Telefís, the groundbreaking collaboration between two Irish iconoclasts – acclaimed producer Garret “Jacknife” Lee (U2, REM, The Killers) and revered singer/lyricist Cathal Coughlan – have revealed their new single “The Carthaginians”, alongside an accompanying music video.
The song is taken from their upcoming album 'a Dó' (set to arrive on October 7th). Pre-order your copy here.
"The Carthaginians" and it's a tribute to Irish showbands of the '60s and '70s. The tribute video was directed by Jacknife Lee featuring footage of early U2, Virgin Prunes, Cathal Coughlan & Microdisney and Nun Attax.
Jacknife Lee explains..."When Cathal and I started conversations about what the themes for our second album “a Dó” might be, we kept coming back to the peculiarly Irish phenomenon of the 'showband’, and certainly not in the dismissive way our teenage selves might have approached it but with a curiosity and excitement. Entertainment and community were important to us as teenagers in the late '70s and the '80s and all the bands featured in the video, from the Miami Showband to Nun Attax were born of this, and have more in common with each other than not. When Cathal and I were starting out the thought of us having similar goals and impulses as the regal showband or dickie rock would’ve made us laugh and maybe throw a punch, but now not so. There is a straight line through us all. The post-punk artists featured in the video (as well as the touring showbands) could only have been products of Ireland and we wanted to celebrate the oddness of it all. So we invent ed a showband and called them “The Carthaginians”. The song explores what it’s like to be in a band, the relationship with the audience, the internal dialogues, the branding, the town hopping, the dashed hopes, and the ridiculous fantasies”.

The song is taken from their upcoming album 'a Dó' (set to arrive on October 7th) and is the first of two tracks on the album that feature a guest appearance from Will Sergeant, legendary guitarist and songwriter of Echo & The Bunnymen.
The album was finished several months prior to the sad passing of Cathal Coughlan on May 18th earlier this year. Telefís is Irish for Television and pronounced Tel-eh-feesh. It’s also a nod to the post-punk heroes of the late 70s that dwell in Jacknife and Cathal’s collective consciousness. Their first transmission arrived last Autumn with the twisted electro-funk of “We Need”, a cheeky and satirical look back to the early days of TV in Ireland and the memory fragments of their youth. But as with all of Cathal’s lyrics, there are contemporary lines drawn to today’s power structures and hierarchies. Flights of the imagination ensuring that nothing is ever quite what it may appear.

The song is taken from their forthcoming EP 'Another Fact', set to be released on October 14th via PRAH Recordings. Get it here.
“Another Fact is our ode to the euphoria and strangeness of clubbing. As a group it is a space we all feel quite differently about, so working on this song became an interesting melding of experiences and perspectives. We wanted it to sound like it was being heard from outside a nightclub. We were thinking throughout the lockdown of all of the empty nightclub spaces, those big empty silent rooms must have had a sort of spooky haunted feeling, so we were interested in inserting some of those qualities into the music.” The Umlauts on Another Fact
On the video, The Umlauts explain: "We met Paul during our last London gig at Venue MOT Bermondsey. He offered to dance for us on stage during the festival season, but as we are a 9 piece live, the chance of having enough space on stage for a dancer isn’t very possible, but we had been planning to shoot a music video for our latest single Another Fact so we jumped at the idea of having him dance for the video. A week later, we met Paul at a Pub in Bermondsey, had a few Pints and started shooting. We wanted the video to recreate the crescendo of energy which Another Fact embodies. Paul dances through the streets of Bermondsey bumping into us along the way, intoxicated by the groove of the song. His moves represented the mood of the song perfectly. We ❤️ Paul."
Director Federico Arosio and cinematographer Giulio Amendolagine add: "Working together with The Umlauts, we wanted to incapsulate the energy of the song through long shots and condensed actions. The script was written on the day, which means there was a lot of freedom for improvisation. The track felt very club orientated to me, so Giulio and I decided to play around with the motion of the camera to emphasise Paul’s movements and to capture the variation of lights that surrounded us in the different locations."
