SPRINTS Air New Single/Video "Literary Mind"

Dublin-based post-punk/garage band SPRINTS have aired the video for their brand new single "Literary Mind".

The song is out today (Aug 31) and follows-on from the ‘Modern Job’ EP which came out in March via Nice Swan Records. Grab it here

With Literary Mind, Sprints share another slice of cathartic, melodic and punchy punk-rock, produced by Daniel Fox of Gilla Band. The single bookends a busy summer for the band, which included supporting Liam Gallagher in Belfast and a massively popular Glastonbury set. The new run of dates follows two sold-out UK tours. The accompanying video is a feel-good romantic odyssey culminating in the band crashing proceedings with typical exuberance. 

On the new single, Karla Chubb offers the following "Literary Mind is probably one of our most light-hearted songs in Sprints in terms of subject matter, while still exploring something quite close to heart. It's a real deep dive and exploration into the feeling of falling in love, particularly queer love, in which you feel like you've been conditioned to believe a heteronormative way of life is the only "right" way to live, which leads to incredible difficulty and emotional oppression. 

You push these feelings down, ignoring them, praying them away even but eventually with acceptance comes a rush of emotion that you never thought you'd feel. You unlock, finally, what it means to be happy and with it comes the rollercoaster of emotions, hot sweats, fever dreams, happiness, giddiness and excitement that we've tried to capture in the energy and pace of the song."

New Entry: SPRINTS Unleash New Single "Little Fix"

Dublin-based post-punk/garage band SPRINTS have unleashed their new single "Little Fix".

On the new single, singer Karla Chubb says: "Plagued by insecurities, imposter syndrome and gender stereotypes, Little Fix is the culmination of all my fears - the, sometimes, self applied pressure that as a woman in music I can’t just be good, I have to be great. 

I feel like I am in a constant state of proving myself. That no matter what I achieve, learn, write, play or sing, there will always be a critic, a voice in the crowd or in my head telling me that it’s still not good enough, that there’s a million men out there who are better and I’ll always just be “good for a girl”.  

 

Little Fix is a song that instead of running away from that fear, shit talk and criticism, it runs head first at 100 miles an hour into it. Pulling influence from Thee Oh Sees and Courtney Barnett, it’s lyrically the song I am most proud of and one that on tour proved a serious fan favourite"

On the new single, singer Karla Chubb says: “Modern Job is a critique of modern existence but also an exploration of growing up queer. In your formative years, you are bombarded with media, books, news that depict what a “normal” life should be. Grow up, fall in love, get married… long live the nuclear family.

By contrast when you grow up queer all these ordinary things can seem extraordinary, out of reach and in some parts of the world, illegal. It leaves you feeling lost, excluded and confused. I wanted Modern Job to capture those feelings; chaotic energy, loneliness and longing of normality while trying to find acceptance within yourself.”

The video shows the band at their most blistering and visceral, lampooning traditional values with their unique blend of cathartic energy. Watch it below.

Lyrically, Modern Job finds singer Karla Chubb at her sardonic and angry best, detailing her own personal wish-list “I wish I had the guts/I wish I had the gall/ I wish I had a girl” – all set to cascading guitars and a formidable rhythm section; working in unison to create unrelenting tension, all the while echoing the subject matter Chubb explores in her lyrics.

Speaking about it, songwriter Karla Chubb says: “’Drones’ is very literally about my struggles with imposter syndrome. I think being a female in music, I struggle a lot with feeling like I have something to prove. It’s not okay for me to just be good, I have to be great. I have to prove constantly why I am deserving to be on the stage, or holding that guitar or that microphone. That pressure can be very difficult to deal with, and I think a lot of the times you doubt yourself then, am I actually able to write? Or is this all shit? ‘Drones’ is about my experiences with dealing with this pressure, but realising that a lot of people have these struggles. The bars fill, the car parks fill, life seems to go on and on, and we can become so focused internally on our issues that you don’t realise that maybe while I was wishing I was someone else, they’re also wishing the same thing.”

The band combine guitar-driven hooks, motoric rhythm and emotive lyricism to create a unique sound that pulls from garage, grunge, punk and beyond.
