries it, and we think it works really well. We want to make people move.”

The video was directed and edited by Nick Farrimond. Watch below.

New Entry: Wet Tropics Unleash New Single/Video "Cool California"

Chicago-based indie punks Wet Tropics have unleashed the video for their new single "Cool California"

The song is taken from their upcoming new album 'Everybody Get In', set to arrive on November 27th. Pre-order your copy here.

Produced by Rejba, Matt Holmes, and Jeff Dean, the 9-track album, was recorded at The Echo Mill by Holmes, mixed by Dean at The Deanery, and mastered by Adam Stilson.

On the album, it's not uncommon for Wet Tropics to playfully occupy the same hazy reverb-soaked space as post-punk forbearers Psychedelic Furs and the angular, art-damaged rock bombast of Ty Segall, Osees, or Jacuzzi Boys in the course of a single three-minute foray. Although the band's sound may lean to the West Coast, they haven't eschewed their Midwest roots entirely. You'll get those pungent whiffs of Pixies' and The Jesus and Mary Chain's cool anthemic college rock color mixes here too!

The band channels a wide range of '70s and '80s punk, post-punk, and indie-pop influences.

"Personal Computing" and the b-side "In The Future" were recorded just before the COVID-19 lockdown began and share a bittersweet nostalgia for an imagined rose-tinted future that never was.

Watch: Ventrelles Release New Single/Video "County Lines"

Manchester indie quartet Ventrelles have released the video for their new single "County Lines".

Headed by Phil Knox, the band fuses the styles of 80’s guitar groups such as Pale Fountains and Echo and the Bunnymen and sometimes darker tinged edges of The Chameleons and The Jesus and Mary Chain with a punchy delivery, sun soaked guitars, energetic rhythms, life affirming vocals and soulful bass lines.

Beginning as the pet project of songwriter Phil on his return home from living in Chicago, the initial experimental kick about project line up included Joe Kondras ( The Heartbreaks),  Christopher Deakin ( The Heartbreaks, By The Sea), Ben Parsons (Cherry Ghost/Miles Kane) Jason Goodwin (The Delaplains) and George Moran (Miles Kane/Mabel Love/ Last Shadow Puppets)

"I wanted to see what I could do with all the bits I’d accrued over the last few years whilst living abroad and just to have a laugh with mates after a particularly hard time, in an environment I knew and loved to be in. I felt I’d hit on something stylistically and soulfully that wasn’t necessarily happening on the radio at the moment, after the initial year of recording with friends just having a kick around, I decided to take things a step further and brought  in Connor, G-lo and Winny as a full time band"

Since the solid line up came together Ventrelles have been going from strength to strength, early releases ‘Stop’ and ‘Shutters’ caught the attention of Manchester imprint Black Bleach Records and the band went on to proving themselves as a standout live outfit on both the small and big stage. Unfortunately this years pandemic made the band re-think the way things were going and decided to hunker down in a studio and create more of the wonderfully scenic and magnetically attractive shimmer guitar Pop they were getting a name for on the live circuit.

Now with the aid of producer Dean Glover ( Twisted Wheel/Shotty Horrah) the band are set to make big waves in 2021.

The song will be out on November 27. Watch/listen below.

Shame Announce New LP 'Drunk Tank Pink', Stream "Water in the Well"

South London post punk/indie rock band Shame have announced the release of their sophomore album 'Drunk Tank Pink'.

The follow-up to 2018's debut Songs Of Praise, was produced by James Ford (Arctic Monkeys), and will be out on January 15th via Dead Oceans. Pre-order your copy here.

There are moments on Drunk Tank Pink where you almost have to reach for the sleeve to check this is the same band who made Songs Of Praise. Such is the jump Shame have made from the riotous post-punk of their debut to the sprawling adventurism and twitching anxieties laid out here. The South Londoner’s blood and guts spirit, that wink and grin of devious charm, is still present, it’s just that it’s grown into something bigger, something deeper, more ambitious and unflinchingly honest.

To cope, guitarist Sean Coyle-Smith barricaded himself in his bedroom. Barely leaving the house and instead obsessively deconstructing his very approach to playing and making music, he picked apart the threads of the music he was devouring (Talking Heads, Nigerian High Life, the dry funk of ESG, Talk Talk…) and created work infused with panic and crackling intensity.

“For this album I was so bored of playing guitar,” he recalls, “the thought of even playing it was mind-numbing. So I started to write and experiment in all these alternative tunings and not write or play in a conventional ‘rock’ way.”

Frontman Charlie Steen, meanwhile, took a different tac and attempted to party his way out of psychosis. “When you’re exposed to all of that for the first time you think you’re fucking indestructible,” he notes. “After a few years you reach a point where you realise everyone need a bath and a good night’s sleep sometimes.”

The genius of Drunk Tank Pink is how Steen’s lyrical themes dovetail with the music. Bassist Josh Finerty had begun to record the band’s divergent ideas at home in South London which were then fleshed out in a writing trip in the Scottish highlands with electronic artist Makeness, before sessions in La Frette studios in France with James Ford. The result is an enormous expansion of Shame’s sonic arsenal.

The band have also aired the video for the album track "Water in the Well". Watch it below the tracklist.

Songs Of Praise tracklist:

02. Nigel Hitter
03. Born in Luton

Watch: Pierce with Arrow Drop New Single/Video "In the Depths of His Eyes"

Berlin-based dark electronic duo Pierce with Arrow (aka Troy Pierce & Poison Arrow) have dropped the video for their new single "In the Depths of His Eyes".

The song is taken from their forthcoming debut album 'Shatter', which will be available on February 19, 2021 Dais Records. Pre-order your copy here.

The collaborative debut of American minimal techno producer Troy Pierce and Colombian audiovisual artist Natalia Escobar aka Poison Arrow was conceived in reverse: first they created a collection of shadowy surrealist videos, then wrote music inspired by them. This inverted process proved remarkably fruitful. Shatter is a simmering, slow-burn noir odyssey inspired by the Greek myth of Echo and Narcissus, traversing subtle shades of sleepwalker dub, metallic lament, broken beats, and erotic negative space. It's an effectively unsettling evocation of the legend's core theme: “There is nothing more complex than a shattered heart, or a heart that can't love.”

“In the Depths Of His Eyes proposes a reconfigured narcissism; a reimagining of Narcissus’ gaze into the pool, beyond self-absorption and vanity, to a moment of intrigue on the edge of introspection. Diving into the depths of the never-ending fall through states of transformation and re-creation.”

New Entry: Saccades Reveals New Single "Like Everyday"

Berlin-based psych pop/post punk musician Nicholas Wood aka Saccades (best known for making up one-half of The KVB)  has revealed his new single "Like Everyday".

The song is out today (November 18) via Fuzz Club and is the first taste of a new album set for release early next year. Get your copy here.

Wood described the song as a slice of Ballardian synth-pop, replete with breezy electronics, languid guitars and echo-soaked vocals: “This song was written back in spring and it's about the idea of someone living their life through watching another person's facade of luxury. This year I've often read about people spying on their neighbours because of lockdown and so I imagined this all taking place in a Ballard-esque world of paranoia, isolation and opulent high-rises set against a fizzy synth-pop soundtrack.”
