Frontman Grian Chatten explains: “This song is about the echo chamber and how personality gets stripped away by surrounding approval. People’s opinions get reinforced by constant agreement, and we’re robbed of our ability to feel wrong.
“We’re never really given the education of our own fallibility. People feign these great beliefs in order to appear trendy, as opposed to independently arriving at their own thoughts.
“We were listening to a lot of The Prodigy and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, specifically their song Open Heart Surgery. I was interested in extrapolating those types of chord progressions and capturing this droning, hypnotic feel. That last line repeated over and over, ‘What ya call it’ is a buffer expression that people used here in Dublin. It’s sort of like ‘umm’ or ‘well…’ – it’s what people say when they’re distracted.”

Dublin rock n' roll band Fontaines D.C. have announced the release of their second studio album "A Hero's Death".
The follow-up to last years debut Dogrel, will be out on 31st July through Partisan Records. Pre-order your copy here.
The band's words: "It feels like time hasn’t ticked since we announced our first record just over a year ago. We wrote these songs during the 12 months after finishing ‘Dogrel’ as a necessary reaction to assure ourselves we will always be the band we set out to be. A sincere thank you to everyone who has supported our music since and before then."
The announcement comes with the music video for the title track, starring Irish actor Aidan Gillen, best known for his roles in Game of Thrones, Peaky Blinders, and The Wire.
According to singer Grian Chatten, the album’s name was inspired by a line in a play by Irish writer Brendan Behan, and the title track is an effort to balance sincerity and insincerity. “The song is a list of rules for the self, they’re principles for self-prescribed happiness that can often hang by a thread,” he said in a statement. “It’s ostensibly a positive message, but with repetition comes different meanings, that’s what happens to mantras when you test them over and over.”

Dublin rock n' roll band Fontaines D.C. have announced the release of their debut full-length album 'Dogrel'.
The 11-track record will be out on April 12th via Partisan Records. The band have also revealed the video for the album's lead single "Big". Pre-order your copy here.
According to a press release, Dogrel signifies “a debut which is best enjoyed as a whole; it is very much in the grand tradition of the album as art form, just as this is a band very much in the classic band mold: great singles, an indefatigable work ethic and an utter aversion to standing still.”
"Dogrel is a crude, traditionally Irish working-class form of verse, historically looked down upon by literary critics", the band explains.
Speaking about the video, they said, "we felt that great ambition was a sickness, and we got Grian's 11 year next-door neighbour to say it to you all because he's got the presence of a hundred frontmen."
