Yumi Zouma Announce New LP, Share New Single/Video "Cool For A Second"

New Zealand-based indie pop band Yumi Zouma have announced the release of their third studio album 'Truth or Consequences'.

The follow-up to 2017's Willowbank, will be out on March 13th through Polyvinyl Records. {re-order your copy here.

Distance has become a recurring theme in Yumi Zouma’s work. This makes sense given the far-flung cities the group of musicians currently call home: New York City for Burgess, London for Ryder, Wellington for Campion, and Simpson remaining in their native Christchurch. Of course, distance can also manifest metaphorically, and it’s in these figurative chasms that Truth or Consequences, Yumi Zouma’s new record finds its narrative: romantic and platonic heartbreak, real and imagined emotional distance, disillusionment, and being out of reach. There are no answers, there’s very seldom closure, but there is an undeniable release that comes from saying the truth, if only to oneself.

“In the age we’re living in, there’s an emphasis on making things clear cut” says Burgess about the album’s title. “But in life and in art, nothing is ever that definitive. The truth is usually in the gray zones, and I think that’s so much of what we were trying to explore and understand on this album.”

Whilst exploring these realms, Yumi Zouma deliberately pursued a deeper sense of collaboration in order to craft a record that reflects the bond between them. Produced by the band and mixed by engineer Jake Aron (Solange, Grizzly Bear, Snail Mail), Truth or Consequences stems from sessions in Los Angeles, London, and Christchurch, where the band actively took a collegial approach, often working note-by-note, to ensure the foundations of the album reflected a sense of togetherness.

“We wanted to make the songwriting process as egalitarian as possible. Completely sharing the process helped us feel like we were capturing a purer sense of atmosphere,” says Ryder.

Album centerpiece “Cool For A Second” coalesces the motif of isolation and its ensuing fallout into a letter to a past connection: Whilst on “Truer Than Ever,” the band draws inspiration from the classics to radiate a brazen spirit of perseverance. “I love the duality in a lot of disco songs, where they’re incredibly upbeat, but there’s real frustration in the lyrics – sort of like, ‘Nothing’s going the way I want, but I’ve got to deal with it any way I can,’” Simpson says.

Check out the album's tracklist and the video for their new single "Cool For A Second" below:

Truth or Consequences Tracklist:
01. Lonely After
02. Right Track / Wrong Man
03. Southwark
04. Sage
05. Mirror To The Fire
06. Cool For A Second
07. Truer Than Ever
08. My Palms Are Your Reference To Hold To Your Heart
09. Magazine Bay

Watch: The Ninth Wave Reveal "Flower into Wounds" Music Video

Glasgow noise pop/post-punk band The Ninth Wave have reveal the video for their latest single "Flower into Wounds".

The song is part of our current playlist and is taken from their debut album  'Infancy', released in November last year. Grab it here.

The band's words: “The title of this song was influenced from the opening line of a chapter in J. G. Ballard’s infamous novel ‘Crash’, in which the protagonist discovers his arousal when is body is harmed in car crashes. As the book progresses, his body becomes more battered and bruised, with him explaining that his body is “flowering into wounds”. I thought this was a beautiful way to describe something so grotesque and it resonated with myself in a different situation. Put plainly, Flower Into Wounds is a song about emotional masochism and finding some sort of enjoyment in having your heart battered and bruised. Joern Utkilen, Amelia’s uncle, directed this video and helped us present the essence of this song visually..”.

‘Creating and crafting the songs has always been a therapeutic outlet for us,’ Cobb stated. ‘It’s been a long process, but it’s been one which has helped us deal with the frustration, worries and difficulties that come with every day life. Surf Rock Is Dead Announce Debut LP 'Existential Playboy', Stream "Diabolik"

Brooklyn-based indie pop/surf rock duo Surf Rock Is Dead (aka Kevin Pariso and Joel Witenberg) have announced the release of their highly-anticipated debut album 'Existential Playboy'.

The self-produced record will be out on May 1st.

Kevin Pariso and Joel Witenberg will tell you they don’t take themselves too seriously. Hence the name of their band, Surf Rock Is Dead (that’s SRiD for short), and the title of their debut album, Existential Playboy. This playfulness informs their music, a hybrid of surf rock, shoegaze, goth, and new wave, through which the duo meditate on the paradoxes of modern life.

While SRiD’s first two EPs, 2015’s SRiD and 2017’s We Have No Friends? were a product of jam sessions, Surf Rock is Dead’s debut album is the result of a more deliberate writing structure.

Much of Existential Playboy, like the majority of SRiD’s music, is about interpersonal relationships, living in New York, and navigating through the world during uncertain times. Existential Playboy is also about confronting mortality. In the wake of a close friend’s death, as the band was in the midst of putting this record together, Witenberg and Pariso reflected even more deeply on the themes that characterize their music. The record’s title is a nod to life’s absurdities. “Why are we doing what we do? What even matters?”

Existential Playboy is a balanced mix of older, jammier tracks, and newer, poppier ones, like the moody and jangly kiss-off, “Diabolik,” or the album’s lead single, the anxiously romantic “Away Message,” on which Pariso sings about new and exciting romantic feelings.

Speaking about their new single "Diabolik", the band explained: "Diabolik is about dealing with some extreme situations we’ve encountered living with various people in NYC. Sometimes you never know what you’re going to get… Whether it be a roommate sleeping on the bathroom floor, a pile of who-knows-what on the living room floor or strangers ending up in YOUR room, sometimes it’s not exactly how you imagined your life. ‘Diabolik’ is a venting of those crazy roommate situations that suck in the moment, but given enough time, actually are pretty damn funny.”

The song is out today (Jan 16) via Negative Gain in North America and Danse Macabre Records in Europe, and is taken from the upcoming album 'Here Lies', which will be out soon.

“Capulet Loves Montague tells the tale of heartbreak and woe. How two people can fall in love but ultimately will be their undoing.” says frontman Mychael. “Lyrically, “Capulet Loves Montague” came to life while my 11-year young best friend and I were fooling around with crayons on a rainy evening. Perhaps it was the colors that made it clear, a nursery rhyme was being created. A feeling of innocence came over me when the words “Christmas trees are frozen spiders, Cats are made from snow, terrified by what I think of, petrified in love” were written. I’m obsessed with silliness, which is often mistaken for my sadness, especially when it comes to storytelling.” He adds.

Vundabar Announce New LP 'Either Light', Air New Single/Video "Burned Off"

Boston indie rock/surf band Vundabar have announced the release of their new album titled 'Either Light'.

The follow-up to 2018's Smell Smoke, was recorded at Gradwell House and Retro City Studios with producer Patrick Hyland (Mitski) and will be out on March 20 via Gawk Records. Pre-order your copy here.

“The album is about the transitional lightness that follows a period of heaviness” said singer/guitarist Brandon Hagen in a press statement. “After years of being caught up in a dark period marked by sickness, strife and worry, and using it as the context in which I saw myself, I suddenly found I’d outgrown that story. With that came a feeling of lightness that was opposite the feeling which preceded it.”

The band have also aired the video for their new single "Burned Off", which according to Hagen "explores that surreal and sometimes inexplicable moment of interior shift, the fog lifting, and the way our internal state informs our external experience. It could turn light into a puddle or a puddle into light, but then it burns off! Temporary and dual. We see our protagonist wet, we see our protagonist dry, we see our protagonist ruminating and then looking to the future, finally finding solace in the ephemeral, the chorus a reassurance of what’s now known.”

Moaning Announce New LP 'Uneasy Laughter', Share New Single/Video "Ego"

Los Angeles post punk/shoegaze trio Moaning have announced the release of their 'Uneasy Laughter'.

The 13-track album was produced by Alex Newport (At The Drive-In, Bloc Party, Melvins) and will be out on March 20 through Sub Pop Records. Get your copy here.

Uneasy Laughter is a collaborative breakthrough which significantly brightens Moaning’s once claustrophobic sound, again abetted by producer/engineer Alex Newport (At The Drive-In, Bloc Party, Melvins). The trio points to first single “Ego,” which features a costume-heavy video directed by Ambar Navarro, as an embodiment of this evolution.

Solomon admits Uneasy Laughter could have gone in quite another direction had he not gotten sober and educated himself on such core subjects as gender and mental health. “I did a lot of reading in the tour van — authors like bell hooks, Mark Fisher, and Alain de Botton, all really inspired me. I don’t want to be the person who influences young people to go get high and become cliche tragic artists,” he says. “What I’d rather convey to people is that they’re not alone in what they think and how they feel. ‘Ego’ specifically and the album overall is about those themes — letting go of your bullshit so you can help other people and be present.”

“We want to be part of a community,” he adds. “I wrote online about being sober for a year, and I had kids from all over writing and asking for advice. One of them said, ‘For the first time I can remember, I didn’t drink last night.’ I thought, for once, maybe we did something besides sell a record. That’s a win. That’s incredibly exciting.”

Real Estate Announce New LP 'The Main Thing', Stream "Paper Cup"

New Jersey indie rockers Real Estate have announced the release of their fifth studio album 'The Main Thing'.

The follow-up to 2017’s In Mind February 28th via Domino Records, according to the press release, it delivers the band’s most inspired and self-aware set of songs to date, created over the course of a year at upstate New York’s Marcata Sound. Pre-order your copy here.

Following his work on 2011’s Days, engineer Kevin McMahon returns as producer, and, for the first time ever, Real Estate have brought in outside instrumentalists and special guests like Sylvan Esso, whose vocalist Amelia Meath features on first single, “Paper Cup”. Across the 13 interrogative tracks – as full of depth, strangeness, and contradictions as they are lifting hooks – the band balances existential, environmental, and political anxieties with fatherly sentiments, self-satirizing lyrics, forever-lively guitar lines, and shimmering strings.

On “Paper Cup” and the making of The Main Thing, Martin Courtney says: “Paper Cup is a song about getting older and realizing that this thing that I fell into doing over ten years ago - being a musician, writing songs, being a guy in a band - this may end up being my life’s work. Watching the people around me change and evolve, take on new challenges, and feeling sort of stuck in a rut, in a way. Feeling uncertain of the validity of being an artist in an age of climate change and general political and social unrest around the world. It’s a song about questioning your chosen path in life and searching for meaning in what you do.

Those questions don’t really get resolved in this song, but ironically, the process of making this record - really diving deep and trying to make it the best thing we’ve ever made - reaffirmed in me, and I think in all of us in this band, why we are doing this.”

The Main Thing dives even further into the musical dichotomies they’re known for—lilting, bright guitar lines set against emotionally nuanced lyrics, complex arrangements conveyed breezily— and what emerges is a superlative collection of interrogative songs as full of depth, strangeness and contradictions as they are lifting hooks.

Check out the album's tracklist and watch the video for "Paper Cup", below.

The 11-track album was recorded in Studio G Brooklyn with producer/engineer Joel Hamilton (Iggy Pop, Jolie Holland) and will be out on March 6th through Epitaph Records. Pre-order your copy here.

On this album, the band confronts the countless disappointments and injustices they deal with every day: the reckless hypocrisy of people in power, social media’s erosion of genuine connection, dudes who feel inexplicably entitled to share their most loathsome opinions. But even in their most exasperated moments, THICK sustains ferocious energy and untamed joy, ultimately turning every song into a wildly cathartic anthem.

“A lot of these songs came from feeling stifled in silence, but then the song itself is an answer to that,” says vocalist, bassist, & guitarist Kate Black. “It’s us saying, ‘I have my opinion, and I’m going to share it no matter what.’ Instead of keeping things all bottled up, it feels so much better to face everything head on, and just be really loud about it with your two best friends.”

The band have also shared the video for the title track, vocalist and guitarist Nikki Sisti explains: “it's about how we always feel five years behind in life, at least as far as the expectations of the world around us. It’s something we’re constantly battling, but at the same time we know that there’s no real timeline—there’s no time limit for doing what we want to do.”

Victories At Sea Detail New LP 'Everybody’s Lost And All I Want Is To Leave'

Birmingham post punk/indie rock band Victories at Sea have revealed full details of their second studio album 'Everybody's Lost And All I Want Is To Leave'.

Recorded on the shores of Loch Fyne and mixed in their native Birmingham, the 10-track album will be out on 21st February via Dutch imprint Gentlemen Recordings. Pre-order your copy here.

According to the press release, the record, refines and redefines the sound of Victories at Sea. Everybody’s Lost and All I Want Is to Leave was conceived and realised as a statement. A permanent marker of the pinnacle of the trio’s possible creation, an honest and direct expression of the collective power of the three band members.

The band's words: "It’s been a long time coming, we began writing this record in the Highlands of Scotland back in the summer of 2018, full time, day and night in an isolated studio on the banks of Loch Fyne in a live room far from home. It was the best thing the three of us could have done. Away from the distractions and anxieties of real life, what came out was a collection of ideas and new songs informed by the environment and the openness and beauty of the hills and mountains surrounding us as well as the escapism of being out of the city. It saved us and revitalised us."

This album is more than a collection of songs, it stands as a collective of artistic work designed at every point to demonstrate a belief in the power of the album, the power of music, the power of words. Something beautiful that would remain forever.

Watch: Humanist Airs New Single/Video "Shock Collar (Feat. Dave Gahan)"

Humanist,  the brainchild of producer and Exit Calm guitarist Rob Marshall, has teamed up with Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan on new single "Shock Collar".

The song is taken from his eponymous debut album, set to arrive on February 21st via ignition Records. Pre-order your copy here.

Gahan comments; “It was a pleasure to be asked to be a part of Rob’s ‘Humanist’ project. Mark Lanegan asked me, and I liked the idea immediately… It’s a beast! I went for the vocal, with the visual of driving fast on an empty highway… We shot the video over a couple of days in New York, and it all came together”. Rob Marshall continues; “I’d been writing a lot of music at the time for the record, and I was really getting back into big guitar tracks again, and I had a song (which would eventually become ‘Shock Collar) that I felt could be a great single. It was something special when Dave said he would sing this. He’s achieved so much over the years, an incredible front man, with such a soaring voice and presence, but with no trademark tone of celebrity or ego whatsoever. Very humble, gentle and giving. When we shot the video, he worked extremely hard on the day, performing each take with total gusto and energy, which didn’t let up throughout his performances.”

The project features the vocals of Mark Lanegan (Queens Of The Stone Age), Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode), Mark Gardener (Ride), Carl Hancock Rux (David Holmes, Portishead), John Robb (The Membranes), Joel Cadbury (UNKLE), Ilse Maria, Ron Sexsmith and Jim Jones (The Jim Jones Revue, Thee Hypnotics).

The video was directed by Derrick Belcham and Tracy Maurice. Watch it below.
