New Entry: Communions Unveil New Single "Learn to Pray"

Danish post-punk/guitar band Communions have unveiled their new single "Learn To Pray".

The song is taken from their upcoming sophomore album 'Pure Fabrication', set to arrive on April 23 via Tambourhinoceros. Pre-order your copy here.

Speaking about it Martin Rehoff says: “While some of the opening songs of Pure Fabrication deal with change, independence, and liberation — forces that allow one to fabricate one’s own destiny — Learn To Pray leans into the middle of the record, and hones in on an opposing theme; being anchored to the fabric of a social world. In a tragic and satirical tone, it tells a little story of a communal fall from grace in the midst of cultural decline. The song paints a somewhat dystopian picture, describing a world where preying and praying are two sides of the same coin; It’s just as much about the wheels set in motion that cause one to prey on one’s surroundings, as it’s about the mechanisms that lead one to pray, perhaps futilely, for a more utopian future.”

Communions Announce New LP 'Pure Fabrication', Stream "Bird of Passage"

Danish post-punk/guitar band Communions have announced the release of their sophomore album 'Pure Fabrication'.

The 15-track album, produced by Mads Brinch Nielsen, will be out on April 23 via Tambourhinoceros. Pre-order your copy here.

In their sophomore album of Odyssian size and scope, Communions weave an intricate tapestry from “cultural debris”. While Pure Fabrication follows the arc of a reverse coming of age story, Communions’ Rehof brothers have arrived at a point of bold artistic maturity.

“While the blueprint of the coming of age story traditionally involves a protagonist who enters the world seeking answers and emerges renewed, with newfound maturity, Pure Fabrication reveals that growth is tricky and may come at a price. The journey into the ‘real’ world only complicates and fractures any vague sense of clarity that one might have had to begin with.” - Martin Rehof

“Pure Fabrication can be understood positively, hinting at the fact that our lives are fabrications that we weave on the basis of desire and freedom. Or, more negatively, it can be taken to mean that the stories we fabricate around ourselves and use to understand our lives are in themselves only mere fabrications—myths or worn out templates that we constantly reproduce, and which perhaps ultimately conceal the powers of whatever is actually pulling the strings, whether that be other people, an underlying culture, or some metaphysical goddess in the sky. The lyrics function as kaleidoscopic mixes of different myths woven together. In this sense, Pure Fabrication can also be understood as a meta-reference to the use of mythic material itself; to all of the ‘cultural debris’, if you will, that gets processed over and over again in new and different ways, as it does here.”

New Entry: Communions Unveil New Single "Splendour"

Danish post-punk/guitar band Communions have unveiled their new single "Splendour".

The song is out today (November 27) via Tambourhinoceros. Buy it here.

While “Splendour” still features the contributions of ex-bandmates Jacob van Deurs Formann (guitar) and Frederik Lind Köppen (drums), Communions are now solely led by the Rehof brothers, Martin and Mads. With their brotherly musical connection at the center, the Rehof brothers have assembled a new five piece constellation going forwards.

It is a song about “a sickly, unattainable love. One which possesses a destructive power.” Communions’ Martin Rehof sings of a “crowd of lovers” under the influence of a lust so intoxicating that it sends them “leaping in the grave”.

“I wouldn’t say that it’s necessarily about a specific person” says Martin Rehof, musing on the song’s multifarious meaning.  He continues: “Rather, in a less concrete sense, it’s about the oppressive power that certain things in life can have over you. For instance, making art is something I love, but not something I feel I can help, and often it can be quite painful and fruitless. It’s like this thing, whatever it is, has chosen you, and not the other way around. It might inflict you with pain, but you almost come to enjoy it; you sort of accept it, embrace it, and maybe even thrive on it. It’s the context of someone addicted to someone or something else — where the power dynamics are skewed.”
