Album of the Week June 17/13 - Midnight Juggernauts "Uncanny Valley"

Our new Album of the Week is Australian band Midnight Juggernauts brand new album album 'Uncanny Valley', out now in Australia and France (Record Makers).

In robotic engineering and CGI, the Uncanny Valley is a hypothesis coined by legendary roboticist Masahiro Mori in 1970 - he wrote in his work 'Bukimi no Tani Gensh: "I have noticed that, in climbing toward the goal of making robots appear human, our affinity for them increases until we come to a valley, which I call the uncanny valley."

This "uncanny valley" is a phenomena in which human acceptance of robots grows more welcoming, the more human their appearance, until they become too human, in which there's suddenly a precipitous plunge from acceptance to revulsion.

'Uncanny Valley' marks Midnight Juggernauts' third full-length journey into the deep, once again piloting their glittery kosmische musik far into known cosmos and unknown genre. The band began rolling tape between a church nestled in the Loire Valley in the French countryside and various studios in Melbourne and Sydney, the resulting record is another LP that sounds uniquely Midnight Juggernauts. Situated at a self-styled nexus between genre and era, 'Uncanny Valley' is 43 minutes of warm-hearted cold wave, interstellar harmony's, early 1950's house, steeped in the darkness of dusty Giallo soundtracks, audio spomeniks at once futuristic and rustic, a bold musical future envisaged through a soundtrack to a forgotten Eastern Bloc Tarkovsky film, sifting through the ruins of LPs past.

Tracklist:

1. HCL
2. Ballad of the War Machine
3. Memorium
4. Streets of Babylon
5. Sugar and Bullets
6. Master of Gold
7. Systematic
8. Deep Blue Lines

Album of the Week June 10/13: Jagwar Ma 'Howlin'

Our new Album of the Week is Sydney-based duo Jagwar Ma brilliant debut album 'Howlin', out today (June 10) via Marathon Artists.

Comprised by Jono Ma and Gabriel Winterfield,  the duo first met in Australia and embarked on a musical journey having discovered their similar passions within the industry. They combine rock 'n' roll signifiers (electric guitars, psychedelic vocals) with pristine dance-music production.

When we first heard their killer debut single "The Throw", we knew something good was coming...

Recorded in a secluded town in the north of France, with just an 808, a Fender jaguar, a laptop and a pair of vintage Neve console channels, Jagwar Ma's debut album, has a really infectiously hypnotic sound influenced by everything from the sort of psychedelia to 90s rave culture, baggy sounds, the 'Madchester' scene, and impressively focused dance-pop.

From start to finish, and just as we expected, it is a great debut for this Australian duo with trippy effects and psychedelic sounds that will stick in your mind.

Tracklist:

01. What Love
02. Uncertainty
03. The Throw
04. That Loneliness
05. Come Save Me
06. Four
07. Let Her Go
08. Man I Need
09. Exercise
10. Did You Have To
11. Backwards Berlin

HOOK & THE TWIN - Band of the Month June 2013

Hook & The Twin are a British duo comprised by drummer Marcus Efstratiou and singer/writer/multi-instrumentalist Tom Havelock. Friends since childhood, the pair started playing in bands together from the age of 15, honing their skills as a restless, Kraut-locked rhythm section. The seeds of HOOK & THE TWIN were sown during long late-night sessions in their woodland rehearsal room, when Tom would layer distorted melodies and drones over Marcus' drumming using an array of instruments and effects pedals, creating mantra-like arcs of sound over which they strung their uniquely deformed pop songs.

They caught our attention back in 2009 with their first single 'Race for the Bone', and then they killed us with their second brilliant single "Bang Bang Cherry", which peaked at #3 in our Best Track of 2009 chart. 2011 saw the band release two new great singles "Tribes" and "We’re So Light". Along the way they've played with Everything Everything, Django Django and Post War Years, and performed at The Great Escape, Secret Garden Party and Offset festivals to name a few - as well as a packed headline show at France's notorious Transmusicales festival.

The duo will release their highly anticipated 10 track debut album 'Never Ever Ever' June 24 through new indie label Dancing Coins. It was written and recorded in various unexpected locations in and around London: a vast empty concrete basement; an abandoned school theatre; and right underneath a nocturnal Nigerian church in full flow on a Peckham industrial estate.

Produced with Andy Ramsay (Stereolab, Add N to X) and mixed by rising producer Jim Anderson (Cold Specks, The Twilight Sad, 2:54), the album further includes production by Neil Davidge (Massive Attack) on track They’ll Get Your Head.

The record conjures an English alt.pop landscape that is by turns spectral and anthemic – an exhilarating and multi-layered affair. With influences ranging from Can and Harmonia to Talk Talk and Matthew Dear, the album features a vast range of sounds, instruments and voices, as it moves from the woozy house of We’re So Light, through the broad psychedelia of Stone, to Recklessly’s slow pulsing atmospherics. These tracks, along with current new single, the synth-driven That Was A Day, translate the Hook & The Twin sound perfectly: big spacious sounds, impeccable production and amazingly compelling vocals.

Catch the band live at The Old Blue Last, London on 14th June or at the Standon Calling festival in August.

Australian trio Midnight Juggernauts have unveiled a new amazing video for "Memorium", the new single taken from their upcoming new album 'Uncanny Valley', out on July 9 through Siberia and Record Makers. The song is part of our current playlist www.koolrockradio.com.

According to press release, the follow-up to 2010's The Crystal Axis, was inspired by a 1970 hypothesis from roboticist Masahiro Mori's, also called Uncanny Valley, which posed: "I have noticed that, in climbing toward the goal of making robots appear human, our affinity for them increases until we come to a valley, which I call the uncanny valley." Likewise, the press sheet promises "robotic sounds made by human hands."

The video is a visual documentary on the evolution of CGI from 1951 to the present. Watch it below.

Hook & The Twin Announce Debut Album 'Never Ever Ever'

British duo Hook & The Twin have announced they will released their long awaited debut album titled 'Never Ever Ever' on 24th June through Dancing Coins.

Our very good friends Marcus Efstratiou and Tom Havelock, caught our attention back in 2009 with their first single 'Race for the Bone', and then they just killed us with their second brilliant, catchy single "Bang Bang Cherry", which peaked at #3 in our Best Tracks of 2009 chart. 2011 saw the band release two new great singles "Tribes" and "We’re So Light", both -along with Bang Bang Cherry- included on their forthcoming album.

In a recent interview about talking what to expect from the album they said: "10 songs strung over a series of detailed, psych-infused electric atmospheres - some of them pretty stripped back and brutal, some of them layered up into full-on hypnosis sessions. But there always a song at the heart of things. If you give it a full spin through all 10 songs, we hope it’s a big ride."

About the recording process, they explained: "We did a lot of moving round between different people’s studios and houses, harvesting little pieces of sound from instruments we liked. And there were a few odd buildings we managed to get into for a couple of days at a time - like an empty theatre where we recorded a lot of the vocals. Then we took it all to Andy Ramsay’s studio, went wading through the tapes and started trying to tie the thing together."

Their 10-track debut album will be available through all the usual digital outlets, and you now pre-order it on their Bandcamp page and get an advance of the first track 'That Was A Day', which is part of our current playlist www.koolrockradio.com. The  single version of 'That Was A Day' will be released on 10th June.
