Guards Announce new LP 'Modern Hymns', Stream "Last Stand"

New York-based fuzz-pop band Guards (the project of Richie Follin from Cults/Willowz) have announced the release of their new album 'Modern Hymns'.

The follow-up to 2013 LP In Guards We Trust, was produced by Follin himself and mixed at The Notch in Los Angeles by Sean O'Brien, and will be out on May 22 via Kobalt. The themes on the album are wide ranging because of the long gestation period, but Follin's welcoming his first child into the world during the recording heavily contributed to the new focus and lyrical concerns.

The record features notable contributions from Mike Shuman (Queens of the Stone Age), Money Mark (Beastie Boys), Patrick Keeler (Raconteurs, Greenhornes), Benji Lysaght (Father John Misty, Beck), James Richardson (MGMT), Matt Schaeffer (Kendrick Lamar), and Brian Oblivion (Cults).

Watch: Demob Happy Unveil Music Video For "Less is More"

Newcastle indie rock/psych/alt band Demob Happy have unleashed the video for their newest single "Less Is More".

The song is part of our current playlist and came out earlier this month, Grab it here.

Speaking about the track, frontman Matt Marcantonio says: “It looks like less, but it sounds like more. You can dissolve it any way you need to, but for us it wasn’t literal. We threw our all at it, doing things that made us uncomfortable, because you wither and die if you don’t keep moving. There’s so much hidden away on this record you’d think we were joking, but we aren’t. Less is More, more or less…”

Mark Hollis, lead singer of Talk Talk, has reportedly died, aged 64

Mark Hollis, frontman of the band Talk Talk, has died at the age of 64, according to reports.

The reports included a tweet from his cousin-in-law, the paediatrician Anthony Costello, and a tribute by Talk Talk’s bassist Paul Webb, who wrote: ‘I am very shocked and saddened to hear the news of the passing of Mark Hollis. Musically he was a genius and it was a honour and a privilege to have been in a band with him. ‘I have not seen Mark for many years, but like many musicians of our generation I have been profoundly influenced by his trailblazing musical ideas. He knew how to create depth of feeling with sound and space like no other. He was one of the greats, if not the greatest.’

Talk Talk’s bassist Mark Webb, aka Rustin Man, paid tribute to Hollis on Instagram. “I am very shocked and saddened to hear the news of the passing of Mark Hollis,” he wrote. “Musically he was a genius and it was a honour and a privilege to have been in a band with him. I have not seen Mark for many years, but like many musicians of our generation I have been profoundly influenced by his trailblazing musical ideas.”

In an interview with Q’s backpages at the time, later republished in the Guardian, Hollis expressed awareness that he could be “a difficult geezer” but that was because he refused to “play that game” that came with the role of musician in the spotlight.

“It’s certainly a reaction to the music that’s around at the moment, ‘cos most of that is shit,” Hollis also said of Spirit of Eden. “It’s only radical in the modern context. It’s not radical compared to what was happening 20 years ago. If we’d have delivered this album to the record company 20 years ago they wouldn’t have batted an eyelid.”

RIP Mr. Hollis
