New Entry: Home Counties Share New Single "Modern Yuppies"

English indie rock/punk/alt band Home Counties have shared their new single "Modern Yuppies".

The "a-state-of-the-art", is the first of two self-produced tracks they’ll be putting out on Alcopop Records.

Singer Will Harrison says of the track, “Synths and drum machines were already something we were very keen to explore and 2020 provided us with an unexpected amount of free time to experiment. We dialled the disco influences up to the max and totally embraced that 70’s-cop-drama vibe for this pair of stand-alone singles. It feels like a bold declaration of who we are and it definitely gives a clearer taste of where we’re heading for our next EP.”

“The song is a comparison between the young urban professionals of the 1980s to those of today,” he adds. “It discusses the differences, the way that arrogance and conservatism have made way for self-doubt and socially ‘liberal’ political positions. Ultimately however, they are both plagued by the same condition - of constantly needing more.”

The band's debut EP ‘Redevelopment’ was included in our BEST 40 EPs of 2020 chart.

New Entry: Social Contract Drop New Single "Waterside Mews"

London indie rock/prog rock/post punk/psych band Social Contract have dropped for their new single "Waterside Mews".

The song is taken from their forthcoming second EP 'Buzzards Wake', which will be available on March 12th through Pantherburn Records.

Written off the back of their 3 support slots on Do Nothing’s UK tour at the end of 2019, the track, written from the imagined perspective of a dogwalker who stumbles upon a dead body tied to a tree in frontman Josh Eggerton’s sleepy Schroptshire hometown, kicks off with their usual abrasive yet melodic guitar sounds created by Eggerton and Scott Roach (touring member of Blaenavon and Happyness), which soar over a driving bassline and anchored in by tight drums.

Eggerton says of the track: "When I was younger I remember being horrified of what had happened - a man found naked, tied to a tree, it was like something out of movie, and something that doesn’t happen often in sleepy Shropshire. Obviously it was all over local news for quite some time. I’d often have nightmares of being the person to discover this figure in the morning fog, tied to the tree completely lifeless. I decided to write the lyrics through the eyes of whoever first discovered him and how both they and the local press would have tried to digest what had happened.

For composition, we’d only run through that closing section a few times before the studio. Nothing was cemented. I told the guys to forget what they were doing and just focus on notation. From then on it was free reign and everyone could perform whatever they felt was necessary for that moment. I think we’ve figured out how to build and release tension more effectively to prod at emotions."

Thematically, Murphy says it’s an album that examines the growing pains that come with adolescence.

“I started writing this album 3 years ago. It reflects my growth musically and personally over the past three years. It’s a body of work that truly represents my becoming of a young adult from a teenager.”

Fritz has also shared her new single "Die Happily", which "is about wanting to be around a best friend forever and treasuring every moment spent with them. I think the phrase “die happily” isn’t used enough… I think its very powerful and perfectly sums up the way I felt when I was living these moments with my friends.” Murphy explained.
