WYLDERNESS - Band of the Month March 2018

This month's featured band on Kool Rock Radio is Cardiff-London indie pop/shoegaze band Wylderness.

Their sound is described as "'woozy sun-drenched indie and mesmerising shoegaze, echoing the sounds of Ride, My Bloody Valentine and DIIV."

The band are set to release their self-titled debut album on March 23rd via Succulent Recordings. It was recorded, produced and mixed with acclaimed indie producer Rory Attwell (Test Icicles, Veronica Falls, Telegram, Palma Violets). Pre-order the album here.

Wylderness are highly notable since they already achieved upfront US TV support from stateside sync deals and widespread support from UK national radio for their two singles to date, "72 & Sunny" and "Peripheral Vision", both featured as singles of the week here on Kool Rock Radio, on October 16 and January 8 respectively.

Latest single "Peripheral Vision" is woozy throbbing and mesmerising shoegaze all neatly rolled into one. Speaking of the track, the band said, “‘Peripheral Vision’ is the icier wintry cousin to our first single "72 & Sunny", which we wrote around the same time. We were listening a lot to the latest DIIV album when we made this, so that was a definite influence. The lyrics are about giving yourself some space to enjoy wallowing in a bit of misery, and the idea that it can be a healthy thing to do to make something creative’.

PRISMA - Band of the Month April 2016

This month's BOTM on Kool Rock Radio is Switzerland-based indie rock four-piece PRISMA.

The band's line-up consists of:

There is an element of unpredictability about Prisma. In fact, the band’s beginnings could come straight out of a vintage rock ’n’ roll novel: two Peruvian brothers, an Argentinian and a young Swiss met in Europe, discovered common musical aspirations, formed a group and started producing their own music!

Prisma was founded in 2011, when brothers Paulo and Dennis chose to embrace their musical fate and live their dream of forming a rock group. Together they pooled their rich musical creativity and merged their talents and enthusiasm. From a young age they had developed a philosophy that music should come from people playing instruments. Those natural vibrant sounds contrasted with the synthetic and digital noise that was coming out of computers. Their philosophy was that no machine could ever replace the mystic experience of a live rock ’n’ roll band on stage.

The brothers join forces with Mauro, a talented Argentinian bass player, who shared their musical philosophy as well as their South American roots. Finally after some auditions, none other than Fabian, a Swiss cheeky-cool drummer, completed their line-up.

Last month the band released their self-titled debut album, and their next ambition is to hit the road and make all rock ’n’ roll lovers worldwide dance, scream, sing and shout.

ORPHAN BOY - Band of the Month May 2015

This month's BOTM on Kool Rock Radio is British indie rock/post-council pop four piece ORPHAN BOY.

Comprised by Bobby Cross (Guitars/Vocals), Paul Smith (Bass), Chris Day (Drums) and Sam Carlton (Keyboards), Orphan Boy are a band who've been around for a few years now, they have four performances at Glastonbury under their belts, and they are about to release their third studio album 'Coastal Tones' this month (May 25th) on Concrete Recordings, featuring recent single "Beats Like Distant Tides" and the forthcoming second cut, "From the Provinces".

About the their influences, they have said: "Our first album 'Shop Local' was largely influenced by The Clash and Gang Of Four. Our second album 'Passion, Pain & Loyalty' by The Clash and Pulp. And our third album 'Coastal Tones' is mainly influenced by 'Shop Local' and 'Passion, Pain & Loyalty'."

Offering an unflinching view of life on the fringes, frontman Rob Cross' lyrical inspirations range from the bleak view of a Grimsby tower block to furious ruminations on the neglected realms of Scunthorpe, Doncaster and many other often overlooked Northern pastures. "I’ve always liked the idea of seeing the beauty in the mundane," says Rob, who cites Jarvis Cocker, Irvine Welsh and Charles Bukowski as lyrical touchstones. "People don’t give small towns credit, but places like Morecombe and Kirkcaldy have a real sense of community spirit. Singing about Grimsby and Cleethorpes is all part of that. It’s an undocumented part of the country which is as valid as anywhereelse." 

Coastal Tones was self-produced by band member Sam Orphan and was recorded and mixed at their hometown studios in a warehouse on Grimsby Docks. Pre-order your copy here.

BREATHERS - Band of the Month March 2015

This month's BOTM on Kool Rock Radio is Atlanta, GA based band BREATHERS.

Breathers are a three-piece, comprised by T. Lee Gunselman (Vocals, Synths, E. Drums), Mike Netland (Percussion, Samples) and Jake Thomson (Synths, Vocals, E. Drums), making lush electronic music.

Their influences include synth pop, soul, and music of the 8-bit/16-bit golden era while their sound remains crisp, catchy and fresh.

The band released their excellent debut EP 'Transitions' last month (February 20) through Skeleton Realm Records, which is run by members of Warehouse and the band TV Dinner. Get it here.

LE CLICHÉ - Band of the Month February 2015

This month's BOTM on Kool Rock Radio is Barcelona/New York based minimal synth, synth pop project LE CLICHÉ.

Le Cliché is the project of Gerard Ryan, native of Limerick (Ireland), and pulls influences in all directions from 70's and 80's synthwave (in the vein of Human League, Japan, and Depeche Mode), to Ryan's background as an Associate Professor of marketing and consumer behavior. 

Le Cliché originally started as a synth project in 1984 when Ryan was a teenager, but later the project was put on hiatus in favour of a career in academia. The project was re-ignited in 2012, motivated by the appearance of new music from the 1980s that was being rediscovered and released by a host of relatively small but hugely motivated new record labels including Medical Records, and the like (and groups such as Dark Day, Mathematiques Modernes, Bal Paré, Ceramic Hello, and Experimental Products). 

Using a mix of both analog and virtual technologies, Ryan creates his own distinct sound echoing the postmodern themes of his research which culminated in the 2014 debut full length 'Consumer Behavior', released in December through Medical Records LLC.

Inspired by his doctoral research on consumer frustration when dealing with technology (specifically the internet), Ryan released the album's highly addictive track 'Waiting On the Internet", which was featured as Single Of the Week in January 14th here on kool Rock Radio.

Le Cliché will release a couple of new tracks in spring, on the forthcoming compilation from Cold Beats Records, a Barcelona based label.

LUSTS - Band of the Month January 2015

This month's BOTM on Kool Rock Radio is Leicester alternative, new wave duo LUSTS.

Comprised by brothers Andy and James Stone, they have revealed themselves with their ultra addictive debut single "Temptation".

Mixed by MJ of Hookworms, the track evokes both the classic woozy chorus' and reverb laden guitars of Echo and the Bunnymen and the new wave pop sensibilities of Beach Fossils. 

The band are the first to sign to the recently re-launched band manager and rock'n'roll raconteur James Endeacott's label 1965 Records, and will release the AA-side single "Temptation"/"Cross" via digital download on 12th January and 7” on 2nd March.

MODEL AEROPLANES - Band of the Month July 2014

This month's BOTM on Kool Rock Radio is Dundee Scotland indie pop young four-piece Model Aeroplanes.

Comprised by Rory Fleming-Stewart (vocals, guitar), Grant Irvine (guitar), Ben Buist (bass) and Kieran Smith (drums), the lifelong friends have been playing music from the age of 13 in a variety of bands and formations, racking up experience in the field of songwriting, and shows. Now as Model Aeroplanes, they share a desire to make "fun, fresh and honest music that you can drink cocktails to." 

With fantastic support coming from BBC Radio 1, the guys found themselves on the bill for BBC Introducing at T int the Park last year. 

They have uploaded a handful of promising tracks to their Soundcloud page, such as "Crazy", their official debut single (released in September last year), "Innocent Love" and most recently "Electricity", and are currently recording their debut album.

With a very infectious and contagious guitar pop, they have been compared to bands such as Vampire Weekend, Theme Park and Bombay Bicycle Club, and have influences of disco, new wave and pop music. It's definitely another kool band to keep an eye on.

BLOOM (HOME CLOUDS) - Band of the Month June 2014

This month's BOTM on Kool Rock Radio is Winchester/London based four-piece BLOOM.

UPDATE July 27: The band has changed their named to HOME CLOUDS.

Comprised by Jimmie Westwood (Vocals/ Guitar & Synth), Ashwin Singh (Lead Guitar), Dem Gerolemou (Bass/Guitar), and Will Allen (Drums), they have cited WU LYF, DIIV, Flashguns, Peace, Foals, JAWS, Swim Deep, Splashh, Tame Impala, Yeasayer as some of their major influences.

Their brilliant debut single "Daydream", is a gentle strain of guitar pop, with slices of baggy sounds and a cool summery feeling. It's definitely a band to keep an eye on.

The band are currently working on new material, and have just unveiled their brand new catchy tune "In The Past", a perfect B-side for "Daydream". Buy the single here.

WUNDER WUNDER - Band of the Month May 2014

This month's BOTM on Kool Rock Radio is Australian, LA-based outfit WUNDER WUNDER. 

Wunder Wunder is the creative conception of Melbourne, Australia music producers, Aaron Shanahan and Benjamin Plant. After many years of producing and writing electronic music, the duo have given birth to a new project that adventures into their love of colourful psychedelic '60s and '70s pop.

Having spent the last two years relocated in Los Angeles, an overflow of inspiration left them with a combination of everything from soft, blissed-out dreamscapes to the hot Californian sun burn's that will be felt with their first single 'Coastline'. 

With an amalgamation of lo-fi squelch, dreamy guitars and warping synths, Wunder Wunder is a true aural trip into the west coast sun. Through a kaleidoscope of melodies, they provide the sonic colour and boldness that most music seems to forget.

"Wunder Wunder is a project of positivity, dreaming, exploration and connection. We want people to feel something uplifting from what we do. Whether it's a backdrop for happy memories on a road trip or another nostalgic occasion it'd be great to be part of those moments in people's lives." They say.

HABITATS - Band of the Month April 2014

This month's BOTM on Kool Rock Radio is London indie alternative/tropical groove four-piece HABITATS. 

Based loosely in the heart and soul of London and the Hampshire area, the band consist of Mike Lawford (takes a hip flask wherever he goes, the cheap bastard), James Furniss (climbs trees on a daily basis), Joe Payne (gets distracted by all things shiny) and Adam Saunders (has the beautiful moustache of a '70s porn star). They seem to relish the idea of not having a specific frontman, with each of them providing enough strong characteristics in the music to be able to swap microphones at will in the live arena. 

Since the release of their first bedroom demo in March 2013 they have secured a deal with Rough Trade publishing, as well as gaining interest from international management teams and various hi-falutin’ labels. Better still HABITATS started 2014 with a slot at fierce panda's cruelly beautiful New Year Pandamonium '14 event at the Old Blue Last alongside the likes of Department M and The Death Of Pop. Throw in recent support slots for JAWS, Animal Kingdom and Superfood at a variety of toppermost venues down south and you sense that HABITATS are a band who are itching to break out of their, well, habitat. 

"Diamond Days" is their debut single release, and an exotic, hectically sweet-natured debut. It is available now via Fandango.

GRUDLE BAY - Band of the Month February 2014

This month's BOTM on Kool Rock Radio is Oxford indie-pop/dream-pop four piece GRUDLE BAY. 

Grudle Bay began life in 2003 as a musical project between school friends Nathan Allsworth and Tom Hodges. Using modest instruments, unusual percussion and warped atmospherics to create an unpretentious soundtrack to the world around them, Grudle Bay collaborated with a variety of musicians on a dynamic live set and some truly dreamy recordings. 

In 2011 the duo were joined by Tom Dyson and James Pamphlion. With the conviction that dancing will always be cool, Grudle Bay hope to make your heart beat a little faster, your feet move a little quicker and your smile reach a little higher.

Recently the band revealed the video for their very catchy song "Colder", taken from their excellent 3-track EP of the same name, released last year. Grab your copy here. 

Their infectious music has the right combination of dream-pop atmospherics mixed with the most catchy elements of 80s new wave, think of Lotus Eaters, China Crisis... Do we need to say more?

PATTERNS - Band of the Month December 2013

This month's BOTM on Kool Rock Radio is Manchester dream-pop four piece PATTERNS.

Ciaran McAuley and Laurence Radford are both from London and Alex Hillhouse and Jamie Lynch are from the Wirral. They all met at Manchester University and started making music together.

They came across their fourth member, Alex Hillhouse, when they had a last-minute gig lined up, but no bassist. Luckily, Lynch knew someone who could fill the job. So the next day Hillhouse met the rest of Patterns and learned their entire set. The band explains: "It seemed to work so we kept him and found out he had a mean falsetto to him." Perfect.

Together, they're making evocative noises that are brimming with nostalgia. Recently they've been perfecting their debut album and working on a collaborative project called KOLLIDE. That's given them a chance to work with other Manchester musicians and not be confined by release schedules and record sales.

Ever since releasing their first EP 'New Noise' on indie label Pull Yourself Together they've been getting lots of attention. Once you listen to their music you're hooked.

HOSPITAL - Band of the Month November 2013

This month's BOTM on Kool Rock Radio is Russian indie rock/pop band HOSPITAL.

HOSPITAL are:

The band was formed in autumn 2011. The search for their own sound led to peculiar heterogeneity of the product however regardless of this after extensive work over sound the guys attained attractive and recognizable style.

The first single that included two songs "Time Will Tell" and "Falling" was released in December 2012. Thier debut album 'When The Trees Were Higher' came out on January 20, 2013 and was uploaded on the Internet for free download. The album received positive feedback both in Russian and foreign blogs. The band gave a series of concerts in Russia to support the release of their album.

Tailspin, their most recent release (August 25 via Mimonot), is a fun, refreshing throwback to ’80s new-wave pop. With elements of electronica flare and pleasant male vocals blended with pop synthesizer sounds, Hospital takes the listener back in a fresh way. Get your copy now from their Bandcamp page.

REAL LIES - Band Of The Month October 2013

This month's BOTM on Kool Rock Radio is London bedroom pop trio REAL LIES.

Revealed back in July without further information, this exciting new band caught our attention with their smashing single "Deeper". Sitting somewhere between old rave records and modern electronic pop acts, Real Lies present a sound that would do equally as well in a club as it would on stage at a large festival.

According to the press, Real Lies' music expresses late-night euphoria at the same time as it embraces the horrors of the following afternoon, twinning street bravado with bedroom vulnerability, loss with longing. It is music about burying yourself in an avalanche of words and warm bodies in an endless search for the right ones. We couldn't agree more. 

'World Peace / Deeper' is the first of three double A-sides from the band, and the first ever 12" pressing from London label Sweet Exile. It will be out on November 4.

Both tracks are brilliant and have all the hallmarks of an early 90s anthem, fans of New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Perfume, Flowered Up and Happy Mondays are sure to find plenty pleasurable about these tracks.

SHY NATURE - Band of the Month September 2013

This month's BOTM on Kool Rock Radio is SHY NATURE, one of our favourite new acts. They caught our attention with their excellent debut single "Deadly Sin" and have been since then an exciting band to keep an eye on. They will release their self-titled debut EP on September 16th. 

This North London five-piece formed in late 2012, William (vocals, guitar) and Philip (guitar) met Matthew (drums) after knocking over a fridge at a party in Liverpool. From this initiation grew a friendship which, years later, led to them writing songs about growing up in your twenties. The band was completed by old friend Gary (bass) and new friend Christopher (keyboard). 

Taking the DIY characteristics of a home studio to extremes, they transformed Matthew's flat into a space for writing, rehearsing, recording and filming. Where for 6 months they focussed entirely on developing their songs. Often marrying dark themes with bright instrumentation, their name references the silent observations that inform the music and lyrics. Their debut track "Deadly Sin" was self-released on May 13th 2013 and achieved national and international recognition. 

Following a packed live show at The Old Blue Last just after the release of 'Deadly Sin', the band supported The Breeders 'Last Splash' 20th anniversary performance at a sold-out 2000+ capacity Forum in Kentish Town. 

Opening with the jangly guitars and playful keyboard of lead track "Sinking Ship" (which was featured as Single of the Week here on KRR), the band's self-titled debut EP builds upon the anthemic 'Deadly Sin' and will drive live activities through the Summer, Autumn and beyond, while they ready further material for release in 2014.

Recently, the band unveiled "Washout" (also featured as SOTW) another contagious indie pop anthem from the upcoming EP. Check out the just released music video for the track below.

THE BARBARELLATONES - Band of the Month August 2013

The Barbarellatones are a Glam-Rock band with just a dash of Gothabilly, from the sewers of Hollywood. Sounding like the illegitimate love-child between Bowie and The Cramps.

The Barbarellatones are: Robbie Quine (Vocals, Guitar, Electric Sitar), David Arnson, who is also in 'Insect Surfers' (Lead Surf Guitar), Aniela Perry (Bass, Cello), Roy Staley, who was also in 'Green Jello' (Drums), Sean Cyanide (Fuzz Guitar), Cullen Quine (Cello), Go-Go Bear (Dancer).

The songwriter/guitarist Robbie Quine got a song licensed in 'The Sopranos' and has been in a bunch of surf movies, soft porn and horror films. Getting airplay on KROQ, BBC and Sirius XM radio....and Kool Rock Radio of course!

The Barbarellatones are sleaze-rockers and fun but also write dark ballads that tread waters into Goth and Psychedelic genres. Often with a flavor of B-Movie-ism, The Barbs are campy and some have said they remind them of Rocky Horror and certainly the 70's...kind of retro-fabulous for lack of a better term. With their gothabilly sound and humorous lyrics, they definitely poke fun at themselves and the goth scene.

THE FAME RIOT - Band of the Month July 2013

THE FAME RIOT are an electro-rock/pop glam duo from Tacoma, WA, comprised by brothers Liz Scarlett and Shazam "Tea Time" Watkins. They have come to completely smash the ears and eyes of the planet into an absolute fugue state of mind.

"THE FAME RIOT is not a band; it's a religion. The pair of brothers is at the forefront of a shift in musical style and culture, drawing influence from the last 4 decades of rock, pop, electronica, disco, and everything in-between. You don't have to follow the crowd to the bar...now you can go to THE FAME RIOT."

They caught our attention last year with their single "Limits", which peaked at #36 in our Best Track of 2012 chart. That same year the band released their singles "Heart Stray", "Shelah", "The Finale". This year the band have already shared two singles "Two Tribes" (out now), and the newest "Physical Altercation" accompanied by the band's first official video, which you can watch here.

The duo generate effervescent electro pop and although they've only been playing together for one year, they've already become known for their unhinged live shows and animated stage presence at Northwest stages at The High Dive, The Comet, LoveFest and more. Influenced by the likes of Bowie, The Darkness, and Hot Chip, The Fame Riot is modernizing glam rock while doing their hometown proud.

They have shared the stage with the likes of: Chromeo, Grouplove, Mickey Avalon, DJ Shadow, The Joy Formidable, Wallpaper, Con Bro Chill, Adam LaClave, and many more.

HOOK & THE TWIN - Band of the Month June 2013

Hook & The Twin are a British duo comprised by drummer Marcus Efstratiou and singer/writer/multi-instrumentalist Tom Havelock. Friends since childhood, the pair started playing in bands together from the age of 15, honing their skills as a restless, Kraut-locked rhythm section. The seeds of HOOK & THE TWIN were sown during long late-night sessions in their woodland rehearsal room, when Tom would layer distorted melodies and drones over Marcus' drumming using an array of instruments and effects pedals, creating mantra-like arcs of sound over which they strung their uniquely deformed pop songs. 

They caught our attention back in 2009 with their first single 'Race for the Bone', and then they killed us with their second brilliant single "Bang Bang Cherry", which peaked at #3 in our Best Track of 2009 chart. 2011 saw the band release two new great singles "Tribes" and "We’re So Light". Along the way they've played with Everything Everything, Django Django and Post War Years, and performed at The Great Escape, Secret Garden Party and Offset festivals to name a few - as well as a packed headline show at France's notorious Transmusicales festival.

The duo will release their highly anticipated 10 track debut album 'Never Ever Ever' June 24 through new indie label Dancing Coins. It was written and recorded in various unexpected locations in and around London: a vast empty concrete basement; an abandoned school theatre; and right underneath a nocturnal Nigerian church in full flow on a Peckham industrial estate. 

Produced with Andy Ramsay (Stereolab, Add N to X) and mixed by rising producer Jim Anderson (Cold Specks, The Twilight Sad, 2:54), the album further includes production by Neil Davidge (Massive Attack) on track They’ll Get Your Head.

The record conjures an English alt.pop landscape that is by turns spectral and anthemic – an exhilarating and multi-layered affair. With influences ranging from Can and Harmonia to Talk Talk and Matthew Dear, the album features a vast range of sounds, instruments and voices, as it moves from the woozy house of We’re So Light, through the broad psychedelia of Stone, to Recklessly’s slow pulsing atmospherics. These tracks, along with current new single, the synth-driven That Was A Day, translate the Hook & The Twin sound perfectly: big spacious sounds, impeccable production and amazingly compelling vocals.

CLIMBING BOYS - Band of the Month May 2013

Climbing Boys are a four-piece band based in East London.

Comprised by Tom Salo, Gavin Bowers, Emma Quick and Alex Kociuba, the band formed in late 2012, played their first show at Barfly in November last year and they have just released their debut EP 'Take the Floor'. 

Musically, the band could be describe as post-punk/new wave. Clearly, the early 80s have been reborn in this London group. 

They combine a profound sort of songwriting with a sound reminiscent of early Echo & the Bunnymen (Crocodiles), Joy Division, and David Bowie. Their songs will fit right into those old-school playlists we all like to make. 

The band have are planning some live shows for June so keep a close check for dates and venues in the near future.

Band of the Month July 2011 - RISK RISK

The Risk Risk project started in 2009 when Stefan decided to make a record with limited, but cool analogue hardware. What he was looking for was that original, authentic early 80s sound, and he found out that most of the character of that early records was just in the fact that a lot was handplayed and not programmed in a computer.

"This is 1983" was produced without a computer and large parts were simply played by hand directly on multitrack. Using all-analog sound generators, his voice and a pair of Carrera sunglasses, Risk Risk creates classical synth pop with catchy choruses and hand-played synth lines.

Stefan started doing electronic music in 1988 with just one monophonic analogue synthesizer, a Roland TR 606 drummachine and a 4 track tape recorder. With a big interest in melodic music, he likes synth bands like Gary Numan, The Twins, A Flock of Seagulls, Kraftwerk and Italo Disco music. The music he made before "This is 1983" was never released on any record label. Stefan gave Sebastian from Astro Chicken a rough demo of his songs and he liked it (Sebastian was a colleague from work who has passion for electronic music). From that point, he worked almost a year on the songs until they had a record in their hands.

"Risk Risk has an amazing sound, heavy basslines and minmal beats with dark voices, pure eighties style with strong influences of italo disco and synth. It will remind you of Gary Newman, Ultravox (John Foxx era), Devo, Mi-Sex and Rational Youth. Stefan found the formula that every band looks for: to make a catchy album on first play.
