Watch: Thyla Reveal New Single/Video "Breathe"

Brighton guitar pop/alt/psych band Thyla have revealed the video for their new single "Breathe".

The song is taken from their self-titled debut album which will be out later this year. Get it here.

Speaking about it, frontwoman Millie Duthie explained: "“Breathe” was written in the early hours of the morning. Eventually we chanced upon this really vibey atmospheric lick that you hear in the intro, and the whole song grew from there. The song blossomed into a slightly melancholic dream-pop bop, it’s bittersweet and has a slightly inconclusive feeling to it; imagine a film where the main character never actually gets the happy ending you’ve been so long yearning for. The result of how the instrumental sounded no doubt manifested lyrics that held the same sentiment. The song is about loneliness, estrangement from family and close friends, yet despite this, feeling a sense of inner strength about the situation. It’s like recovering from a breakup and realising you’ve come out stronger, but a reflection of the scar tissue that resulted from the trauma.."

New Entry: Jane Inc Share New Single "Steel"

Toronto-based experimental-pop artist, Jane Inc. (aka Carlyn Bezic who's part of U.S. Girls, Ice Cream and Darlene Shrugg) has shared her new single "Steel".

The song is taken from her forthcoming debut album 'Number One', which will be out on March 19 out via Telephone Explosion Records. Pre-order your copy here.

In a lot of ways, this album is a constant self-assessment. How do our surroundings impact our depression? Does outside imagery warp our ideas of beauty and self-worth? How do we manage our unhealthy connections to social media? What can we do to better our planet? This internal dialogue often leads Number One into vulnerable territory. “I think a lot of the songs on the album deal with how we form ourselves and how that gets fragmented and complicated by the societal structures we interact with”, says Bezic. “It felt right to make a collage of pictures of me (and ads from magazines) for the cover of the album. It’s like a weird fragmented self, building up an idea of who you are based on other people's ideas of you”.

"Steel", is a snappy foray into bug-eyed guitar pop, wedging agile riffs alongside blinging synthesizers and a thumping rhythm section. Thematically it adds to the conversation surrounding the increasingly imbalanced work/life pattern that we persevere with and the gentrification that is slowly sucking the soul out of cities whilst we keep our noses to the grindstone. "'Steel' is about the frustration of living to work and working to live," explains Carlyn, "while condominiums (and the policy and bureaucracy that nurture them) slowly turn your hometown into a husk."

Stream it below.

Number One Tracklist:
01. Gem
02. Steel
03. Faceless, Bodiless
04. Dirt and The Earth
05. Bloom Becomes Me
06. My Oldest Friend
07. His, Mine
08. Obliterated

Watch: Gary, Indiana Release New Single/Video "Alien 3"

Manchester experimental/noise three piece Gary, Indiana have released the video for their new single "Alien 3".

The song is out today via Fire Talk, get it here. Speaking about the new track, the band said "'Alien 3' is a dark tale of violence, defiance and rebellion. The words, almost whispered and monotone, are a declaration of power: I know what you're doing, the victim says; but I won't be on my knees anymore."

On the visuals, Scott Fair of the band, who also created the video said "I saw a clip of the video game Mosh Pit Simulator a while back and found it to be both very disturbing and very funny, and I loved that reaction so that was a jumping off point for the 'Alien 3' video. I used free software called Blender to make most of the animations, it's all completely new to me so I was like a kid in a sweet shop wanting to try everything and having fun with it. The other major component of the video is computer game glitches. Some true abominations are created when computer games go wrong and it's utterly captivating."

New Entry: The Vacant Lots Drop "Into The Depths" (Cold Cave Deep Speed Remix)

NYC  electro post-punk duo The Vacant Lots (aka Jared Artaud and Brian MacFadyen) have dropped the Cold Cave Deep Speed Remix of their song "Into The Depths".

The remix features as a bonus 7" included in the second pressing of their latest album 'Interzone', due for release February 19th via Fuzz Club. Pre-order your copy here.

"It's truly an honor to collaborate with Wesley Eisold," says the duo's Jared Artaud. "Not only is Cold Cave one of my favorite bands, but he's one of my favorite poets. I can count on one hand the contemporary bands whose music I find inspiring. Cold Cave is the ultimate. It’s music that cuts through the bullshit and strikes the soul. Brian and I wanted to have just one remix to go with Interzone, and there was no one else we wanted to work with more than Cold Cave. I love what Wesley did to the track - pushing it to the extremes, into some insanely ordered chaos zone."

Saccades Announces New LP 'Flowing Fades', Stream "Islands Past"

Berlin-based psych pop/post punk musician Nicholas Wood aka Saccades (best known for making up one-half of The KVB) has announce the release of his sophomore album 'Flowing Fades'.

The record will be released on April 9th via Fuzz Club Records featuring his new single "Islands Past". Pre-order your copy here.

The artist’s solo material under the Saccades moniker is an exercise in escapist psychedelic pop. On ‘Flowing Fades’ we find a world of blissed-out synths, languid carefree guitars, dreamy vocals and influences that range from J.G. Ballard and Serge Gainsbourg to 80s dream pop and yacht-rock.

“I began to properly work on this album after returning from The KVB’s North American Tour in late 2019, my head filled with new inspiration for this project and a clear idea on how this album should sound”, Wood remembers: “I wanted to create something soothing and immersive. Music for escapism, which can be listened to at sunrise or sunset. Even though it’s lighter and mellower than my usual output, I feel like there are strong hints of melancholia in there too, reflecting the world in which it was created.” With the bulk of the album written whilst Wood was cooped up in his apartment over lockdown, the album inevitably reflects the social unrest that was unfolding outside - touching on everything from lockdown paranoia and fractured relationships to missing life on the road.

New Entry: Astari Nite Unveil New Single "All Else is a Curse"

Miami post punk/dark wave band Astari Nite have unveiled their new single "All Else is a Curse".

The song is out today (Jan 26), and is the latest offering from the band’s forthcoming new album, due to be released later this year. Get it here

Band's frontman, Mychael says: "As of recent I have been listening to quite a bit of Abba, David Bowie and Yazoo, not intentionally of course, perhaps it had to do with the familiar faces I have been surrounded by during this past Fall and now what seems to be, the never-ending Winter. In essence I fell in love with a lot of laughter and simple conversing during these engagements.

Often, I would slide away in thought during these times only to be reminded of voices I might never hear again. Feeling merry and magical, Astari Nite began tracking for our next catalog of songs and in an instant “All Else is a Curse” became my new obsession.

As melancholy as I may appear, I am carelessly smiling deep inside. The more I dwell on who or what moment in time this song is about, I like to believe that sadness is an artform and as cliché as it may sound, it meant everything to me.

Watch: SWIMM Air Music Video For "You Never Fake It"

L.A psych pop/rock band SWIMM have revealed their new single "You Never Fake It" featuring Lauren Ruth Ward.

The song, "an intimate ballad complete with lush synthesizers and an entrancing drum+bass," is out now. Buy it here.

Detailing the backstory of the song, SWIMM said: The story of “You Never Fake It” was actually birthed out of one rainy night in Manhattan I had a few years ago but when I hear this song it brings me back to the first couple weeks of quarantine. It was actually very stormy during that time so the air outside was ripe with panic and urban drainage, while inside my warehouse… mostly panic, ganja and sweatpants. Turns out productivity can really blossom when you’re not sneaking into the ballroom bathrooms of East LA snorting Cayenne pepper with strangers for a head rush. This new allotment of focus time let me dive into the production of this one…

This is gonna sound a little Indigo-child dream-catcher vibe but I kept hearing “Kim”, the somewhat illusory character of the song, in my head when I was recording and wanted to somehow capture the spirit of her and have it feel analogous to the way you can kind of capture a memory in a song. So I texted my best bud and bandmate of our side project Aging Actress, Lauren Ruth Ward and asked her to sing some words into her phone and text them back. I didn’t give her the tempo or key, which was really silly of me now that I think about it but somehow what she did just worked perfectly. I guess it helps that she is the best singer on the damn planet.  Eventually I asked her to sing on the bridge and kinda go for it for the end of the song.

In an odd sense, I have some weird nostalgia for those first few weeks. And I don’t mean that in any disrespect to those that were sick or hurting. It’s just that I really escaped to and lived in that song for that time and through the beauty of art or whatever, that place became more real to me than the terrifying state of things."

Flyying Colours Confirm Details of New Album 'Fantasy Country'

Melbourne psych/shoegaze band Flyying Colours have confirmed details of their upcoming sophomore album 'Fantasy Country',

The follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2016's debut album Mindfullness, will be out on February 26th via London-based independent label, Club AC30. Taking inspiration from the early 90s UK psych/shoegaze scene, ‘Fantasy Country’ is rich in sonic texture and shimmering atmospherics with a heavy dose of melody. Pre-order your copy here.

“While it’s been a long time seemingly between records it doesn’t feel like that so much for us. We have previously been able to throw ourselves into recording over a period of time, however with this record was about creating that time in between touring and life. We are real people who work to pay our rent and to be able to go on tour,” says band member Brodie J Brümmer.

“This album was supposed to now be 6-12 months old. We take touring and supporting our music live pretty seriously so it would have been very difficult for us to put out this album during the early stages of the pandemic. We are very lucky to be in Australia right now where shows are starting up again, and we of course hope to be touring internationally again soon,” he adds.

Glasgow indie rock/punk band Baby Strange have dropped their new single "Club Sabbath".

The song is out today (Jan 21) and is taken from their forthcoming new EP ‘Land of Nothing’, which will be out on April 30 via Icons Creating Evil Art. Get it here.

Speaking about it, vocalist/guitarist Johnny Madden says: “When we wrote this track we instantly knew we wanted to name it after our club night. It sounds like it was made for a dancefloor. This is one of our favourite songs to date and we can’t wait for people to hear it.

"We’re missing Club Sabbath more than ever right now. We started it in 2015 at The Priory on Sauchiehall St in Glasgow and we’ve hosted some really memorable parties. It’s a community spirit with loads of like-minded people. We’ve had live performances or DJ sets from people like Fontaines D.C, Wolf Alice, DMA’s, The Chats, The Magic Gang, Nick Allbrook (Pond) and The Dunts, to name a few. The government needs to support independent venues during Covid or there will be nowhere left for new artists to cut their teeth and grow. It’s really important that small venues like The Priory survive through this for that very reason.”

Low Island Announce Debut LP 'If You Could Have It All Again', Stream "Feel Young Again"

Oxford indie dance quartet Low Island have announced the release of their highly anticipated debut album ‘If You Could Have It All Again’.

Recorded, produced and engineered by the band at their makeshift studio in rural France, the album sees the band fully taking the reins over their own destiny, and becoming a DIY machine. It will be released on their own label Emotional Interference on April 16th. Pre-order it here.

Describing the album as the product of "ten years of trying to make things work – in music, but also in life," lead vocalist Carlos Posada recounts "a litany of romantic disasters that have coloured the last ten years of my life". It sees him inhabiting a loose character that looks back at the last decade, and says – in his words – "Have I just really fucked this up? Have I made a royal mess of the last ten years?

This reference to a character teases at the literary and pop-culture touchstones for the record. Wistful protagonists caught in a constant nostalgia, perpetually feeling their best days are behind them - think Watanabe in Norwegian Wood, Malcolm from A Little Life, Emma from People, Places, Things, Holden from Catcher In The Rye.

Whilst the sorrow of a lost twenties is evident in a lot of the album there’s hope among the chaos and the loss too. Playing with light and shade sonically, visually and thematically, Low Island succinctly express how one can’t exist without the other, and learn to embrace the contrast.

Check out the record's tracklist and take a listen to their new single "Feel Young Again", below

"The idea for the video came to me one evening in lock down. I’ve been heavily into sci-fi and the whole extra terrestrial thing since I was a kid reading books about the unexplained. It’s about someone who feels alienated in life and that idea is taken to the extreme where they’re actually feeling alienated because they don’t belong on this planet!" — Dave
