SPLLIT Unveil Two-Track Single "Ledder Cote / Adobe House"

Baton Rouge, Louisiana art punk/experimental band SPLLIT have unveiled their new two-track single  "Ledder Cote / Adobe House".

The band explained: If we are proud to have an artifact in our odd catalog of bizarre beauties, that's SPLLIT's debut album, released last year on Feel It Records, where these angulars Baton Rouge alligators already made it clear with their first aptly titled single, "Next Level Music", that in music not everything has been invented... Far from it! The only difference between this surprising duo and most of the line-ups who try to perform such acrobatics, is that few bands manage to do it in such an instant, catchy, groovy... And above all unique way, something that is even more enervating with these two new tracks in which they prove their ability to surpass themselves... And now you can call this Post-punk, no wave, new wave... Or whatever you want, we prefer to call it SPLLIT sound!

"A tribute to the adobe house in Presidio, TX where we wrote and recorded for a few days around the new year, 2020-2021. Also serves as a bonus to "Spllit Sides" and as the start of something new."

Ledder Cote was recorded January 2021 in Baton Rouge, LA using the "Presidio method" of drum loop composition.

The recording for Adobe House, began December 2020 in Presidio, TX and was completed July 2022 in Baton Rouge, LA

Italia 90 Announce Debut LP 'Living Human Treasure', Stream "Leisure Activities"

London art punk/avant-punk band Italia 90 have announced the release of their debut full-length album 'Living Human Treasure'.

The 11-track record will be out on January 20th via Brace Yourself Records. Pre-order your copy here.

Across the album, tracks from the band’s earliest days (New Factory, Competition) sit side by side with newer tracks, in a breadth of new styles for the band. "We consciously drew on elements from other genres, like new wave, goth rock, post-hardcore, jazz, jungle and ranchera that have inspired us but which we hadn't incorporated into our music previously”.

Regarding new single Leisure Activities, the band offer the following "Leisure Activities is a response to the tendency of countless modern bands who identify as, or are described as political, when their commentary amounts to little more than mundane descriptions of British life or sneering caricatures of an idle working class entirely of their invention. The fact that these groups seem to have far more hostility towards the apparently ordinary people they describe than the state or economic conditions that created them speaks volumes."

To record the album, the band decamped to the residential Echo Zoo studio in Eastbourne. With five days booked – far longer than the band had ever recorded for in the past – the whole album was tracked within two days with producer Louis Milburn. For the rest of the allotted time, they explored the nooks and crannies of the building and the bounty of unusual instruments lying around to add mystical textures to the bones of the songs.

Italia 90's songs aim to be timeless. Like the painting on the album’s cover, which shows a crowd of people all facing away from the viewer, the idea of the collective takes precedence over the individual. “I care deeply about the things that I’m singing about,” says singer, Les Miserable, “but I don’t think that it needs to be me that is saying it. I have my point of view, and think that the ideology that I’m forwarding in the songs is correct, and very important, but it’s not important that it’s me saying them. If I did, I would already be contradicting the things that I am saying in the songs.”

Across the record, the band step off the relentless, exhausting hamster wheel and create something fantastic with the abundance of ingredients already here, pointing a different way forwards.

Check out the album's tracklist and watch the video for "Leisure Activities", below.

Watch: La Sécurité Premiere New Single/Video "Try Again"

Montreal art punk/post punk supergroup La Sécurité (members of Choses Sauvages, Laurence-Anne, Jesuslesfilles, Silver Dapple, DATES and Pressure Pin) have premiered their new single "Try Again", alongside an accompanying music video.

Cute, yet deadly mushrooms, weird multidimensional plumbing pipes and multicolored flying turtles are just some of the elements that inspired the cryptic post-punk groover “Try Again”. The song is out today, May 31via Mothland, get it here.

While cowbells and woodblocks dance in and out of its unique angular beat, repetitive riffs and catchy synthesizer lines ensure that listeners are hypnotized, ultimately taken into an easter egg-ridden 2D metaphysical labyrinth where psychedelic musical bliss awaits.

Recorded and mixed alongside Samuel Gemme at Gamma Recording Studio (Corridor, Anemone, Population II), this introductory effort from these Montrealers is sure to please fans of Devo, E.S.G., Gang of Four and Le Tigre.

Watch: Rip Room Air Music Video For "Complication"

San Francisco art punk band Rip Room have aired the video for "Complication".

The song is part of our cuurent playlist taken from their debut full-length album 'Alight and Resound', out tomorrow, May 27 through Spartan Records. Pre-order your copy here.

Of the track, vocalist/guitarist John Reed said, “Complication" is about the failure of society to do meaningful things, and the lack of imagination that's doomed humanity to repeat the same mistakes over and over. Why isn't there equitable treatment of all people? Why is there still war? Why can't the richest country in the history of the world provide healthcare for all of its citizens? So many questions with seemingly the same answer from our so-called leaders: it's complicated."

New Entry: Rip Room Release New Single "Dead When It Started"

San Francisco art punk band Rip Room have released their new single "Dead When It Started".

The song is taken from their upcoming debut full-length album 'Alight and Resound', which will be out on May 27 through Spartan Records. Pre-order your copy here.

Speaking about the song, Rip Room’s John Reed (guitar/vocals) shared:

"‘Dead When It Started’ is a good intro to Rip Room for the uninitiated: it's an indictment disguised as a dance song. If the height of human interaction is the sum of our institutions plus the current state of social media, then our ability to solve real problems quickly approaches zero. The system is rigged! And worse, our tools for communication are essentially games that demand our attention and little else (and if it's not clear, I count myself among the implicated here). Contrary to the lyrics, the tune is super fun! It's maybe the most accessible song on the record, which makes the disconnect from the lyrics a bit cheeky. I remember the main riff sort of materialized out of thin air, and aside from the proggy breaks, it's basic pop. That's Gracie [Malley] pounding on a car fender with a hammer before the outro, and there's a ton of the Bass Rhodes on this track which makes it extra beefy.”

Beige Banquet Announce Live LP 'LIVE! LIVE! LIVE!', Stream "'Export/Additive'"

London art punk/post punk band Beige Banquet have announced the release of the live album 'LIVE! LIVE! LIVE!'.

'LIVE! LIVE! LIVE!' is their first full-band recording and captures the high-energy, high-volume live sound that has become a feature of the band’s live output. It will be out on April 29 through Just Step Sideways Records. Pre-order your copy here.

The album features songs from the previous two releases: 'Beta' and 'S/T', in addition to two brand new tracks, and documents the Beige Banquet live set from early 2022, which saw the band play a string of dates around the UK and a tour across northern France. Building on the first two releases, 'LIVE! LIVE! LIVE!' is the first recording that captures the band's expansion into a 5-piece, and exhibits a powerful and dynamic sound that sits apart from the sparse and anxious sensibilities produced in Brierley's DIY bedroom studio. Tracks from 'Beta' and 'S/T' remain the same but 'LIVE! LIVE! LIVE!' includes different arrangements and stylistic additions that showcase each member's musical personality – the subtle interplay between instruments underpins the band's live performance.

New Entry: Rip Room Air New Single "Loose Ends"

San Francisco art punk band Rip Room have aired their new single "Loose Ends".

The song is taken from their upcoming debut full-length album 'Alight and Resound', which will be out on May 27 through Spartan Records. Pre-order your copy here.

Speaking about it, singer-guitarist John Reed said: “Writing during the Trump era, it was hard to resist the urge to write exclusively about what a monster he is. Temptation got the best of me on our song ‘Loose Ends.’ One of the scariest things about that time was getting desensitized to the crazy shit coming out of his mouth day after day … heartless and nonsensical, but calculated. And to what end?”

Rip Room Announce New LP 'Alight and Resound', Stream "Worth Repeating"

San Francisco art punk band Rip Room have announced the release of their debut full-length album 'Alight and Resound'.

Recorded with engineer Tim Green (Nation of Ulysses, Melvins, Bikini Kill, Sebadoh), the 12-track album will be out on May 27 through Spartan Records. Pre-order your copy here.

The record features pulsing songs that harken back to better musical times while somehow embracing the relevance of the moment. Think Unwound, Sleater-Kinney, and Fugazi. Propulsive rhythms and piercing lyrics, but with a sense of buoyancy. Brashness over banality. Wolves in sheep’s clothing.

“I wanted to be in a fun, high-energy band, but with a math-y, prog edge,” says vocalist/guitarist John Reed. “We’re always looking to capture our live sound, and with this record, we wanted that plus a little more to emphasize some ideas or sonic feelings,” adds bassist/vocalist Sarah McKinney. “The subject matter is pretty heavy, but the execution is sometimes a bit more lighthearted and dance-y which I think balances it out well. Our sound was once described as ‘dance music for people who don’t like to dance,’ which I don’t agree with — I’d say it’s ‘dance music for people who like to dance but are also bummed out’.”

Thematically, while instrumentally effervescent, 'Alight and Resound' delves into some more turbulent lyrical waters. Loneliness, chaos, despair, and struggle — yet somehow with a glimmer of hope. “The title of the record is a lyric from the song ‘Get On In The World,’ which is in part about frustration and not really fitting in,” says Reed. “Everyone’s focused or too wrapped up in their own shit and sadly this too often devolves into misunderstandings, at best, and violence, at worst. Alight and Resound is like a plea — move to a different plane of understanding and empathy or else we’re fucked.”

Alight and Resound is a testament to the power of seeking brashness over banality. There is perceptible life and light in the recordings that grow with each listen, and the authenticity of the experience is both palpable and revitalizing.

Check out the album's tracklist and the video for their new single "Worth Repeating", below.

Watch: Gustaf Share New Single/Video "Cruel"

Brooklyn-based art-punk/post-punk quintet Gustaf have shared the video for their new single "Cruel".

The song is taken from their debut studio album 'Audio Drag For Ego Slobs', out today, 1st October via Royal Mountain Records. Grab it here.

Speaking about it, vocalist Lydia Gammill has said: “When I started working out the lyrics for cruel, I liked the idea of someone getting mad at the sunlight for shining through their window. I wanted to play with the idea of someone victimizing themselves over a blessing. Ultimately ‘Cruel’ became a ‘love’ song — or as it goes with a lot of Gustaf songs, an anti-love song.

“The protagonist in ‘Cruel’ is unfairly upset at someone who gave them a glimpse of a good thing and then took it away. Now they’re left obsessing over the thrill of what could have been. They were content with what they already had, but once they knew something more was possible they became indignant over losing it. Selfishly musing that if they knew it would be like this, they would’ve rather not had the thing at all.”

“‘Book’ is a song about the fallacy and fight of getting ahead vs being a head. It is seeking validation in the wrong places and from the wrong people,” singer Lydia Gammil explains. “The hook, “I got ahead, I got a head” is a fun little taunt that we find either being thrown in our face or coming out our mouth. Everyone gets their moment up on the pedestal and everyone gets their turn falling off of it. Whether it’s up or down, ‘Book’ is about accepting whatever level you’re on.”

New Entry: Roxy Girls Reveal New Single "Sister Fatima"

Sunderland post punk/art punk 4-piece Roxy Girls have revealed  their new single "Sister Fatima".

The song,  written in homage to their late dearly beloved Hamster "Fatty",  is taken from their new EP ‘Roxy Girls Are In The Drink’, which will be out on 27th August via Moshi Moshi Records. Get it here.

Influenced in part by albums like XTC’s “Drums and Wires”, the EP sees the band build on their unique and idiosyncratic take on the post-punk format, with crisp polyrhythmic guitar lines that interweave with one another, whilst placing more emphasis on the dynamics led by the drums and bass. It still conveys the same breathless intensity that Roxy Girls have been lauded for in the past, but not at the expense of the band moving towards warmer, more melodically driven songwriting.

Stream it below.

Watch: SPLLIT Unleash New Single/Video "Amite River"

Baton Rouge, Louisiana art punk/experimental band SPLLIT have unleashed the video for their new single "Amite River".

The song is taken from their forthcoming new album '"Spllit Sides', which will be available on July 30 through Feel It Records. Pre-order your copy here.

"Spllit Sides" slowly rises from a cacophony of tape splicing into clear and concrete Next Level Music. Like an acid tableaux vivant ~ a swirling sonic whirlwind of loose and odd time signatures come into play along with the occasional pop sensibility. Originality remains key in Spllit's formula, but let's establish some sonic kinship - maybe a Devolved, Deep South version of The Flying Lizards. Or a deep fried Eno sitting in with The Magic Band.
