Nation of Language Unveil New Single "From The Hill"

Brooklyn post punk/new wave/synth-pop outfit Nation Of Language have unveiled their new single "From The Hill", alongside an accompanying music video.

The song is out now and is the trio's first new music since 2021's album 'A Way Forward'. Get it here.

Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Ian Devaney said in a statement: “From the Hill” is a song reflecting on times when friendships fall apart over romantic entanglement, accompanied by the sensation that you’re somehow watching it happen from above with a more zoomed-out perspective. It can feel at times like certain parts of life are a story with which you’re just following along—the characters enter, they play their role, and then they leave. Often it’ll feel sudden and catch you off guard, and other times you’re able to see that it’s the only way things could have played out despite what you may have wanted. For us, we’re in a moment right now where it feels good to get this out into the world. It’s one that didn't really feel like it fit the vibe of A Way Forward, nor is it any real indication of where the next record is likely heading. When that situation arrives we like to use these 7" releases to step outside the larger framework that the albums provide and just release a track that we love, so this is us doing that once again.

In the swirling, arpeggiated depths of “Sliver” – a song so elusive they’ve been trying to record it since 2015 – a shredded, shrouded guitar solo curls into the clouds and slowly decays, framing a couplet that hints at the group’s enduring, elemental presence: “there’s no coming back / as if mountains could move / lay me on broken glass / next to a picture of you.”

Cold Showers Announce New EP 'Strength In Numbers', Stream "How Do You Know This Love"

Los Angeles based post-punk/no-wave/electro band Cold Showers have announced the release of their new EP titled 'Strength In Numbers'. 

The 5-track Ep will be out on June 10 through Dais Records, and follows-on from their 2019 album Motionless. Pre-order it here.

In October of 2020, exhausted by isolation, Cold Showers singer Jonathan Weil proposed the band pack their cars full of gear, rent a house in the desert wilderness of Joshua Tree, and to record a new EP. The result, Strength In Numbers, captures the group’s chemistry at its most effortless and anthemic, distilling a decade of experience into five future classics of romantic Madchester melancholia. Guitarist Chris King credits the freedom of escaping the city and its distractions for the collection’s looser, liberated mood: “The world seemed so bleak that making something lighter felt right.” Once a makeshift studio was assembled, they took turns throwing riffs, ideas, and “half-dead demos” into the ring, democratically workshopping them in the spirit of the band’s egoless mantra: “Best idea wins.”

Speaking about the song songwriter/vocalist Ian Devaney says: “In some ways “The Grey Commute” is one of the more upbeat songs of the record, but in truth it’s one that was born out of much more depressing stuff. As I was working on the lyrics I had a kind of fixation on terrible tax policies, our cultural addiction to meaningless consumption, and it all got swept together into this punchy, kind of fun track.

“To give a sense of time: the Republican tax plan, under which we’re currently living, was just being passed and it was pretty clear just how mind-bindingly stupid it was. Such deep cuts to the taxes of the hyper-wealthy and corporations were both shocking and not shocking at all, and it was difficult to comprehend that anyone thought it wouldn’t lead to the exacerbation of the inequality and instability that defines our time. But here we are. You can see everything I felt then pretty clearly represented on the page when absent any backbeat and melody, but the rant gets dressed up a bit with some bounciness on the final cut to help serve as a bit of a Trojan horse to hopefully get the sentiment across. 

The video’s overt absurdity serves a similar purpose in trying to compliment the absurdity of the subject matter.”

Speaking about the song songwriter/vocalist Ian Devaney says: “I was thinking a lot about simple social gestures and how randomly important they can be in key moments. How empowering it can feel when someone remembers your name; how slighted you can feel when someone you only kind-of know passes by without acknowledgment.

“The song is a kind of vignette on someone who desperately wants to be the one that makes everyone feel good and has in turn neglected themself. Trying as hard as they can to be there for people who are barely in their lives, hoping that this will bring meaning and fulfilment, when it really just ends up leaving them emotionally spent and scattered.

“When writing the song, I kept finding myself imagining this person living in Portland, Maine. It’s never mentioned in the lyrics, but I found myself wishing I could have conveyed the rest of the scene I pictured - a warmly lit room on a calm overcast evening in a small coastal city. When it came time to make the video I saw our chance and decided we would journey up there and follow that vision as much as we could.”

Speaking about it, songwriter/vocalist Ian Devaney said: "After I dropped out of college I spent a number of years delivering pizzas and waiting tables while I lived at home and tried to get a music career going. One ends up spending a lot of time contending with unrealized dreams and feeling jealousy towards those who have moved on. There’s an inferiority complex that can set in, which if unchecked, can lead down a pretty bitter and self-destructive road. This is a song for driving down that road, as indecision and longing and regret cycle together into mania, until finally, at the end, quiet acceptance and peace wash over."

"As for the recording itself…For those later movements, we messed around with tape machines, running things at different speeds and sometimes backwards, talking about William Basinksi’s ‘Disintegration Loops’ and trying to see how we could achieve a similarly somber, ethereal ambiance, but in a comparatively very small space. This one in particular serves as a good example of how, on the album as a whole, we wanted to find a balance between steady motorik endlessness and more spacious ambient moments." He added

Nation Of Language Announce New LP 'A Way Forward', Stream "Across That Fine Line"

Brooklyn post punk/new wave/synth-pop outfit Nation Of Language have announced the release of their second studio album 'A Way Forward'.

The follow-up to last year's excellent debut Introduction, Presence, was produced by Abe Seiferth and Nick Milhiser of Holy Ghost!, and will be out on November 5th featuring their new song "Across That Fine Line". Pre-order your copy here.

Speaking about the record, band member Ian Devaney explains:  “A Way Forward is an exploration of the band’s relationship to the music of the ’70s, through the lenses of Krautrock and early electronic music. We aimed to more deeply trace the roots of our sound, hoping to learn something from the early influences of our early influences. Experimenting with how they might be reinterpreted in our modern context—looking further backward to find a way forward.

“We drew a lot from the steady locomotive rhythms of bands like Kraftwerk and Neu!, while also looking to less-propulsive electronic artists like Laurie Spiegel and Cluster. The goal was to have a record that felt like a journey, like being on a train that gets lost in a colorful fog, and then suddenly bursts through into different landscapes."

About the new single he said: “‘Across That Fine Line’ is a reflection on that moment when a non-romantic relationship flips into something different. When the air in the room suddenly feels like it changes in an undefinable way. It’s a kind of celebration of that certain joyous panic, and the uncertainty that surfaces right after it. Sonically, it’s meant to feel like running down a hill, just out of control. I had been listening to a lot of Thee Oh Sees at the time of writing it and admiring the way they supercharge Krautrock rhythms and imbue them with a kind of mania, which felt like an appropriate vibe to work with and make our own.”

The opening lines make it seem like the narrator is being criticizing by someone else and they’re retaliation is like "you’ve got to be kidding me, you can’t say that about me! I invented water you punk!" …. sort of. "

“When Aidan suggested ‘Gouge Away’ I was immediately struck by how badly I wanted to rework it in our style, and the whole song mapped itself out in my head right away,” vocalist Ian Devaney says. “I didn’t let myself listen to the original from then until it was fully recorded so I might forget certain details about it, leaving only my impression of it’s foundational elements – the way the quiet, unsettling verses give way to the savage choruses, the way the big transitional guitar line overwhelms you every time it happens.”

In the time since writing “The Wall & I,” itself a product of many such fruitless hours, I have tried to make a mental adjustment to see the struggle itself as a kind of conceptual or performative dance — to make the conscious choice to spend a whole day locked in battle with my own aspirations wrestling against actual outcomes. As good as it feels to just sit down and knock a song out, there is a different level of satisfaction when you feel like you’ve bled a little bit and truly earned it.."
