Watch: Wet Leg Premiere New Single/Video "Ur Mum"

Isle of Wight post punk/alt duo Wet Leg (Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers) have premiered the video for their new single “Ur Mum”.

The song is taken from their forthcoming self-titled debut album, out this Friday, April 8 through Domino Records. Pre-order your copy here.

Teasdale says this new track, something swirling in a casual storm of indie-pop and post-punk, is inspired by an ex-boyfriend. “I was pretty angry at the way things had gone in this particular dynamic,” she says. “It’s just a diss song I wrote to make myself feel better. It worked.” It also includes a primal scream unleashed by Teasdale — her “longest and loudest scream” — that clocks in at an impressive 11.2 seconds.

The video was directed by Lava La Rue who said: “The ‘Ur Mum’ video was all about bringing the viewer into the Wet Leg world — sprinkling details throughout the visual that not only reference at least four songs off the album but also plenty of inside jokes within the band, too. Artistically it shows where the aesthetic of American indie films like Napoleon Dynamite fit perfectly in the scape of rural British settings — this concept first came to me when the band took me to IOW for the first time — I saw the connection and it all clicked into place.”

Wet Leg Announce Self-Titled Debut LP, Stream "Too Late Now"

Isle of Wight post punk/alt duo Wet Leg (Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers) have announced the release of their self-titled debut album.

The album, was recorded in London in April 2021 with Speedy Wunderground’s Dan Carey, who produced 10 of its 12 tracks, and will be out on April 2, 2022 through Domino Records, featuring their new singles "Too Late Now" and “Oh No”. Pre-order your copy here.

Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers make “sad music for party people, and party music for sad people,” as a press release puts it. “Wet Leg was originally just supposed to be funny,” says Teasdale. “As a woman, there’s so much put on you, in that your only value is how pretty or cool you look. But we want to be goofy and a little bit rude. We want to write songs that people can dance to. And we want to people to have a good time, even if that might not possible all of the time.”

Teasdale says “Too Late Now” is “about sleepwalking into adulthood,” explaining:
I never imagined that my adult life would look the way it does and I guess this song reflects on some of the pressures and pulls of life. Sometimes I get really inside my head and everything can feel very overwhelming. I think this song is about accepting that life can feel a bit shit from time to time. Maybe don’t indulge that thought too much, though. Just take some time for yourself. Take a breath. Have a bath. It might make you feel a bit better.

Of “Oh No,” she simply asks, “You know when you’re having dinner with someone, and they check their phone, and just … go?”

Teasdale and Chambers had finished their album before they had even played a show, let alone witnessed the adulation around their debut single.
