JG: Lunar Lines is a strange one, it was from around the same time as YMMFSS but sounds nothing like anything else written around that time.
The open string riff thing was something I’d done for a while, with that loose Johnny Marr kind of jangle. It reminds me of earlier Smiths stuff like ‘What Difference Does It Make’. The lyrics are about a late night fight at a bar I used to work at - the instrumental sounded quite nighttime and lunar sonically to me. Not in the ‘Hey Moon’ Molly Nilsson kind of way, but more like the running wild in the night way. The more scary dangerous nighttime thats equally exhilarating as it is scary.
JB: This song was actually called Pin Ups for a long time, until we nabbed it for the band name. Josh had done like 3 versions before this one, but none had quite captured the ‘more scary dangerous nighttime thats equally exhilarating as it is scary’ vibe. For this one Josh came down to mine and Louis’ place in Norfolk (yellows) with some decent mics and we knocked out a ‘proper’ home demo.
JG: Proper drums, well-played parts and properly (I fucking tried for once in my life) mixed as well. It also has all of us singing which a lot of these demos don’t have, it’s nice to hear all of us on it. The guitar sounds are really great too, I remember spending a while getting these right. Usually I’ll do everything in one take and just move on because I’m impatient, but Jesse made me do it all properly for hours and hours. I think it was worth it, it sounds really really good to me. We also used the original vintage synths that were on the ‘Pin Ups’ demo done in Crouch End and they sound incredible. I wish we had them all the time.
JB: So yeah in theory it should sound the best out of the lot… hope you enjoy.
