NewDad Reveal New Single/Video "ILY2" (Charli XCX cover)

Irish alt rock/slo-fi band NewDad have revealed the video for their cover version of Charli XCX "ILY2".

The cover is out now and is their first new music since their acclaimed EP ‘Banshee’, released earlier this year. Get it here.

The band, who recently left their native Ireland and relocated to London in order to write their debut album, mark a triumphant return with their infectious new cover of Charli XCX's 'ILY2'. It finds the band evolving into a bold pop beast, marked by front person Julie Dawson's bright, exuberant vocal and towering, dynamic production that raises the bar for one of the most lauded new artists of recent years.

This step up is reflected in the video as well, directed by Irish luminary Hugh Mulhern who's also lent his talents to the likes of Fontaines D.C., The Murder Capital and rising Irish fashion designer Simone Rocha. Rocha, who's styled Billie Eilish, Wolf Alice's Ellie Rowsell and now NewDad's own Julie for this video, is one of the fashion world's most hyped designers right now. The track itself was produced by Jacob Manson and mixed by Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, Arctic Monkeys, Beach House).

Julie Dawson say of the track: We’ve always been huge fans of Charli xcx and thought it could be cool to take one of her songs and make our own version. ILY2 with its distorted synths seemed like it could translate very well as a loud shoegazey song so we tried it out!"

Pixies Unleash New Single "Dregs of the Wine"

Boston alt rockers Pixies have unleashed their new single "Dregs of the Wine".

The song is taken from their eighth studio album 'Doggerel' will be out on September 30 via BMG. Pre-order your copy here.

Given Black Francis’ prolific songwriting, Joey’s contributions would usually be to build his distinctive style into his bandmate’s songs. But this time around it was the reverse approach, with Joey’s instrumental - a mix of explosive power chords that recall Pete Townshend and a pummelling punk attack - completed by Black’s decadent, surrealist lyrics, which reference Van Halen and Black Foxx while drinking under the iconic Hollywood sign.

Black says the song is about, “Living in Los Angeles in the ‘90s with my then-wife, hanging out with Joey and his ex-wife, lots of trips to Las Vegas, a lot of drinking, little bit drug taking, some genuine good times.”

Flashforward to the present day. Joey was jamming at home on his guitar and the initial idea behind the song may well have been lost to the moment. He recalls, “I guess I was in kind of a zombie state, just playing. After I stopped playing I put it down and went, ‘Well, that was a fucking waste of time, what a piece of shit I am.’ I beat myself up a lot, but my girlfriend, unbeknownst to me, was recording me. She played it back to me and I go, ‘Fuck! Hold on a second here! This stuff is good!’”

Pixies Drop New Single/Video "Vault of Heaven"

Boston alt rockers Pixies have dropped the video for their new single "Vault of Heaven".

The song is taken from their eighth studio album 'Doggerel' will be out on September 30 via BMG. Pre-order your copy here.

Mixing dusky, Morricone-style desert noir atmospherics with a chiming, melodic guitar motif, ‘Vault of Heaven’ also takes a leftfield turn as flourishes of female backing vocals provide an almost hymnal touch. Black Francis’s lyrics combine elements that are both abstract and everyday in a surrealist narrative, in which the protagonist aims for salvation but only ends up falling flat on his face.

‘Vault of Heaven’ is released alongside an official video which brings its absurdist tale to life. It begins with a semi-clothed Zorro-esque figure who is heading into Los Angeles on the back of a toy horse. He arrives at a 7-Eleven, where things get stranger still with the help of bizarre Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe lookalikes. The visual was directed by the filmmaker and musician Charles Derenne.

Pixies Announce New LP 'Doggerel', Stream "There's A Moon On"

Boston alt rockers Pixies have announced the release of their eighth studio album 'Doggerel'.

The band' seventh full-length and follow-up to 2019's Beneath the Eyrie,  will be out on September 30 via BMG. Pre-order your copy here.

‘Doggerel’ is a mature yet visceral record of gruesome folk, ballroom pop and brutal rock, haunted by the ghosts of affairs and indulgences, driven wild by cosmic forces and envisioning digital afterlives where no God has provided one. And all the while, right there on the news, another distant storm approaches.

Guitarist Joey Santiago says, “This time around we have grown. We no longer have under two-minute songs. We have little breaks, more conventional arrangements but still our twists in there.”

Vocalist/guitarist Black Francis adds,  “We're trying to do things that are very big and bold and orchestrated. The punky stuff, I really like playing it but you just cannot artificially create that shit. There's another way to do this, there's other things we can do with this extra special energy that we're encountering.”

Watch: NewDad Reveal New Single/Video "Banshee"

Irish alt rock/slo-fi band NewDad have revealed the video for their new single "Banshee".

The song is taken from their new EP ‘Banshee’, produced John Congleton, out today, February 9 via Fair Youth Records. Get it here.

Speaking about it with Dork, Julie Dawson said: "‘Banshee’ is the title track and probably my favourite off the EP. I adore the bassline and the main guitar and how they dance around each other. The idea behind the song is that you’re looking at someone who’s struggling, and you see they’ve become a shell of themselves, like a ghost, or a banshee, more specifically.

"Banshees are from Irish folklore, which I think is cool, and the idea that they herald the death of someone kinda ties in with the idea that this person is on their last legs."

New Entry: NewDad Premiere New Single "Say It"

Irish alt rock/slo-fi band NewDad have premiered their new single "Say It".

The song is taken from their forthcoming EP ‘Banshee’, produced John Congleton, out on the 9th of February via Fair Youth Records. Get it here.

From the band: “‘Say It’ is about unrequited love, about when someone is with you but not really, it’s supposed to capture that frustration you feel when you’re giving someone your all and they’re giving you nothing in return. The fast pace of the song makes it feel like I’m venting which works considering the feelings of irritation and bitterness I’m talking about when you don’t want to like someone but you can’t help it.”

Unfortunately, I was far less heroic, writing copy for a car insurance company. This song is about feeling embarrassed about how different our lives were at this time. When it comes to telling my grandchildren what all this was like, I’ll be telling them about my sisters who have more important stories to share.”

New Entry: Silverbacks Release New Single "Rolodex City"

Dublin indie punk/alt rock band Silverbacks have released their new single "Rolodex City".

The song is taken from their forthcoming sophomore album 'Archive Material', which will be out on Jan 21st 2022 on Full Time Hobby. Pre-order your copy here.

Speaking about it, vocalist Daniel O’Kelly said:  “Rolodex City is about a property mogul who has fallen on very hard times during a period where technology has changed the way his business and people work. Similar to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid getting caught out by the trains, bicycles and an increasingly small world, Mr Rolodex is running out of options. He visits a town in a barren landscape with the hope of flipping a bit of land, posing as whatever character the people there will trust - Rolodex City.

“Ultimately, our anti-hero has no luck and reluctantly ends his trip at a line dance led by Emma – feel free to join in!

“To help set the scene, we used a live drum sound and contrasting drum machine claps and mechanical percussion. The guitars are inspired by the twang of country music with some Verlaine techniques employed on the solo, for the riff spotters.”

Watch: Palace Premiere New Single/Video "Fade"

The song is taken from their highly anticipated third studio album 'Shoals', which will be out on January 21st 2022 via Fiction Records. Pre-order your copy here.

From the band: "‘Fade’ is a song about the link between the body and the mind- how our mind’s response to the body’s state can turn into mental paranoia, leading to an unhealthy fixation on where we go when we meet our maker. It's an anthem to paranoia and the feeling like you could explode with the fear of what will become."

Watch: NewDad Reveal New Single/Video "Ladybird"

Irish alt rock/slo-fi band NewDad have revealed the video for their new single "Ladybird".

The song is out today (October 26) via Fair Youth Records and is the first taste pf their forthcoming EP ‘Banshee’, produced John Congleton due out earlier next year. Get it here.

Ladybird was inspired by the Greta Gerwig’s film of the same name starring Saoirse Ronan. “I wrote the song after watching the film ‘Ladybird’, the chord progression reminded me of Dave Matthew’s song that’s played throughout the film so I initially named it after that, so ‘Ladybird’ was just a working title.” explains singer Julie.

“I then wrote the lyrics about the difficult part of relationships and the struggle we sometimes face when we’re away from someone and the fears and anxieties we have about what they’re doing or if they’re okay, I realised this coincided with the relationship between the mother and daughter in the film so the title ended up being pretty fitting. It’s about the give and takes in any relationship really and about the struggles of being away from someone you care about.”

Silverbacks Announce Debut LP 'Archive Material', Stream Title Track

Dublin indie punk/alt rock band Silverbacks have announced the release of their sophomore full-length album 'Archive Material'.

The follow-up to their 2020's debut Fad, was recorded at Dublin’s Sonic Studios in November 2020, with Girl Band bassist Daniel Fox undertaking production duties once more, and will be out on Jan 21st 2022 on Full Time Hobby. Pre-order your copy here.

In years from now, anyone seeking to make sense of what life was like during a global pandemic should extend their research beyond the newspaper clippings and dive into the art produced during the period. Archive Material - the aptly-titled second album by Dublin-based art-rock quintet Silverbacks - will make for a particularly illuminating listen on the subject. Capturing the absurd mixture of monotony and creeping disquiet experienced by many of us this past 18 months, it’s simultaneously sobering and wickedly droll.

Archive Material only cements Silverbacks’ status as one of Ireland’s most fascinating bands. It finds the band leaning into their early influences, delivering idiosyncratic indie-rock packed with intricate, Tom Verlaine-esque “guitarmony”. Other reference points for the record included Neil Young, Weyes Blood and - on ‘Wear My Medals’ in particular - Bradford Cox and Cate Le Bon’s collaborative record Myths 004.

Where Fad found Silverbacks focused on recapturing the live experience rather than reveling in studio experimentation, Archive Material skillfully traverses the line between the two. As a unit, they replicate that irrepressible live energy via complex arrangements incorporating everything from wistful Rhodes (‘Carshade’) to congas and Gang Of Four-style bass (‘Different Kind Of Holiday’)

Keenly observed and vividly rendered, Archive Material is an eye-witness account of human resilience as much as it is a compelling indie-rock record. Future historians take note.

Check out the album's tracklist and the video for "Archive Material" below.

Palace Announce New LP 'Shoals', Stream "Lover (Don't Let Me Down)"

London-based indie rock/alt band Palace have announced the release of their highly anticipated third studio album 'Shoals'.

The follow-up to 2019's Life After, will be out on January 21st 2022 via Fiction Records. Pre-order your copy here.

The 12-track record was written during the UK’s first coronavirus lockdown in 2020, during which forntman Leo Wyndham was forced to confront a number of mental health issues. “I’m one of those people who’s tried to run away from those fears and anxieties, but [during lockdown] I had a real feeling of ‘Shit, I can’t hide from this now’,” he told NME. “My brain was like a conveyer belt of negative thoughts and a feeling of purposelessness. When music was taken away, I started to wonder what the fuck my purpose was.”

‘Shoals’ is a profound and pensive album, boldly exploring some of life’s greatest questions over its 12 mesmerising tracks. The album deftly explores the interplay of three central existential dilemmas against a broader backdrop of wonder at the vastness and power of the ocean, concluding its arc with the stunning opus ‘Where Sky Becomes Sea’. Through diving into themes of the subconscious, dreams and existentialism, ‘Shoals’ is broadly a record about living with and processing fear. As frontman Leo Wyndham explains:

The record symbolises how our minds can have beautiful yet dangerous depths, like the ocean, and how our fears and thoughts are like shoals of fish that move and shift constantly from place to place; chaotic, often untameable and unpredictable.”

Check out the album{s tracklist and watch the video for their new single "Lover (Don't Let Me Down)", below.

Shoals Tracklist:
01. Never Said It Was Easy
02. Shame On You

NewDad Announce Debut EP 'Waves', Stream "Slowly"

Irish alt rock/slo-fi band NewDad have announced the release of their debut EP 'Waves'. aired the video for their catchy new single "I Don't Recognise You".

The 6-track EP, was recorded with Chris Ryan, and will be out on March 26 via Fair Youth Records, featuring their new single “Slowly.”

Speaking about it, the band said: “It’s a song about a person admitting their feelings for you with no follow through, and the feelings of uncertainty that surround that. It’s one of our more energetic songs, and the whole song moves quite frantically around the drums to convey the feeling of confusion when you go through this. For a song called slowly we sure do play it fast and it hurts Áindle’s hands to play. It was definitely one of our roughest demos but Chris really helped to turn it into one of our favourite songs on the EP.”

The song is out today, November 27. Grab it here.

Speaking about it, the band said: “The song is about watching someone you love lose their way. Sometimes, you can’t recognise them as the same person they were before.”

“We recorded the song in September in Belfast with Chris Ryan, who had mixed our last four songs, so it was amazing to work so hands on with him. It was our first time in a studio together, because we had recorded everything ourselves before. Watch: Pixies Share New Single/Video "Hear Me Out"

Boston alt rockers Pixies have shared the video for their new single "Hear Me Out".

The double A-side single Hear Me Out / Mambo Sun will be out on October 16th. Get your copy here.

The song was written by frontman Black Francis and Lenchantin at Dreamland Studios during sessions for ‘Beneath The Eyrie’, with production courtesy of the Grammy-nominated Tom Dalgety (Royal Blood, Ghost, etc.).

“‘Hear Me Out’ is about things not turning out the way we hoped, but knowing that it’s going to be ok regardless,”says Lenchantin. “Black started the melody phrases on an old organ. I loved it right away, so he asked me to take a pass at the lyrics. The song has an evocative melody that inspired the lyrics to come out straight away.”

Joey Santiago added, “Paz sounds like she’s talking to a guy with deaf ears. I did a western style riff at the end of verses, which was like giving her a gun so the dude would pay attention.”
