Underworld & The Necks Reveal "Appleshine Continuum" (#Drift, Ep 2, Pt. 6)

Electronic icons Underworld and Australian experimental trio The Necks have revealed a 47-minute film for "Appleshine Continuum", Part 6 of Episode 2, of their #DRIFT series.

Drift is an ongoing experiment that will regularly publish new Underworld material – music, film, stories, etc – via the band’s official website.

This Thursday’s DRIFT release, Episode 2 concludes with Appleshine Continuum – one of a series of collaborations between Underworld and The Necks. Recorded in a single take during two days of improvising at AIR Studios, Appleshine Continuum takes Underworld’s original version of Appleshine (Ep.2 Pt.1) as its starting point and quickly takes flight, only returning to Earth’s atmosphere after 47 mesmerising minutes….

“Sometimes they terrify me on stage... I get this thrill like they’re destroying their instruments right in front of me. Their personalities off-stage couldn’t be more different. They’re remarkably open and welcoming and generous, and they still seem to be full of wonder when you talk to them. They all have an ease and.. an ability to just enter into what’s going on, and not be judgmental.” – Karl

Pixx Announces New LP ‘Small Mercies’, Streams "Disgrace"

UK indie pop artist Pixx (aka 23 year-old Hannah Rodgers) has announced the release of her new album ‘Small Mercies’.

The follow up to 2017's debut album The Age Of Anxiety, will be out on 7th June via 4AD. It was co-produced by Simon Byrt (who worked on both her EP and debut album) and Dan Carey, and sees Pixx assuming different personas to examine the damage done by religion, gender-based power hierarchies and stereotypes, the tipping point of Earth’s destruction and love. Pre-order you copy here.

“I felt more of a drive to write about certain subjects with this album,” Pixx says.  “Man negotiating with God, God negotiating with man and man negotiating with the planet.  I find it hard to have an understanding of relationships in general – I think everyone does – and the addictive tendency that we have to look for something that’s eternal is something that intrigues me.  So, if you love God maybe what draws you to that is the idea of something that’s never going to end and that really intense love often takes place in human relationships, too.”

Pixx has also shared the record;s lead single "Disgrace". "This song is about growing up in an ultra-conservative Catholic school which was restrictive and oppressive," Rodgers explains. "I think this is a lack of humanity in the way the system works, rather than teaching empathy and kindness it forces people into a dangerous self-loathing cycle. This is an ode to anyone trapped in a place they feel they don't belong."

Reptaliens Announce New LP 'Valis', Drop "Shuggie II" Music Video

Portland lo-fi/indie pop band Reptaliens have announced the release of their sophomore album titled 'Valis'.

The follow-up to 2017 debut album FM-2030, will be out on April 26. Pre-order your copy here.

After touring throughout most of 2017 and 2018 with STRFKR, Cults, and Of Montreal, the band returned home and went straight into renowned Portland studio Jackpot to record VALIS.

Titled after the 1981 Philip K. Dick novel, VALIS is a cohesive collection of songs unified in sound and structure and supported by recurring lyrical themes. Reptaliens wanted to recreate the warmth of something personal and familiar, while also providing the listener with the room to create a unique and personal relationship with the music. This duality can be found in the constructs, themes, and imagery portrayed through vocalist and bassist Bambi’s lyrical concepts. Juxtaposed against the backdrop of friendly and lighthearted pop hooks and melodies, Bambi engages her audience through motifs of loneliness, longing, abduction, isolation, and change as well as love and personal connection.

Musically, VALIS remains consistent with Reptaliens’ sound: 80’s analog synthesizers, tape delay echos, and a dreamy blend of guitar lines which ebb and flow throughout Bambi’s melodies. The songs are phantasmagoric, recorded with their signature lo-fi simplistic production.

The band have also dropped the video for their catchy new single "Shuggie II", directed, edited and filmed by Cole Browning. Watch it below.

01. Sunrise, Sunset

"Step Back" is a reflection of the pain and helplessness that comes with loving someone who is lost in the fog of addiction. We have all been touched by the effects of drug and alcohol issues, which often leave us feeling bewildered. Lurking in the shadows all around us, addiction is the monster that has taken too many people we love away from us. This song is a plea to get them back." - Julia Kugel

This song talks about how I sometimes make myself fully emotionally available to people who can’t reciprocate because of their own insecurities, and the frustration that ensues … This song is my tongue-in-cheek exploration of those ideas — being kind, not taking shit from anyone, and learning to hold people accountable for their own choices, while still holding some empathy for them...

The follow-up to 2016 debut album So Long Forever, will be out on 12th July via Fiction Records. Pre-order your copy here.

“I’m writing this song, to help you breathe again,” sings Leo Wyndham on the opening title track, a shimmering ode to survival. By the epic, seven minute-plus closer Heaven Up There, the theme of Life After is obvious. “Hope,” says Leo. “Hope and positivity – seeing the light at the end of a long tunnel. We threw our all at it, doing things that made us uncomfortable, because you wither and die if you don’t keep moving. Mark Hollis, lead singer of Talk Talk, has reportedly died, aged 64

Mark Hollis, frontman of the band Talk Talk, has died at the age of 64, according to reports.

The reports included a tweet from his cousin-in-law, the paediatrician Anthony Costello, and a tribute by Talk Talk’s bassist Paul Webb, who wrote: ‘I am very shocked and saddened to hear the news of the passing of Mark Hollis. Musically he was a genius and it was a honour and a privilege to have been in a band with him. ‘I have not seen Mark for many years, but like many musicians of our generation I have been profoundly influenced by his trailblazing musical ideas. He knew how to create depth of feeling with sound and space like no other. He was one of the greats, if not the greatest.’

Talk Talk’s bassist Mark Webb, aka Rustin Man, paid tribute to Hollis on Instagram. “I am very shocked and saddened to hear the news of the passing of Mark Hollis,” he wrote. “Musically he was a genius and it was a honour and a privilege to have been in a band with him. I have not seen Mark for many years, but like many musicians of our generation I have been profoundly influenced by his trailblazing musical ideas.”

In an interview with Q’s backpages at the time, later republished in the Guardian, Hollis expressed awareness that he could be “a difficult geezer” but that was because he refused to “play that game” that came with the role of musician in the spotlight.

“It’s certainly a reaction to the music that’s around at the moment, ‘cos most of that is shit,” Hollis also said of Spirit of Eden. “It’s only radical in the modern context. It’s not radical compared to what was happening 20 years ago. If we’d have delivered this album to the record company 20 years ago they wouldn’t have batted an eyelid.”

RIP Mr. Hollis

Watch: Flamingods Share Music Video For "Marigold"

London//Bahrain psych/funk four-piece Flamingods have shared the video for their newest single "Marigold".

The song is part of our current playlist and is taken from release their upcoming fourth studio album ‘Levitation’, set to arrive on 3rd May via Moshi Moshi Records. Pre-order your copy here.

Directed by Barbu.TV, the video was shot on a trip to Oman which involved hazardous border crossings, Omani motorbike riders and the band creating their own ornate jackets. Shooting the video in and around the remote city of Nizwa you’re taken on a vibrant journey, featuring innovative camerawork and hypnotic animation.

“We had heard about this gang of motorbike riding youths through our friend and knew immediately that we wanted to make a music video with them. They live in a remote city in Oman called Nizwa and have had these vintage bikes passed down from generation to generation. I think the motion of them riding the bikes melded with the motorik groove of the song perfectly and the sun-soaked environment was just what we needed to capture the song’s themes".
