Watch: Gustaf Share New Single/Video "Cruel"

Brooklyn-based art-punk/post-punk quintet Gustaf have shared the video for their new single "Cruel".

The song is taken from their debut studio album 'Audio Drag For Ego Slobs', out today, 1st October via Royal Mountain Records. Grab it here.

Speaking about it, vocalist Lydia Gammill has said: “When I started working out the lyrics for cruel, I liked the idea of someone getting mad at the sunlight for shining through their window. I wanted to play with the idea of someone victimizing themselves over a blessing. Ultimately ‘Cruel’ became a ‘love’ song — or as it goes with a lot of Gustaf songs, an anti-love song.

“The protagonist in ‘Cruel’ is unfairly upset at someone who gave them a glimpse of a good thing and then took it away. Now they’re left obsessing over the thrill of what could have been. They were content with what they already had, but once they knew something more was possible they became indignant over losing it. Selfishly musing that if they knew it would be like this, they would’ve rather not had the thing at all.”

Gustaf Announce Debut LP 'Audio Drag For Ego Slobs', Stream "Book"

Brooklyn-based art-punk/post-punk quintet Gustaf have announced the release of their debut studio album 'Audio Drag For Ego Slobs'.

The album was co-produced by singer Lydia Gammill co-produced and Carlos Hernandez (Ava Luna, Mr Twin Sister), and will be released on 1st October via Royal Mountain Records, featuring their new single "Book". Pre-order it here.

“‘Book’ is a song about the fallacy and fight of getting ahead vs being a head. It is seeking validation in the wrong places and from the wrong people,” singer Lydia Gammil explains. “The hook, “I got ahead, I got a head” is a fun little taunt that we find either being thrown in our face or coming out our mouth. Everyone gets their moment up on the pedestal and everyone gets their turn falling off of it. Whether it’s up or down, ‘Book’ is about accepting whatever level you’re on.”

Watch: Gustaf Release New Single/Video "Mine"

Brooklyn-based art-punk/post-punk quintet Gustaf have released their new single "Mine", and its accompanied video.

The 7" single b/w Design  will be out on December 4th via Royal Mountain Records (US Girls, METZ, Mac DeMarco, Wild Pink), it was produced by Chris Coady (Beach House, Future Islands, TV On The Radio), and it’s a fantastically off-kilter post-punk track that really tows that line of art-rock. Get it here.

UPDATE:12/10/2020: "Mine" is our new Single of the Week!

Vocalist Lydia Gammill explains: "This song is about having a false sense of entitlement. Someone who feels attacked or like they’re being pushed out of their own world and not getting the credit they deserve. Someone with a delusional sense of self whose anger and frustration is humorous like the superintendent in a college frat movie. The opening lines make it seem like the narrator is being criticizing by someone else and they’re retaliation is like "you’ve got to be kidding me, you can’t say that about me! I invented water you punk!" …. sort of. "
