New Entry: Shame Share New Single "This Side of the Sun"

South London post punk/indie rock band Shame have  shared their new single "This Side of the Sun".

“The whole song came together on the day we recorded it at the studio. It’s also the first live recording we’ve ever done, we didn’t want it to sound overworked. It’s a pure banger, listen with a piƱa colada in your left hand,” the band said.

The band' sophomore album 'Drunk Tank Pink', came out earlier this year via Dead Oceans.

Shame Announce New LP 'Drunk Tank Pink', Stream "Water in the Well"

South London post punk/indie rock band Shame have announced the release of their sophomore album 'Drunk Tank Pink'.

The follow-up to 2018's debut Songs Of Praise, was produced by James Ford (Arctic Monkeys), and will be out on January 15th via Dead Oceans. Pre-order your copy here.

There are moments on Drunk Tank Pink where you almost have to reach for the sleeve to check this is the same band who made Songs Of Praise. Such is the jump Shame have made from the riotous post-punk of their debut to the sprawling adventurism and twitching anxieties laid out here. The South Londoner’s blood and guts spirit, that wink and grin of devious charm, is still present, it’s just that it’s grown into something bigger, something deeper, more ambitious and unflinchingly honest.

To cope, guitarist Sean Coyle-Smith barricaded himself in his bedroom. Barely leaving the house and instead obsessively deconstructing his very approach to playing and making music, he picked apart the threads of the music he was devouring (Talking Heads, Nigerian High Life, the dry funk of ESG, Talk Talk…) and created work infused with panic and crackling intensity.

“For this album I was so bored of playing guitar,” he recalls, “the thought of even playing it was mind-numbing. So I started to write and experiment in all these alternative tunings and not write or play in a conventional ‘rock’ way.”

Frontman Charlie Steen, meanwhile, took a different tac and attempted to party his way out of psychosis. “When you’re exposed to all of that for the first time you think you’re fucking indestructible,” he notes. “After a few years you reach a point where you realise everyone need a bath and a good night’s sleep sometimes.”

The genius of Drunk Tank Pink is how Steen’s lyrical themes dovetail with the music. Bassist Josh Finerty had begun to record the band’s divergent ideas at home in South London which were then fleshed out in a writing trip in the Scottish highlands with electronic artist Makeness, before sessions in La Frette studios in France with James Ford. The result is an enormous expansion of Shame’s sonic arsenal.

The band have also aired the video for the album track "Water in the Well". Watch it below the tracklist.

Watch: Shame Return With New Single/Video "Alphabet"

South London post punk/indie rock band Shame have returned with their new single "Alphabet" and its accompanied video.

The song,  produced by James Ford, is out today (SEptember 10) via Dead Oceans. Get it here.

Speaking about it, frontman Charlie Steen said: “Alphabet is a direct question, to the audience and the performer, on whether any of this will ever be enough to reach satisfaction. At the time of writing it, I was experiencing a series of surreal dreams where a manic subconscious was bleeding out of me and seeping into the lyrics. All the unsettling and distressing imagery I faced in my sleep have taken on their own form in the video.”

Shame Announce Debut LP 'Songs Of Praise', Drop New Video For "One Rizla"

South London post punk/indie rock band Shame have announced the release of their debut full-length album titled 'Songs Of Praise'.

The 10-track record will be out on January 12th via Dead Oceans. Pre-order your copy here.

Comprised of vocalist Charlie Steen, guitarists Sean Coyle-Smith and Eddie Green, bassist John Finerty, and drummer Charlie Forbes, they began as school boys. From the outset, Shame built the band up from a foundation of DIY ethos while citing The Fall and Wire among its biggest musical influences.

Utilizing both the grit and sincerity of that musical background, Shame carved out a niche in the South London music scene and then barreled fearlessly into the angular, thrashing post-punk that would go on to make up Songs of Praise, their Dead Oceans debut. From “Gold Hole,” a tongue-in-cheek takedown of rock narcissism, to lead single “Concrete” detailing the overwhelming moment of realizing a relationship is doomed, to the frustrated “Tasteless” taking aim at the monotony of people droning through their day-to-day, Songs of Praise never pauses to catch its breath.

The band have also aired the video for the album track "One Rizla". Watch it below the tracklist.

Songs Of Praise track list:
01. Dust On Trial
02. Concrete
03. One Rizla
04. The Lick
05. Tasteless
06. Donk
07. Gold Hole
08. Friction
09. Lampoon
10. Angie

South London post punk band Shame have premiered the video for their addictive new single "Concrete".

The song has been added to our current playlist and is out today (September 20). Grab it here.

According to frontman Charlie Steen is "about someone who’s trapped in a relationship and they’re being pummelled into surrender. It’s not about a physically abusive relationship – more an emotionally and psychologically draining one. The call-and-response vocals is the central figure’s own internal dialogue. They are dealing with two different things that they don’t want to address."

The video was directed by Homer & Farley. Check out below.
