Crystal Eyes Announce New LP 'The Sweetness Restored', Stream "Wishes"

Alberta-based psych-rock/dream-pop band Crystal Eyes have announced the release of their second full-length album 'The Sweetness Restored'.

Recorded at Montreal's Breakglass Studios with producer/engineer, Andrew Woods (The Operators, Legal Vertigo, Basia Bulat), the album will be out on April 22 through Bobo Integral (Motorists, Ducks Ltd, Quivers). Pre-order your copy here.

Described by the band as a 'feel-good self-help record for the age of existential dread,' The Sweetness Restored is a collection of 10 tracks that flirt with musical influences ranging from new wave, 60's psych-rock and 90's shoegaze, with songs driven by melody and steeped in texture.

The Sweetness Restored contains thoughtful attention to musical detail thanks to the talented team of artists behind the project. And with the beautiful, warm tones of the Neve console, it's at once a unique sound, but one that feels comfortingly familiar. The prolific Scott' Monty' Munroe (Preoccupations, Chad VanGaalen) contributed bass and the talented Eve Parker Finley composed and performed string arrangements.
On the first single, "Wishes", the band serves up a conflicting happy/sad mood designed to be something that you can dance to, complete with a trippy rock 'n' roll fairy tale music video that's somewhere between Alice in Wonderland and Wizard of Oz. Taking inspiration from the sounds of New Order and The Cure, the track makes use of the ghostly therevox, a touch-controlled theremin proudly made in Windsor, Ontario. Speaking about the single, Jenkins says: "'Wishes' is a song about the spiritual act of wishing as a form of the creative process, and the ultimately delicate and complicated relationship between dream and reality. It’s also a song about faith and redemption. Although we will experience loss and pain, we always have the promise of a new wish."

When discussing the accompanying video, Jenkins continues: "The video was filmed on location at the ‘Castle House’, a Calgary mansion noted for its distinct castle-inspired design. Recently purchased by developers who intended it as a tear-down for the valuable land, they decided to turn it over to the care of artists as an incredible philanthropic gesture, for a guaranteed two-year period. The ‘Castle House’ has since become a living art installation, studio, venue and home for artists, thriving with creative, spiritual vibes."

Check out the album's tracklist and watch the video for their new single "Wishes", below.

New Entry: BODEGA Release New Single "THROWN"

New York art-rock/punk band BODEGA have released their new single "THROWN".

The song is taken from their forthcoming second full-length album 'Broken Equipment', which will be out on March 11 2022 via WYR? Pre-order your copy here.

The band's Ben Hozie explains: "‘Thrown’ was an attempt at a self-portrait track. The older I get the less I trust my own thoughts and perceptions of self  ——> I realise most of my values and judgments come from the records, films, books, and advertisements I have consumed my whole life. Recognising this ‘thrown-ness,’ while slightly disturbing, has been a source of inspiration for my creative mind. If the mind can only output what has been presented —> provide it with the proper input. You can remake yourself entirely at the drop of a (top)hat. The inputs I selected for this lyric: James Joyce and Bob Dylan. The music, to me, is a synthesis of many of the stylistic motifs our group has developed over the past few years: syncopated bass over a slow-shifting sea of guitar harmonics, violent guitar spams with machine influenced but human-played drums; plus male/female vox alternating between spoken text raps and melody."

New Entry: Eades Reveal New Single "Delusion Spree"

Leeds garage rock/new wave//post-punk band Eades have revealed their new single "Delusion Spree".

The song is taken from  their highly-anticipated debut album 'Delusion Spree', set to be released on March 4th 2022 on Heist or Hit. Pre-order your copy here.

From the band: “’Delusion Spree’ was a very special song for the band when writing the album, finishing the song felt like a turning point when we finally knew how we wanted the album to sound, and the direction we were headed in lyrically and sonically. It kind of opened the floodgates for the rest of the tunes!"

“Thematically it summed up the disillusionment and confusion we all felt in our early twenties, trying to build a life for ourselves whilst the world around us seemed to be falling apart. Two years on I think we all feel quite differently towards the world and we’ve learnt to be a lot more positive as our hard work over the last couple years has started to pay off. Although at the time I think it’s safe to say we were all feeling pretty lost.”

An indie pop booster, ‘Information Overload’ is about there being so much stuff going on in the world that it can be too much to even process thoughts at times.

The visuals dip in between an efficiency clip and news products from the past, matching the previous/ present vibes of the lyrics themselves.

Frontaman Matty Took says: ” We desired the video for ‘Information Overload’ to be as extreme and erratic as humanly possible so the concept was to make 3 different clips and include impacted news clipping and advertisements. The end product was shooting these clips predicted on old TV/broadcast screens – rather clearly representing the title of the tune, however discreetly highlighting how when there is a lot going on you can’t believe at all or do anything with clearness.”

VR SEX Announce New LP 'Rough Dimension', Stream "Victim or Vixen"

Los Angeles synth punk/death rock/post punk outfit VR SEX (lead by Andrew Clinco) have announced the release of their sophomore album 'Rough Dimension'.

Set to be released on March 25 via Dais Records, the album takes its title from an architectural phrase but more importantly refers to the warped, wicked underworld the songs both chronicle and condemn. Pre-order your copy here.

Donning the moniker Noel Skum – an acerbic anagram of Elon Musk – Clinco vents his scorn for and fascination with the seedy, surreal margins of low-life Los Angeles, doomed to dead ends of vanity, lust, and technology. Although initially launched as an outlet for “heavier sounds” beyond Clinco’s duties in new wave fantasists Drab Majesty, the project has ripened into a compelling exercise in world building, weaving themes of gritty city neo-futurist sleaze within a framework of driving, distorted guitars and cathode-blasted synths. Echoes of Chrome, Wire, Minimal Man, and Sisters Of Mercy ripple through the collection but ultimately "Rough Dimension" charts its own twisted vision of “our unforgiving reality.”

Written and demoed across two weeks alone in a Marseille flat using his prized 1980’s Gibson “Invader” and a laptop, Clinco then took the tracks to Strange Weather studios in Brooklyn to record with Ben Greenberg (Uniform, The Men) who helmed 2019’s debut, Human Traffic Jam. The results are notably ripping, refined, and riveting. Riffs in alternate tunings chug and churn over mid-tempo drums punctuated by spikes of sci-fi electronics while the vocals swagger and spit venom (“where we walk is also where we shit / but if we bark at our reflections are we hypocrites? / impulses bleed right into our seed / where hate culminates the apple rotted on the tree”). It’s a bristling mix of the melodic and the macabre, absurdist observations of fast living and desperate measures, the clock of youth ticking towards midnight as dreams unravel in Babylon.

VR SEX’s specialty is making these cautionary tales of psychic decay and tainted love a thrill rather than a drag. There’s a sunglasses at night glamor to Clinco’s choruses and solos, a wit to his black leather judgements (“what is the answer / to cancerous people / walking in my line of sight?”). The music’s milieu tends towards parasites and predators but its mood skews refreshingly accelerated and amused, cruising the strip with a cigarette, watching goths and limousines crawl in gridlock beneath digital billboards. The Rough Dimension may be a cesspool, but it’s home.

Check out the album's tracklist and the video for lead single "Victim or Vixen", below.

Rough Dimension Tracklist:
01. Victim or Vixen
02. Glutton for Love
03. Cyber Crimes
04. Live (In a Dream)
05. Walk of Fame
06. Crisis Stage
07. Taste of Hate
08. Snake Water
09. End Vision

Watch: Black Doldrums Share New Single/Video "Into Blue"

North London-based post punk/darkwave/psych band Black Doldrums have shared the video for their new single "Into Blue".

The song is taken from their forthcoming debut album 'Dead Awake', set to be released on March 11th 2022 through Fuzz Club Records. Pre-order your copy here.

‘Into Blue’ is a euphoric and slow-burning cut written for all of the wall-of-sound-loving romantics out there. Acting as a follow-up to an unreleased song he wrote when he was younger, Kevin says of ‘Into Blue’: “It’s an honest retrospective look at a certain period of time for me that’s brought right into the now with lyrics such as ‘And all the while as if to make me smile she was there'. That line refers to a twist of fate as it’s about a chance meeting between myself and Sophie after living and growing up right down the road from each other the whole time. The imagery of ‘Into Blue’ I think means to follow someone and be with someone into an afterlife or eternity.”

New Entry: Lime Garden Release New Single "Marbles"

Brighton indie rock/pop/psych band Lime Garden have released their new single "Marbles".

The song is out today (January 18) through So Young Records, it follows previous single ‘Clockwork’ and finds the band turning up the distorted-disco dial to the max, and in the process creating a bouncing (disco) ball of infectious nervous energy. Get it here.

Singer Chloe Howard explains: “‘Marbles’ is about the realisation that you're not sharing the same lifestyle as those around you. It's about overthinking that comparison to the point where you question your own sanity or direction in life. It tells the story of an individual on a journey of self-discovery that the listener is witnessing from afar but with access to their internal monologue.”

Watch: A Place To Bury Strangers Air New Single/Video "I'm Hurt"

Brooklyn NY, post punk/psych band A Place To Bury Strangers have aired the video for their new single "I'm Hurt".

The song is taken from their forthcoming sixth studio album 'See Through You', which will be out February 4, 2022 on the band’s newly former label, Dedstrange. Pre-order your copy here.

The band dive headfirst into suffering on the dark and explosive “I’m Hurt.” Its accompanying video is the first in a series of notable horror movie directors the band reached out to collaborate on videos for See Through You.  First up is Chad Crawford Kinkle who directed last year’s critically acclaimed “Dementer” and the folk horror classic “Jug Face”..

Under Kinkle’s frantic and hallucinatory direction, Oliver Ackermann’s expression of relentless liminal terror is transubstantiated into a brutal backwater blood feast. While the flickering, kinetic visuals will be familiar to anyone who has seen the band live, the psychological horror at the heart of “I’m Hurt” is raw.
Together, Chad Crawford Kinkle and APTBS scramble our collective unconsciousness with scenes of grotesque public freakouts from the outskirts of the subliminal that are tied to a scorned woman’s black magic ritual which conjures up teenage demons on the hunt for revenge.

Priestgate Premiere New Single/Video "Eyes Closed For The Winter"

East Yorkshire dream-punk quintet Priestgate have premiered their new single "Eyes Closed For The Winter".

Produced by Nick Hodgson (Alfie Templeman) and mixed by Caesar Edmunds (Foals, The Killers, PJ Harvey) the EP is a formidable statement straight out the gates - and a window into the world of one of Britain’s most thrilling young bands. It will be out on March 25th via Lucky Number & Mirror Music Group. Pre-order it here.

Formed as a battle-cry against the restlessness and mundanity of rural life, Priestgate began as a reaction to the sparse local music scene around them, which in turn has allowed them to craft and develop their own unique sound without the added pressure of conformity.

Drawing comparisons to The Cure and The Maccabees, Priestgate have combined bright guitar-pop hooks with darker lyrical sensibilities, concocting their own angst-laden blend of the hypnotic and euphoric.

Sunglaciers Announce New LP 'Subterranea', Stream "Avoidance"

Calgary psych pop/post punk outfit Sunglaciers have announced the release of their sophomore album 'Subterranea'

Co-produced by Chad VanGaalen and mixed by Mark Lawson (Arcade Fire, Yves Jarvis, The Unicorns), the record will be available on March 25 through Mothland. Pre-order your copy here.

Like their name might suggest, Sunglaciers’ music blurs the boundaries between dazzling indie-rock melodicism and icy post-punk experimentation.

Subterranea comes in the form of a 13 song post-punk meets alternative-pop long-player that is sonically dense, yet easy on the eardrums.

Though Subterranea is anchored in strange realities from our times, this new effort from Resnik and Blanchard (the pair behind Sunglaciers) is also laced with a certain optimism, perhaps the work of well-calculated psychedelic elements and headbanging rhythms, making for a most-rewarding listening experience.

The band have also shared the video for their new single "Avoidance", an epic post-punk scorcher fueled by a restless drumbeat and an alarming synth hook, atop inhuman screams from Louis Cza (Roman66, The Black Greek God).

Check out the album's tracklist and the video for "Avoidance" below.

Crows Announce New LP 'Beware Believers', Stream "Slowly Separate"

London post-punk/psych band Crows have announced the release of their their highly-anticipated second album 'Beware Believers'.

The follow-up to their 2019 debut 'Silver Tongues', will be out on April 1st via Bad Vibrations Records. Pre-order your copy here.

Following the release of Silver Tongues on the IDLES-run Balley Records in 2019, Crows immediately set to work on its follow-up and by January 2020 they were already back in the studio tracking what would become the ‘Beware Believers’ LP – and then Covid hit. “Once we knew Covid was here to stay, we took the first break we’ve taken since we released our first single ‘Pray’ in 2015. Being locked down for three months unable to finish the last bits of the record was very frustrating but it did mean we could come back to the album with fresh ears and make sure it sounded like it should: a true representation of Crows.” frontman James Cox said.

About the new single "Slowly Separate", he says: "'Slowly Separate' is about living in London, working a job you hate and just going through the mundane routine of hand to mouth living."

"Don't get me wrong, I love London. It’s been my home for 13 years, and this song translates to any city and anytime you're working a job that doesn't fulfil you. When it gets to the end of the month, all your rent and bills come out and you're barely left with enough to get through the next month. It gets to you, I’m sure a lot of people can relate. It just makes it sweeter when you are finally making changes in your life for the better and you can leave those feelings in the past."

Loud, cathartic and abrasive – a quintessential Crows record it certainly is. “Beware Believers has felt like a marathon, a real endurance test that’s been a long, winding road filled with highs and lows and plenty of twists and turns. The majority of the themes on the album came from what was going on in the world around Summer 2019 when we started writing the album. Covid wasn't in our lives and the biggest impact was Brexit and the madness our government were putting us through. I was reading a lot of J.G. Ballard and Kurt Vonnegut, mad dystopian novels, whilst all this craziness was going on around us and it was a weird headspace to get into.” he added.
