SPECTRES Announce New LP 'Nostalgia', Stream "The Head and the Heart"

Vancouver, BC post punk/coldwave/goth band SPECTRES have announced the release of their new album 'Nostalgia'.

The album, produced by ACTORS’ Jason Corbett at Jacknife Sound, will be released on March 13th via Toronto-based Artoffact Records. Pre-order your copy here.

Formed by vocalist and founder Brian Gustavson, SPECTRES is a DIY death-rock outfit that mixes post-punk, the ethic of anarcho-punk, and an incredible knack for writing catchy songs. The band released three independent albums (all reissued by Artoffact Records in 2019) and are ready to stun audiences with their 2020 release Nostalgia.

Emerging from the DIY Punk underground, SPECTRES wanted to blend the grassroots and independent ethic of anarcho-punk with the anomie and cold, modulated sounds of 1980’s post-punk and death-rock genres.

Though the band’s output has matured with time to embrace a wider range of new-wave and shoegaze influences, their ethos remains rooted in DIY punk. The blending of these influences allows for the curious juxtaposition of 80’s influenced pop sensibilities with lyrics that explore the alienation and cynicism of modern life. On the new album, Nostalgia, these influences are carried even further to create a wonderfully crafted suite of songs that evoke the primal sounds of Beastmilk with the melody of Soft Kill.

Check out the album's tracklist and listen to their new single "The Head and the Heart" below.

DMA'S Announce New LP 'The Glow', Stream "Life Is A Game Of Changing"

Aussie jangle pop/indie rock trio DMA'S have announced the release of their third studio album 'The Glow'.

The follow-up to 2018's For Now, was recorded last year between sessions held in West Hollywood and London with Grammy-winning producer Stuart Price (The Killers, New Order, Madonna), and will be release on April 24 via I Oh You Records. Pre-order your copy here.

According to the press release, The Glow’ finds DMA’S fulfilling their world class potential with a collection of songs that are destined for arenas. From their emotive heart to their towering, anthemic hooks, the core traits that have earned the band a growing global following are all in place. But with the help of Price DMA’S have elevated both sides of their sonic spectrum to new heights.

The band have also aired their new single and its accompanying video 'Life Is A Game Of Changing', "an anthemic and euphoric mix of electronica, melodic guitars, pounding drums and O’Dell’s melancholic vocals".

It’s a mission statement that the trio immediately encapsulate within the opening two tracks. A swaggering mash-up of Screamadelica-era attitude, big beat dynamics and modern alt-pop flair, ‘Never Before’ immediately sets the tone. The title track then keeps that energy firing, a rapid-rush of melodic energy, joyous optimism and a new-found confidence in Tommy O’Dell’s vocals. As suggested by the recent single ‘Silver’, DMA’S are expanding the scale of their sound. ‘Criminals’ introduces the biggest contrast on the record, its punchy, groove-focused hook taking flight from its restrained verses. The Lennon-esque intro to ‘Learning Alive’ soon turns itself into something unexpected, pulling on the heart-strings and scaling up the drama with a stirring string section. And yet DMA’S save the biggest surprise for last. ‘Cobracaine’ is a celebration of everything the band can be. It’s a maximalist melting pot of sounds: an escalating wall of guitars - the foundation for a tense, almost trancelike beat with vocals filtered through harmonies and vocoders. And as it hurtles to its mesmerising conclusion, one thing is certain: this is the most fully realised of the band’s three albums to date.

Check out the album's tracklist and watch the video for "Life Is A Game Of Changing" (directed by Bill Bleakley), below.

The Glow Tracklisting:
01. Never Before
02. The Glow
03. Silver
04. Life Is A Game of Changing
05. Criminals
06. Strangers
07. Learning Alive
08. Hello Girlfriend
09. Appointment

Oxford indie rock band Lacuna Common have unveiled their new single "Learn To Feel".

Speaking on the song, frontman Alfie Franks explains, “It’s a song about seeing the men around our hometown feel like they need to compete with each other to be this ‘alpha male’ character. It’s a pack mentality and a poison and it frustrates me. I don’t really like to write quote-unquote ‘political’ songs, but I felt like I needed to put this sentiment across. We’re not ‘the political band or ‘the band that doesn’t want to be the political band’ - there’s enough of both knocking around at the moment. We just write about what’s in front of us, good or bad.”

Deeper Announce New LP 'Auto-Pain', Unveil New Single/Video "This Heat"

Chicago post punk/indie rock band Deeper have announced the release of their second studio album 'Auto-Pain'.

Recorded and mixed by Chicago scene luminary Dave Vetraino (Lala Lala, Dehd) and mastered at Chicago Mastering by Greg Obis (Ne-Hi, Melkbelly),  the 12-track album will be out on March 27th through Fire Talk and finds the band embracing open space, using synths to create shadows where bricks of guitars once would’ve blocked out the sun. Pre-order your copy here.

The group — singer and guitarist Nic Gohl, bassist Drew McBride, and drummer Shiraz Bhatti — were all graduates of Chicago’s rich DIY scene who came together around their love of Wire, Devo, Gang of Four, and Television.

While the new record is still within the Great Lakes post-punk tradition of their debut, the album isn’t as insular as its predecessor; it’s less interested in pile-driving and more willing to dwell in liminal spaces. Guitars enter the picture precisely, locked bass grooves propel things forward. Drummer Shiraz Bhatti, who is half-Pakistani and half-Native American, embraced the drumming patterns he’d heard growing up at pow-wows, channeling the anxieties of his heritage into his playing and keeping the group grounded when they switch into all-out percussive attack. The result is an album both more nuanced and catchy.

Auto-Pain represents the constant wave of depression felt by many in everyday life. Stemmed from Aldous Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’, Auto-Pain is a concept meant to be an inverse to soma, a pill in the book which makes everything numb. The idea of auto-pain is to epitomize the desire to return to a connection with thoughts and clarity, which comes at the expense of feeling everything simultaneously. The album artwork features the now-demolished Prentice Women’s Hospital in Chicago capturing the band’s rounded-off brutalism, and the album title appears in Urdu, a nod to drummer Shiraz Bhatti’s Pakistani heritage.

Check out the album's tracklist and watch the video for their new single "This Heat" below.

Yumi Zouma Announce New LP, Share New Single/Video "Cool For A Second"

New Zealand-based indie pop band Yumi Zouma have announced the release of their third studio album 'Truth or Consequences'.

The follow-up to 2017's Willowbank, will be out on March 13th through Polyvinyl Records. {re-order your copy here.

Distance has become a recurring theme in Yumi Zouma’s work. This makes sense given the far-flung cities the group of musicians currently call home: New York City for Burgess, London for Ryder, Wellington for Campion, and Simpson remaining in their native Christchurch. Of course, distance can also manifest metaphorically, and it’s in these figurative chasms that Truth or Consequences, Yumi Zouma’s new record finds its narrative: romantic and platonic heartbreak, real and imagined emotional distance, disillusionment, and being out of reach. There are no answers, there’s very seldom closure, but there is an undeniable release that comes from saying the truth, if only to oneself.

“In the age we’re living in, there’s an emphasis on making things clear cut” says Burgess about the album’s title. “But in life and in art, nothing is ever that definitive. The truth is usually in the gray zones, and I think that’s so much of what we were trying to explore and understand on this album.”

Whilst exploring these realms, Yumi Zouma deliberately pursued a deeper sense of collaboration in order to craft a record that reflects the bond between them. Produced by the band and mixed by engineer Jake Aron (Solange, Grizzly Bear, Snail Mail), Truth or Consequences stems from sessions in Los Angeles, London, and Christchurch, where the band actively took a collegial approach, often working note-by-note, to ensure the foundations of the album reflected a sense of togetherness.

“We wanted to make the songwriting process as egalitarian as possible. Completely sharing the process helped us feel like we were capturing a purer sense of atmosphere,” says Ryder.

Album centerpiece “Cool For A Second” coalesces the motif of isolation and its ensuing fallout into a letter to a past connection: Whilst on “Truer Than Ever,” the band draws inspiration from the classics to radiate a brazen spirit of perseverance. “I love the duality in a lot of disco songs, where they’re incredibly upbeat, but there’s real frustration in the lyrics – sort of like, ‘Nothing’s going the way I want, but I’ve got to deal with it any way I can,’” Simpson says.

Watch: The Ninth Wave Reveal "Flower into Wounds" Music Video

Glasgow noise pop/post-punk band The Ninth Wave have reveal the video for their latest single "Flower into Wounds".

The song is part of our current playlist and is taken from their debut album  'Infancy', released in November last year. Grab it here.

The band's words: “The title of this song was influenced from the opening line of a chapter in J. G. Ballard’s infamous novel ‘Crash’, in which the protagonist discovers his arousal when is body is harmed in car crashes. As the book progresses, his body becomes more battered and bruised, with him explaining that his body is “flowering into wounds”. I thought this was a beautiful way to describe something so grotesque and it resonated with myself in a different situation. Put plainly, Flower Into Wounds is a song about emotional masochism and finding some sort of enjoyment in having your heart battered and bruised. Joern Utkilen, Amelia’s uncle, directed this video and helped us present the essence of this song visually..”.

New Entry: White Flowers Air New Single "Night Drive"

Preston, UK dream pop/ shoegaze/noir pop duo White Flowers (Katie Drew and Joey Cobb) have  aired their ethereal new single "Night Drive".

The song is out now and is taken from their debut AA side 12" Night Drive / Portra, out 14th February via Tough Love. Pre-order your copy here.

Co-produced by Doves’ guitarist, Jez Williams, Night Drive’s guitars carry a Kevin Shields-esque drone, as they swirl above its fragmented arrangement. Apocalyptic in nature, it twists and turns - thematically covering anxiety, fragility and frustration, while reminding that, even in the lowest of moments, one should not lose hope.

‘Creating and crafting the songs has always been a therapeutic outlet for us,’ Cobb stated. ‘It’s been a long process, but it’s been one which has helped us deal with the frustration, worries and difficulties that come with every day life. It’s definitely a very cathartic record. It serves as a kind of journal of growing up and maturing in the 21st Century.’

Watch: KYTES Release New Single/Video "Go Out"

Munich-based indie pop/rock quartet KYTES have released the video for their brand new single "Go Out".

The song is taken from their forthcoming second album ‘good luck’, which will be out on February 28 via their own label Frisbee Records. Pre-order your copy here.

About the song, the band said: “‘Go Out’ is a song that throws us right back to our teenage days. Life was way easier. After school we’d just ring on each others doorbells and hang out. No smartphones needed. No group chats, no voice memos or video chats. If we couldn’t just go out, we called on this thing called the landline telephone. Some of you may still know it. So we feel ‘Go Out‘ is a throwback song, lots of nostalgia, good memories… and it’s definitely gonna be a banger live.”
