Speaking about it, the band said “Little Gem is about relationships and gardening. We call Lucy [PBE drums and synths] The Emo Gardener. She’d painstakingly cultivate her little greenhouse only to be left distraught when the tomatoes got blight – swearing and weeping by the compost heap. The song is a metaphor for our band's journey. It’s about breaking down, then finding a way around – growing new tunes, cultivating them and sometimes having to start again from scratch.”
The accompanying video, directed by Dylan Friese-Green and Aubrey Simpson, captures the band on the road, crammed into a Nissan Micra, cruising through the English countryside.

'Diablo' is a place of giddy echoes, 808 boings, sexy-menacing vocals and soft throbs, with lyrics full of pleasure and desire; like proper rave lyrics, they are in turn filthy, grandiose, devotional, and cryptic. A record with a city-edge heard on every track, most of them pure dancefloor fire. Influenced by Detroit techno, deep house, electro and artists including Peaches, Suicide and Eurythmics.
Gurnsey has also dropped the video for the album's lead single and opening track “Push".

Freakout/Release is another dizzying high in a multi-decade career that’s seen Hot Chip continuing to innovate and develop a rich, resonant songcraft. And while they continue to operate at peak form, the album also feels like a new chapter for the group—a collection of flesh-and-blood songs that finds the band reaching into the darkness to emerge as a true creative unit, their gazes fixed positively on the future ahead.
“We were living through a period where it was very easy to feel like people were losing control of their lives in different ways,” Joe Goddard explains of the album’s themes. “There’s a darkness that runs through a lot of those tracks.”

Staying true to the title, ‘HAUNTED’ is a soul-stirring soundscape that sees Mild Minds tap into his trademark blend of driving synths and captivating vocals.
I think we had all spent a part of 2020 contemplating a lot about our own lives, while feeling a general sense of darkness looming over whether we'd be losing loved ones, or not. For a lot of us we did. The heaviness of it all led me to explore more melancholic themes in my music. I found myself breaking down all of the shades that might be associated with melancholy; exploring death, loss, rebirth, and the associated beauty. This ultimately led me to wanting to use flowers on the artwork, being something that both dies and blooms again each year. At the same time I was re-learning piano, or even in a way properly learning piano. It was such a rush to be feeling the music through touch and finding an ability to speak through it. I found myself playing a set of similar chords over and over through the first half of the year; verses, choruses, outros. Slowly but surely, this song formed from a combination of those. This was immediately one of my favorite tracks I've ever written. - Mild Minds

On 'Afterlife', which features Eleonora on vocals, a percolating bassline acts as the foundation for Eleonora's wistful spoken word. Her lyrics tell the story of her experience in the afterlife and the questions she asks while she's there. Meanwhile, the instrumental goes through peaks and troughs, sparking head nodding and two-stepping in abundance.

“We weren’t thinking of releasing this as a single but with the sun coming out and a slight sense of hope for the future, it seemed fitting,” says the duo about the song. “It’s a song that we think captures - lyrically and musically - the remembrance of great summers past, out in the streets with your mates, but also the warmth of now, of less clothes, of possibility friendships, summer nights, dancing.”

Known for their bombastic strobe-lit live performances and immaculate studio production, their sound can be described as heavy, apocalyptic electronic body music for the club.
