Manic Street Preachers Unveil Previously Unheard Song 'Studies In Paralysis'

Welsh rock trio Manic Street Preachers have unveiled a previously unreleased track called "Studies In Paralysis". 

The song is taken from the reimagined version of their 6th album ‘Know Your Enemy’, which will be released on September 9 via Columbia/Sony. Grab your copy here.

'Studies in Paralysis' was recorded at Miloco Studios in London but left off the original 2001 release. It has remained unearthed until now and is available on the entirely remixed and reconstructed

The song, which Nicky Wire incorrectly remembered as being released as a b-side to one of the album's four singles, is a red raw rock'n'roll song with a none-more-classic Manics title celebrating the blankness and inertia that comes with the loss of belief. 

The video for 'Studies In Paralysis' was directed by Kieran Evans, he explains how it came about:

 

"It started with an email from Wire (it always does!).  Would I be up for working on visualising two unheard tracks from the 'Know Your Enemy' sessions that were to feature in the beautifully expanded and reworked re-issue of the album?  Of course I would!  Both 'Rosebud' and 'Studies In Paralysis' landed an hour later and were stunning and took my breath away. Fuck me...They left these off the original album...what were they thinking???!!!

 

An hour later, another email landed from him - "I'll send some DV footage of the Miloco sessions up to you". But this footage was very different from previous recording sessions he'd filmed. There was a seriousness to everyone's behaviour and recording performances. There was no frivolity or funny off camera 'moments'. The atmosphere felt intense, you could feel the pressure they were under.

 

Cutting this footage to 'Studies in Paralysis' was a task. I went through many iterations and edits to get the right "feel" to reflect what is a truly glorious song... Thankfully...I think we definitely got there in the end".

Manic Street Preachers Unveil Unreleased Track "Rosebud"

Welsh rock trio Manic Street Preachers have unveiled a previously unreleased track called "Rosebud". 

The song is taken from the reimagined version of their 6th album ‘Know Your Enemy’, which will be released on September 9 via Columbia/Sony. Grab your copy here.

The new version of the album has been entirely remixed and reconstructed to form two separate albums as originally planned. ‘Know Your Enemy’ will be available digitally and as a 3 CD bookset, double CD and double album.

This deluxe release includes two previously unheard ‘forgotten’ tracks: ‘Studies in Paralysis’ and ‘Rosebud’, which is available online today. Beginning all wiry and cracked, ‘Rosebud’ soon opens out into a stuttering Hammond organ riff, a pensive rhythm track and a lyric that regrets “most things I never finished”.

Manic Street Preachers Share 'Sleep Next To Plastic' A Career Spanning Playlist

Welsh rock trio Manic Street Preachers have shared 'Sleep Next To Plastic', a career spanning Playlist featuring new & lost recordings

This is the second in a series of career spanning Spotify playlists specially curated by the band. Sleep Next To Plastic focuses on the cover versions Manic Street Preachers have performed over the years. It includes new/lost recordings, B-sides and album tracks. Fifteen of the covers have previously been unavailable officially through streaming services; the version of Madonna’s Borderline was recorded in the band’s Door To The River especially for this playlist. 

 

Covers have away been central to Manic Street Preachers ethos, whether playing raw versions of Happy Mondays or Clash songs at early gigs or adding inspirational classics written by Guns N’Roses or Echo and the Bunnymen to recent live shows. 

Manic Street Preachers Air Music Video For "Complicated Illusions"

Welsh rock trio Manic Street Preachers have aired the video for their newest single "Complicated Illusions". 

The song is part of our current playlist and is taken from their 14th studio album 'The Ultra Vivid Lament', which came out last month (3rd September) via Columbia/Sony. Grab your copy here.

Complicated Illusions is described by the band as “The battle between chaos and calm with a gliding majestic lyrical flow – leaning towards’ More Than This’ era-Roxy - Bowie’s Lodger - peak pop Echo & the Bunnymen.”

Film maker Kieran described the footage to compliment the song - “I’ve always felt the track feels like an epic soundtrack to an as yet made film so I’ve gone for a visual/lyric type affair using a similar aesthetic / approach to a lot of Netflix type title sequences using minimal / small type over multi-layered imagery.”

The video for the single stars Newport born actress Aimee Ffion Edwards (Peaky Blinders/The Detectorists/Skins) and was directed by the band’s long-time visual collaborator Kieran Evans in Tenby and Newport’s Dolman Theatre.

Manic Street Preachers Reveal Music Video For "Orwellian"

Welsh rock trio Manic Street Preachers have revealed the video for their latest single "Orwellian".

Manic Street Preachers on 'Orwellian': “The track is about the battle to claim meaning, the erasing of context within debate, the overriding sense of factional conflict driven by digital platforms leading to a perpetual state of culture war. As with many songs on the record, it was written on the piano by James Dean Bradfield. Musically, it echoes ABBA, the majesty of Alan Rankine’s playing in the Associates and Talk Talk’s ‘It’s My Life’ with a Lindsey Buckingham guitar solo. It felt like the perfect sonic and lyrical introduction to The Ultra Vivid Lament”.

Manic Street Preachers Announce New LP 'The Ultra Vivid Lament', Stream "Orwellian"

Welsh rock trio Manic Street Preachers have announced the release of their 14th studio album 'The Ultra Vivid Lament'.

The follow-up to 2017's Resistance Is Futile, will be released on 3rd September via Columbia/Sony, and was recorded during the winter in Wales at Rockfield studios in Monmouth and the band's own Door To The River studio in Newport with longtime collaborator Dave Eringa. Pre-order your copy here.

‘The Ultra Vivid Lament’ is both reflection and reaction; a record that gazes in isolation across a cluttered room, fogged by often painful memories, to focus on an open window framing a gleaming vista of land melting into sea and endless sky.

The eleven tracks perfectly marry introspection, quiet rage and sublime, irresistible tunes. Those elements are there throughout, from the opening ambient hum of ‘Snowing In Sapporo’ to the galloping ‘The Secret He Had Missed’s push-and-pull duet imagining dialogue between Welsh brother and sister artists Augustus and Gwen John; via ‘Diapause’s sublime contemplation and ‘Happy Bored Alone’s stoic wishful thinking.

Musically, ‘The Ultra Vivid Lament’ is inspired by a formative years record box (ABBA, post-Eno Roxy, the Bunnymen, Fables-era REM, Lodger) though the end result could only be the unique union of James Dean Bradfield, Nicky Wire and Sean Moore, collectively one of the UK’s most consistently brilliant rock’n’roll bands for over three decades.

The band have also shared the album's lead single "Orwellian", speaking about it the band said: "The track is about the battle to claim meaning, the erasing of context within debate, the overriding sense of factional conflict driven by digital platforms leading to a perpetual state of culture war."

Watch: Manic Street Preachers Release "Liverpool Revisited" Lyric Video

Welsh rock/alternative trio Manic Street Preachers have released the video for their new single "Liverpool Revisited", a tribute track for Hillsborough disaster ahead of 29th anniversary.

The song is taken from their forthcoming 13th  album 'Resistance Is Futile', set to arrive on 6th April 2018 via Columbia/Sony. Pre-order your copy here.

On April 15 1989, a human crush occurred at Hillsborough football stadium in Sheffield, during the 1989 FA Cup semi-final between Nottingham Forrest and Liverpool. 96 attendees were killed, and 766 were injured, making it the worst disaster in the history of British sports.

About hte track, frontman James Dean Bradfield said "It’s about the ‘Justice For The Victims Of Hillsborough’ campaign. That campaign fought the entire British establishment to get to the truth, and they finally got there with their ruling.

“When the ruling came out of the High Court, we were just about to do a gig at the Liverpool Echo Arena, and Nick (Wire, bass guitarist) had a day down on the waterfront where he just took loads of Polaroids and wrote loads of poetry, as he does. Nick wrote this song in its entirety. [...] When he gets into the flow of doing a song on his own, it does just flow."

Manic Street Preachers Announce New LP 'Resistance Is Futile', Watch a Trailer

Welsh rock trio Manic Street Preachers have announced the release of their 13th studio album titled 'Resistance Is Futile'.

The follow-up to 2014's acclaimed LP Futurology, was recorded at the band’s new recording studios in Newport, and will be released on 6th April 2018 via Columbia/Sony.

A statement by the band reads: "The main themes of 'Resistance is Futile' are memory and loss; forgotten history; confused reality and art as a hiding place and inspiration.

"It's obsessively melodic - in many ways referencing both the naive energy of 'Generation Terrorists' and the orchestral sweep of 'Everything Must Go'. After delay and difficulties getting started, the record has come together really quickly over the last few months through a surge of creativity and some old school hard work."

Manic Street Preachers Reveal New Album Details, Air "Walk Me to the Bridge" Video

Welsh three-piece Manic Street Preachers have revealed full details for their forthcoming album 'Futurology'.

The band's twelfth studio album will be released on July 7, and according to the press release, 'Futurology' is "furious, propulsive and expansive, is the sound of the Manics at their very best - a record inspired by permanent revolution, modern art and Autobahns."

Welsh three-piece Manic Street Preachers have shared the video for "Manorbier", another cut taken from their twelfth studio album 'Rewind The Film', which was released in September. Get your copy here.

‘Manorbier’is a cinematic instrumental about the Norman castle in West Wales where Virginia Woolf and George Bernard Shaw used to write, was James’s attempt to “splash love on the canvas” with the aid of a leviathan theremin riff. It offers a way out, because with the Manics there is always a way out, and it leads to ‘30 Year War’, a powerhouse history lesson about the crushing of the working class and the baleful return of “old Etonian scum”. Watch: Manic Street Preachers New Video For "Anthem for a Lost Cause"

Welsh three-piece Manic Street Preachers have shared the video for "Anthem for a Lost Cause", the second single taken from their recently released eleventh studio album 'Rewind The Film'.

"Anthem for a Lost Cause" will be part of the band's forthcoming 4-track EP, released on November 25 via Columbia Records. The EP will feature two new songs: 'Death Of A Digital Cause' and 'See It Like Sutherland' and a live version of 'She Is Suffering' recorded at the band's National Treasures one-off London live show at the O2 in 2011.

The clip was directed by Kieran Evans and stars Welsh actress Tori Lyons, who had previously appeared opposite Craig Roberts (Submarine, Skins) in the clip for "Show Me The Wonder".

"The video for 'Anthem for a Lost Cause' is heroic, emotional and defiant; a timely reminder of the power of support women gave their communities. And it looks beautiful too." Said bassist and lyricist Nicky Wire.

Welsh three-piece Manic Street Preachers have unveiled the video for "Rewind The Film" (featuring Richard Howley), the title track for their twelfth studio album. 

The album is described as "a more reflective, stripped-back sound whilst maintaining the classic Manics melody and unique lyricism."
