Alvvays Air New Singles/Videos "Belinda Says" & "Very Online Guy"

Toronto-based jangle pop/alt band Alvvays have aired two new singles "Belinda Says" and "Very Online Guy", alongside an accompanying music videos.

The song is the second single from their forthcoming new album ‘Blue Rev', set to be releases on October 7. Pre-order your copy here.

Blue Rev doesn’t simply reassert what’s always been great about Alvvays but instead reimagines it. They have, in part and sum, never been better. There are 14 songs on Blue Rev, making it not only the longest Alvvays album but also the most harmonically rich and lyrically provocative.

The songs of Blue Rev thrive on immediacy and intricacy, so good on first listen that the subsequent spins where you hear all the details are an inevitability.

Cool Sounds Share New Single "Like That"

Melbourne indie/jangle pop band Cool Sounds have shared their new single "Like That".

The song serves as the title track of their upcoming fifth studio album 'Like That', set to be released on October 7 via Chapter Music. Pre-order your copy here.

The title track is a moment of introspection on the album, like the ballad in an eighties teen movie. Cool Sounds’ pop polymath.

Dainis Lacey says:

"I sometimes like to create worlds and narratives that are too large to fit into a song and then pick and choose parts. In this track a gym rat and a business man become unlikely friends, and both have near death experiences. When I was writing this I was thinking about 80s shoegaze bands like Jesus and Mary Chain. It's a sound that feels equally at home with both blissfully romantic or somewhat seedier content."

S.C.A.B. Announce New Self-Titled LP, Stream "Tuesday"

New York indie rock/jangle pop/post punk band S.C.A.B. have announced the release of their second studio album 'S.C.A.B.'

The follow-up to the band’s debut album, 2019’s Beauty & Balance, will be out on November 11. Pre-order your copy here.

Originally a working title representing the first letters of the band members’ names (Sean, Cory, Alec, Brandon), S.C.A.B. is an acronym with a shifting meaning – its phonetic double acting as a metaphor for protection and healing for a group that’s always been there for one another.

Following the release of their debut LP, COVID-19 put the brakes on the Brooklyn-based band’s burgeoning career. Not content with sitting still, the band decided to travel down to Georgia to record their sophomore, self-titled LP (S.C.A.B.), which they engineered and produced themselves. (side note: Brandon, the letter "B" in S.C.A.B., does play on this record, but has since left the group to focus on solo work under the name Hayfitz). Having distance from their beloved city during this unprecedented, tragic time helped them hone a sound that is even more distinctly New York.

Frontman Sean Camargo, whose parents immigrated from Ecuador and Bolivia as teenagers, was born in Elmhurst, Queens. His lyrics are colored with nostalgic memories of 90s Bushwick, where his grandparents later settled, alongside sardonic observations of the contemporary city where he landed again after stops in Maryland and Massachusetts. Each song on S.C.A.B. contains snapshots of New York moments that feel hazy with nostalgia, yet are the result of being present through transformational circumstances, no matter how seemingly small. As a self-titled effort, it solidifies the band’s mastery of balancing raucous, distorted guitars with glimmering spoken word passages and a pop-infused melodic confidence.

The angular guitar passages in lead single “Tuesday” conjure up trains skidding across deteriorated subway platforms, as Camargo declares he's "trying to let go of everyone I’ve ever loved," reflecting a relatable disillusionment with trying to form meaningful connections, and searching aimlessly for something worthwhile. Thematically, S.C.A.B. covers an array of topics ranging from grief (“Small Talk”), as Camargo describes bonding with another band member over the loss of a parent, to infatuation with a partner you know is ultimately bad for you (“Why Do I Dream Of You”).

S.C.A.B. is a result of four musicians, a tight-knit group, best friends: the kind of rare conditions that allow for such raw, emotionally-charged music. When the members of a band are this close, able to protect each other from the world outside it, they are a force to be reckoned with. As Frank Sinatra famously sang about the city, “Green beams of steel, making me feel, like I’m home again”. S.C.A.B. embodies that sentiment and evokes the intangible magic that is New York City.

Check out the album's tracklist and watch the video for “Tuesday”, below.

Ducks Ltd. Air "In Between Days Feat. Jane Inc" (The Cure cover)

Toronto jangle pop band Ducks Ltd. have aired their cover version of The Cure classic "Sheets of Grey" featuring Toronto-based experimental-pop artist, Jane Inc.

This is the first cover of a series by Ducks Ltd. called The Sincerest Form Of Flattery, out on Carpark Records. Get it here.

About the cover, frontman Tom McGreevy states: “Robert Smith is a genius and the Cure are the best and I absolutely love this song. It’s such a simple one but all of the pieces slot together so neatly. We listened to all the demos he made of it, and it’s cool to hear how clearly the fundamental parts of it are realized on the very first one, even though he doesn’t have any lyrics yet and is just wordlessly singing the melody (which I also do when we demo stuff!). We mostly tracked this one on a day off when we were on tour with Nation of Language, so the vocal was tracked in the front seat of a parked Mitsubishi Outlander in the middle of the night outside an Airbnb in Grand Junction, Colorado. It’s also the first thing we’ve made that our bass player Katie plays on.

Carlyn Bezic (aka Jane Inc) has been a pal for maybe a decade and is one the best musicians in Toronto. I’ve seen her in so many bands and it’s been so cool to watch the Jane Inc project come together, as it feels like she just keeps refining and perfecting a creative vision that was already clear in some of the first projects I saw her in. I’ve wanted to do something with her for forever, so I was super excited she said yes to this!

PS: Someone told me once that Robert Smith only responds to emails on one day a week and it’s always IN ALL CAPS. I have no idea if this is true, but I really want it to be. Also please email me Mr Smith!”

Watch: Cool Sounds Drop New Single/Video "Hello, Alright, You Got That?"

Melbourne indie/jangle pop band Cool Sounds have dropped the video for their brand new single "Hello, Alright, You Got That?".

The song is taken from their forthcoming fifth studio album 'Like That', set to be released on October 7 via Chapter Music. Pre-order your copy here.

Cool Sounds fuse jangle-pop sparkle with a supercharged disco-glam stomp on their new album, resulting in something immediate and irresistible.

'Hello, Alright, You Got That?' combines wry, acerbic lyrics with bright, unstoppable pop-funk, finding a sweet spot between Ian Dury & the Blockheads, Hot Chip and 80s 12” mixes by Francois K.

Cool Sounds polymath Dainis Lacey plays almost everything on the record, with a little help from friends like multi-instrumentalist Dylan Young, saxophonist Pierce Morton and German-born vocalist Ambrin Hasnain (with whom Dainis also plays in Partner Look).

About 'Hello, Alright', Dainis says – “My dad was a fan of that brief period in the early 80s where British punks embraced disco. His uni soccer team sang Ian Dury’s Sex and Drugs and Rock n Roll after a win. I searched for a parallel in my own timeline and arrived at 2010-ish indie dance, which holds an equal amount of nostalgia but still stings with the aftertaste of being able to remember too many details from ‘indie club nights’. I think Hello, Alright borrows from both of these memories.”

New Entry: Old Moon Releases New Single "Soma"

New Hampshire-based post punk/jangle pop musician Old Moon (aka Tom Weir) has released his new single "Soma".

The song is taken from their upcoming new album 'Cities of the Plain', set to arrive on June 3 via Ã  La Carte Records/Love Chain Tapes. Pre-order your copy here.

Weir seamlessly blends elements of post-punk, classic indie, and shoegaze to create a sound that is immediately familiar without falling prey to genre tropes.

Cities of the Plain exists in the clear light of day where guitars chime brightly behind Weir’s introspective vocals. It was written and recorded by Tom Weir with additional drum engineering from Todd Whitehead at Up North Studios and mixed by Shaun Durkan (Soft Kill, Weekend).

“‘Soma’ is a move towards a cleaner, brighter Old Moon sound and the first song that I wrote after finishing up my previous record Altars last year,” says Weir. “It’s about trying to find a path forward even when the future is unclear and about weeding out the things in my life that were dragging me down. I worked with Shaun Durkan again for the mix on this song, and I love the way it came out so differently than the songs on Altars while still occupying a similar sonic space.”
