Vancouver, BC indie pop band The Zolas have unleashed the video for their newest single "Yung Dicaprio".
The song is taken from their forthcoming new album 'Come Back to Life', due out July 16 via through Light Organ Records. Buy it here.
Speaking about it, the band said: "We got really into 1996's Romeo + Juliet for this one. Yung Dicaprio is about 2 people from opposite ends of the same sick world who find the antidote in one another."
Vancouver, BC indie rock/pop band The Zolas have announced the release of their new album 'Come Back to Life'.
Due out July 16 via through Light Organ Records, the album was written and recorded in BC, and is fuelled by 90s-era British rock / pop vibes, and infused with stories that touch on the personal to political.
Come Back to Life is a testament to their creative output and drive for a fresh, forward-facing sound. With Come Back to Life The Zolas prove with that you can take a step back to move forward. Several years since the release of 2016’s radio-smashing, Juno-nominated breakthrough Swooner, the group was ready to start a new cycle and a new direction. The groups Zach Gray had just finished a long period of writing music for other people (including “L.A. Hallucinations” from Carly Rae Jepsen’s critically acclaimed album Emotion) and a co-writing trip in Europe with artists such as Starsailor’s James Walsh. Ready to get back to his bandmates he shares “in our jam space we started fucking around with this nostalgic vibe: like a warped memory of the Britpop music we obsessed over as kids but never got to make. Eventually it seemed obvious we had to follow that feeling and make an album of it. It was a spiritual thing to be in a dank room playing loud with our band again.” The end result is The Zola’s homage to Brit-pop.
Newly released single “Yung Dicaprio” is an ode to 1966’s Romeo + Juliet. In a statement regarding the single, Zolas frontman Zach Gray said:
Got obsessed with the Romeo + Juliet movie from 1996 and it coloured a lot of the new stuff we’ve been putting out. This track is about two people from opposite ends of the same sick world who find the antidote in one another. It reminded me of how new love and new music can save your life. That’s how Romeo + Juliet’s soundtrack made me feel, and that’s how you’re meant to feel listening to this. Nobody’s as cute as ’96 Leo but we all deserve to feel like it.

From the band: "Wreck Beach is the sunset spot beside my university, the University of British Columbia, and Totem Park is the name of the student residence my friends and I partied at in undergrad."
"Wreck Beach/Totem Park" is about living my whole life beside the Musqueam reserve, never being taught nor thinking to ask why they live quietly in a small corner of a land that used to be all theirs. In the last five to ten years, like most people, I started hearing a lot of voices about our country's history from an Indigenous point of view.
The clear unfairness of it all really pulled back the curtain on the glossed-over, white-lie version we were given in Grade 10 social studies class."
