Stellastarr* Shawn Christensen Wins Oscar For 'Curfew'

Shawn Christensen, the former frontman of New York indie rock band Stellastarr* won an Oscar for his short film 'Curfew'.

With Stellastarr*, Christensen released three albums between 2003-2009 and are currently on an indefinite hiatus. Now, the director/writer has focused on his film career, in 2011 he wrote the  movie Abduction starring Taylor Lautner and last Sunday he ended up winning the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for his 2012 movie Curfew.

Curfew tells the story of a depressed man who is asked to take care of his young niece, and sees Christensen play the lead role as well as writing and directing the movie.

In a recent interview, when asked about if the band is still active, Christensen said: "We never officially broke it off, but we don’t rehearse or make music, at least right now… When I signed a record deal [in 2003], I was an aspiring actor, and I was just booking commercials and I was represented by a couple agencies, and that was what I was going to do. When Stellastarr* happened it was kind of the thing where life happens when you’re making plans, so I was in a band for a while, and when I was on tour with the Killers – they were opening for us, no one knew who they were yet – I could see that they were a great band and that they were going to be huge … and I could see that we weren't. So, I started dabbling back into film again and writing screenplays and a couple of them sold. That's kind of how I got into filmmaking. Now I’m not so much into filmmaking; I’m into directing."

Nine Inch Nails Return With New Line-Up, Announce Tour

Trent Reznor has confirmed that his world-famous outfit Nine Inch Nails will be making a comeback this year, with a brand new line-up.

The news was broken by a statement Reznor made yesterday, in which he said: “Nine Inch Nails are touring this year. I was working with Adrian Belew on some musical ideas, which led to some discussion on performing, which led to some beard-scratching, which (many steps later) led to the decision to rethink the idea of what Nine Inch Nails could be, and the idea of playing a show.

“Calls were made to some friends, lots of new ideas were discussed, and a show was booked - which led to another, which somehow led to a lot of shows. The band is reinventing itself from scratch and will be comprised of Eric Avery, Adrian Belew, Alessandro Cortini, Josh Eustis, Ilan Rubin, and me. The first shows will begin this summer, followed by a full-on arena tour of the US this fall, and lots of other dates worldwide to follow through 2014. Lots of details and dates to come. See you soon.”

Details and dates are expected to be announced shortly. We'll keep you updated!

Meanwhile Trent Reznor's new project, How To Destroy Angels, will release their debut album 'Welcome Oblivion' on March 4th.

Album of the Week 25/02: Theme Park

London Three-piece Theme Park have released their self-titled debut album today via Transgressive Records.

Produced by Luke Smith (Foals, The Maccabees), the  album follows a series of singles released throughout 2012 such as 'Jamaica', 'Two Hours' and most recently 'Tonight', which kept us wanting more of their summery melodic electronic pop music.

“I want it to be appreciated as a pop album, rather than the debut of a left field East London band” says singer/guitarist Miles.

“Some albums you listen to and every song is nicely formed. That’s what we’re aiming for. It should all feel effortless and un-self conscious.” The aim of ‘Theme Park’, says singer Marcus, is to capture a moment in time – that rich period of life between school and the early 20s. It’s hopefully an optimistic album, and I’d like to think slightly romantic. I don’t mean that in the love sense, but in the slightly idealistic way. It’s easy to be cynical – I like to give the world a chance.” And boy he couldn't describe it better...

While listening, we can only think on a beach day, and it will definitely put you in the mood for fun time. In general, this album is a great debut with a lot of personality, so fresh and fun to listen, with  sounds that it will stick in your head.

We highly recommend this album, so get your copy HERE right now!

**Theme Park reached the TOP 20 on Kool Rock Radio's Best New Bands of 2011 list. Their single 'Milk' peaked at #22 on our Best Tracks of 2011 chart and 'Two Hours' peaked at #51 on our Best Tracks of 2012.

Neils Children Announce New Album 'Dimly Lit' + Unveil New Video For "Trust You"

Neils Children, one of our favourite noughties actshave announced they will release their long-awaited new album 'Dimly Lit' on March 21 through Boudoir Moderne Records.

The band with a new lineup, John Linger (Guitar/Keys/Vocals), David Smith (Keys), Brandon Jacobs (Drums), and Syd Kemp (Bass) were back in the studio in December 2012 to produce their first full length album since 2009's 'X.Enc', and they promised it will be their most exciting, original and powerful work to date.

According to a press release the new album delves deeper into the personal music tastes of the group, pulling together a sound that owes much to their love of psychedelic music past and present, whilst retaining the urgency of their previous work. Throughout the album there are aural fragments of the sophisticated French pop melodies of Gainsbourg's late 1960s/early 1970s output, alongside the experimentation of groups such as Broadcast, Stereolab and Silver Apples. It marks a milestone of maturity in the bands songwriting and development.

Morrissey To Re-issue "The Last of the Famous International Playboys" And 1991 Album 'Kill Uncle'

Morrissey has announced the release of a limited edition 7-inch picture disc of his classic single "The Last of the Famous International Playboys" and a remastered version of his second album 'Kill Uncle' on April 8 via Parlophone Records.

Originally released in 1989, 'The Last of the Famous International Playboys' was Morrissey's third single and charted at #6 in the UK. The song tackles the media glamorisation of, and public hypocrisy regarding, crime - in particular, the sensationalism of how mass-murderers are always automatically awarded the media fame they crave.

It will be available on 7" picture disc single, CD single and digital download from April 8th. All three formats are backed with new songs: 'People are the Same everywhere (BBC live version)', 'Action is my Middle Name (BBC live version)' and 'The Kid’s a Looker (BBC live version)', recorded on Radio 2 in June 2011.

Also a remastered version of ‘Kill Uncle’ will be released that day, featuring a new tracklisting and cover art, with the addition of the songs ‘Pashernate Love’ and ‘East West’ (a Herman’s Hermits cover), as well the ‘live in studio’ version of ‘There’s a Place In Hell For Me and My Friends’.

The new 'Kill Uncle' tracklisting is as follows:

01. Our Frank
02. Sing Your Life
03. Mute Witness
04. King Leer
05. Asian Rut
06. Pashernate Love
07. East West
08. Found Found Found

THEME PARK - Band on the Month February 2013

Theme Park are a three piece band from North London, comprised by twins Miles and Marcus Haughton and Oscar Manthorpe. Marcus and Miles were born to make music, they're named after two jazz greats: Marcus Miller and Miles Davis. Ironically, Miles plays the bass, and Marcus is the trumpet player. Their parents went to art school with Oscar's parents, later, the three future Theme Park members attended the same primary school.

Theme Park began in earnest as a studio project when the brothers returned from university. Oscar was still a student in Leeds during the recording of the album, and became used to writing essays after gigs in Travelodges around the country. The band released their debut single 'Wax'/'A Mountain We Love', on Transgressive offshoot ParadYse in August 2011. The following day, they performed their first ever live show at London’s Lexington. Despite a late start to live performance the band have been making up for lost time, touring the UK with Two Door Cinema Club, Bloc Party and Bombay Bicycle Club, as well as opening for Florence + The Machine at Alexandra Palace.

Many songwriters talk about the need to be sad or angry or heartbroken in order to access their muse. Miles Haughton, singer/guitarist for the band, is quite the opposite. "I find it interesting that people can write when they’re sad," he says. "I write when I’m in a wave of happiness and euphoria because I want to share the feeling. I’m looking for the moment where you find something that’s so great you want to loop it around, get up and dance to it. You’re happy because you’re dancing and you’re happy because you wrote it – it’s a double hit of happiness."

Haughton's attitude shines through in Theme Park’s rhythmic, euphoric, groove-oriented, dreamlike and melodic electronic pop. It’s guitar-and-synth music informed by dance, and vice versa.

Theme Park will release their eponymous debut album via Transgressive Records on February 25th. Produced by Luke Smith (Foals, The Maccabees), this follows a series of single releases and extensive touring throughout 2012, which gained the London 3 piece a wealth of fans and supporters in the lead up to the full album.

**Theme Park reached the TOP 20 on Kool Rock Radio's Best New Bands of 2011 list. Their single 'Milk' peaked at #22 on our Best Tracks of 2011 chart and 'Two Hours' peaked at #51 on our Best Tracks of 2012.

Primal Scream Reveal Details Of New Album 'More Light'

Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie has announced the band will release their new album 'More Light' on May 6th.

The follow-up to 2008's 'Beautiful Future', has been produced by David Holmes. Mark Stewart of The Pop Group and Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant will also appear.

In a interview last year, Gillespie said: "It’s a rock’n’roll record, but modern rock’n’roll. Pretty psychedelic rock, it’s kind of guitar-driven but we use guitars in an orchestral way, not in the normal way people make rock records,” he has told Q last year.

"I think we do it in a more interesting way. We weave the guitars in with electronics and other acoustic instruments to make the core sound." He added.

Led Zeppelin legend Robert Plant recently told he has contributed vocals to the LP after praising the band for 'their references on looking back on the glorious past’ and 'bringing them into the contemporary world'.
