New Order Confirm New Album Will Be Released This Year

Manchester legends New Order have confirmed that they will release their 10th studio LP this year via Mute Records.

This will be the band's first album since the departure of founding bassist Peter Hook in 2007 and the return of keyboardist Gillian Gilbert, who last appeared on 2001's 'Get Ready.'

The band have revealed that they've already recorded two songs for their upcoming LP, "Plastic" and "Restless," the first of which they debuted live last year and the latter will feature the Chemical Brothers’ Tom Rowlands.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, drummer Stephen Morris, said the record also makes full use of readily available technology, including modern drum and synth programming. These elements have shaped what the band is already describing as a “heavy electronic sound with melodic guitars and an orchestral feel.”

Frontman Bernard Sumner spoke about some of the bands that have influenced New Order and the bands they have influenced in return.

"I don’t think you can say that anyone is doing what New Order does but musicians are all influenced by their record collections. Our earliest influences were Bowie and Iggy Pop and Kraftwerk and songwriters like Neil Young before that. Instead of changing things in a negative way, [the bands influenced by New Order] are giving it new life."

"Some people may say that electronic music is cold and unromantic," Sumner added, referencing their hit "Blue Monday" as a example of how a song can be both robotic and emphatic. "That's true in a way, but now a computer is able to translate exactly what your brain is thinking. That's exciting. It's what we were trying to achieve in the 1980s."

New Order Sign To Mute Records For New Album

Manchester legends New Order have announced they have signed a worldwide deal with Mute Records to release their 10th studio album.

"New Order are delighted to be signing to Mute," the band said in a press release. "We couldn't imagine a better place to be than working with Daniel Miller and his team. Mute has a superb roster of artists and a history that complements our own. In many ways joining the label feels like we are coming home, returning to our independent roots."

Mute's head Daniel Miller commented: "This is an exciting new chapter for both Mute and New Order and I feel privileged to be working with artists with such a long, creative and successful history. When the possibility of us working together first came up, I was invited to hear some of the new material and immediately had no doubts whatsoever that Mute would be the right home for New Order. We've already had a number of creative conversations, and I am looking towards an exciting future."

According to Sumner, the band's new record will see them tilt the emphasis back in favour of the dancefloor: “We made a conscious decision with this next set of material for it to be more synth and dance-based. More dance orientated and keyboard orientated. We’re pretty excited about that.”

New Order's Bernard Sumner Reveals Details Of Autobiography

New Order singer Bernard Sumner has revealed details of his autobiography.

Titled 'Chapter And Verse (New Order, Joy Division And Me)', the book will be published by Transworld on September 25.

According to the press release, Sumner's first book "includes a vivid and illuminating account of Bernard’s Salford childhood, the early days of Joy Division, the band’s enormous critical and popular success, and the subsequent tragic death of Ian Curtis. Bernard describes the formation of New Order, takes us behind the scenes at the birth of classics such as 'Blue Monday' and gives his first-hand account of the ecstasy and the agony of the Haçienda days."

"Sometimes moving, often hilarious and occasionally completely out of control, this is a tale populated by some of the most colourful and creative characters in music history, such as Ian Curtis, Tony Wilson, Rob Gretton and Martin Hannett. Others have told parts of the story, in film and book form. Now, for the first time, Bernard Sumner gives you chapter and verse."

In related news, New Order have recently previewed a new song, tentatively titled "Plastic", listen to it here.

New Order's Bernard Sumner To Publish Autobiography Next Year

Bernard Sumner will release his autobiography in 2014 telling stories of Joy Division and New Order.

According to The Bookseller, Sumner has signed a deal with Transworld to publish the as-yet-untitled book, which promises to "explore Sumner's formation of Joy Division alongside Ian Curtis, his relationship with bandmate Peter Hook, and the inspiration for ‘Blue Monday,’ the biggest selling 12-inch single of all time."

Sumner told the publication:

"Joy Division and New Order have both left quite a legacy but up until now I've been happy to let the music speak for itself. Somehow it feels like the right time to give my personal perspective both on my own life story and the many bands I've been in."

In related news, ex-bandmate Peter Hook's book Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division was published last year and he's planning a follow-up on New Order.
