Sam words: “Alright is one of the first tracks from the Seventeen Going Under era. It was always a favourite of mine, and somehow didn’t make the record. It’s about growing up and the theme of cheating death.”

Sam words: “Get You Down is one of the more personal tracks on the record and one of the first that I wrote. The whole album is about insecurity and growing up, Get You Down is one of the first songs that looks at how that insecurity tore apart my relationships, and my last relationship in particular."

About the video, Sam says:“Stephen Graham is genuinely one of the best actors this country has ever seen, and such a lovely bloke. I’m fucking so buzzing about it, it’s so beast! I was out of my comfort zone but it was the most amazing experience I’ve ever had. Thanks so much to Phil Barantini (Director) for making this beauty come to life.”

‘Aye’ is a thumping, angry and frustrated sigh at the state of the nation. It observes the battleground of left versus right but widens the lens to discover those party lines have become ever more blurred resulting in online aggravation that lacks nuance. The focus then settles on the disparity between the 1% and everybody else, and whilst ‘everybody else’ hurls insults at each other arguing semantics on social media, the 1% watch the money rolling in. It’s one of the only politically driven songs on Seventeen Going Under, and typically well observed. A purposeful rant about purposeless ranting.
Sam explains: “Aye is about the polarity between the left and the right wing, and how that leaves working class people displaced with a lack of political identity, playing into the hands of the 1%. It’s also a rant about my disdain for the greedy tax dodging billionaires of the world.

Seventeen Going Under finds Sam turning the mirror on himself; his adolescence and the trials and tribulations of growing up. It’s a relatable journey that careers through an often misspent youth, navigating tumultuous relationships with both friends and family, and trying to figure out what comes next and how to get there. North Shields is the ever-present backdrop for these deeply personal vignettes of a young life travelling breathlessly from nought to sixty, hauling on the breaks and zipping back again from where he started. Over the course of the record, these stunning songs chronicle all the cherished memories, tricky encounters, and events that Sam cannot unsee.
It’s the story of a young teen losing not only his innocence, but then finding strength to stagger blindly into adulthood and all that entails.
The title track condenses that narrative into a few minutes of chest-thumping, heart-swelling pride. Seventeen is a classic age that has resonated and inspired songwriters for years, and Seventeen Going Under can be added to that cannon. It's an emphatic, soaring guitar song that collates the struggles of unemployed life, but also the daftness of age where you otherwise have little to fear and the world at your feet. It's an explosive return.
Sam Fender: "This album is a coming of age story. It's about growing up. It's a celebration of life after hardship, and it's a celebration of surviving."

Sam's words: "This is one of the oldest songs I have, it didn’t make the album. I’ve played it for 5 years and wrote it when I was a baby. It’s always been a fan favourite at shows."
The video was directed by Jack Whitefield, who Explains: "The film was shot entirely on 16mm and 8mm film stock then edited partially by hand using a 1979 Steenbeck editing table. This allowed me to choose specific scenes, remove them from the reel of film and deface them with scratches, tape, holes, and create hand made transitions between scenes.”

Newcastle indie rock musician Sam Fender has premiered his new single "Hypersonic Missiles".
Sam Fender explains: "This song started out when I saw the term ‘Hypersonic Missiles’ in a newspaper. It’s a newly developed Russian missile that travels at something like nine times the speed of sound, which is essentially unstoppable. America currently has no defence against such a weapon, they would be helpless in the wake of an attack, as you have roughly six minutes from the time it is launched to the time it strikes."
"In many ways, 'Hypersonic Missiles' is an unorthodox love song. It’s main focus is on the world around the narrator, who is a complete tin foil hatter. They are convinced the world is on its last legs; they know that it is rife with injustice but feel completely helpless and lacking the necessary intelligence to change it while remaining hopelessly addicted to the fruits of consumerism."
"Amongst all the chaos is love and celebration, there is this glimmer of hope that runs through the song, a little notion that no matter what happens, these two people are gonna have a fucking good time regardless of the tyrants that run their world, and regardless of the imminent doom from these ‘Hypersonic Missiles’."

Newcastle indie rock musician Sam Fender has unveiled the video for "Play God".
The song came out independently in 2017 and has now been re-release trough his new US label home, Interscope. Get your copy here.
“Play God is set in an alternate dystopian reality that shares similarities with our own world,” explained Fender. I wrote it a couple of years ago where there were a lot of big changes happening in both the UK and the States, I had just entered my twenties, I was anxious about the future of the world and its leaders, and it didn’t help that I’d just read George Orwell’s 1984 at the time. As you can imagine, I was pretty paranoid!”
