“Hang A Cross On Me was made infinitely cooler by the return of Cowboy John - musician, poet, fashion icon, Poon's Head Studio regular, legend. We got Cowboy to feature on Hobo Rocket back in the day. In both songs he insisted on improvising his own lyrics and on only doing one take, and both, of course, were perfect. He meditates on love, life, the universe and everything with his signature fantastical surrealism and cosmic wonder. It's always a pleasure working with him. He is incredibly rare and brilliant and we love him,” says frontman Nick Allbrook.

Barcelona-based beach wave/psych pop band The Zephyr Bones have shared their new single "Verneda Lights".

With "Verneda Lights", the band draws on incandescent guitar lines, glimmering synth and a driving rhythm section to further hone their take on off-center psych-rock. Speaking about the new track, Silva says: "La Verneda is a neighborhood of Barcelona with a certain special light. This song tells the story of an autumnal and lysergic romance. From a cinematic point of view, you get the feeling of sneaking into a party in which the two protagonists dance to the Verneda Lights’ guitar riff."

The Zephyr Bones Announce New LP 'Neon Body', Stream "No One"

Barcelona-based beach wave/psych pop band The Zephyr Bones have announced the release of their second studio album 'Neon Body'.

The follow-up to 2017's Secret Place, was produced by Brian Silva and Santi Garcia, and will be out in October (exact date TBC) through La Castanya. Pre-order your copy here.

The record finds the four-piece, made up of Silva (vocals, guitar and synthesizers), Jossip Tkalcic (guitar and vocals), Marc López (drums), and Carlos Ramos (bass), exploring ideas centered around love, self-affirmation, loss, and hope. Musically, it finds the group tapping into their "beach wave" aesthetic once more, a style of music that they helped nurture alongside a few other groups in Barcelona back in 2017. It is sound and approach to music gravitated around spangled psych-rock reminiscent of the radiant, sunkissed environments that surround the scene.

With the new single, "No One", the band turns the dial on those zipping riffs and fervent rhythms, setting a tempo for the rest of the album – tracklist and artwork to come shortly – with dizzying washes of guitar and synth. It's a fine example of the band's off-center approach to psych-rock that finds scintillating pace inter-locking with a wonderful penchant for melody. Speaking about the first single, Silva says: "'No One' surprises us in the same way that love does when it arrives: that instant connection, an instant match on the first listen. A feast of suggestive guitars and synths that encourages both dancing and humming to a magnetic chorus."

Director, Artur Tort expands on the concept behind the video to say: "We wanted to create a very rhythmic video with ecstatic and contemplative moments. We used natural landscapes, trees, and flowers, creating psychedelic dialogues with the music. We shot in film and exposed it in various frame rates to explore some of the mystical and poetic qualities that it can provide. We combined it with some portraits and screen tests of the musicians. They all have their own character and personality in the way they dress, move and express themselves, and we tried to reflect all that as much as we could."

POND Announce New LP '9', Share New Single/Video "America's Cup"

Australian psychedelic-pop/rock band POND have announced the release of their new album '9'.

The follow-up to 2019's Tasmania, was produced by POND, and mixed by James Ireland & Jay Watson, it will be out on October 1st via Spinning Top Records. Pre-order your copy here.

Speaking about the record, bandleader Nick Allbrook said: “We sort of gave ourselves permission to make something stuffed this time. We’d settled into a pretty tight routine with the last few albums and wanted to shake a boat with this so we started off with filling a few tape reels with some absolutely heinous improvised sonic babble which, after much sifting, became the first few songs of the album. We also wanted to up the tempo.”

“The last few albums have a neat little mantra or repetitive theme. If I was forced to find something like that in 9, I guess it would be ‘biography’ or ‘observation’ — a lot of the lyrics seem to focus on single people’s lives, or the lives of small moments or small things when you zoom real close up and they reveal something deeper. Stuff like my cheap Chinese slippers, or a soiled teddy bear, or Agnes Martin (not to put them in the same category, although maybe Agnes would’ve appreciated it). In the Rorschach test of re-reading lyrics, one thing that sticks out is a fixation on leaving behind a time of golden optimism and uncynical abandon. We can’t look at ourselves the same anymore, and the world we’ve built provides a scary lense for viewing our past.”

Of the new single "America's Cup", he said: "The beat makes me think of a New York street strut, Sesame Street style. But it’s about Fremantle before Alan Bond gave the big ball of gentrification its final shove, when it was cheap and harsh and the broken relics of the pre-87 port city were young, groovy cats in a secret idyll wedged between the river and the sea. It’s also about blokes being different versions of whatever the hell we’ve been taught we’re supposed to be."

Watch: The Polyphonic Spree Drop Music Video For "She’s A Rainbow"

Texas psych pop rock supergroup The Polyphonic Spree have dropped the video for their cover version of The Rolling Stones classic "She’s A Rainbow".

“She’s A Rainbow” has been a staple of The Polyphonic Spree’s live set for years, but DeLaughter’s history with The Rolling Stones goes all the way back to high school, as he told Ultimate Classic Rock today. “I was a freshman in high school. Me and another kid, Kevin Swanson, had a band, and all we played were Stones songs,” he explains. “We got the opportunity to play in front of the lunch crowd, outside in the commons area.  We started the show with ‘Jumping Jack Flash.’ It was all going great. Then we were blazing through ‘Brown Sugar’ when some kid unplugged the power to the PA, and everything went silent, which in turn, turned my failing friend into a cussing dad who just hit his thumb with a hammer. I quickly realized it was all over, no more show, total let down. That was the last time I ever played The Rolling Stones live, until we played ‘She’s A Rainbow.’”

The Polyphonic Spree Announce Surprise Covers Album ‘Afflatus’, Stream "Don't Change"

Texas-based psych pop rock supergroup The Polyphonic Spree have announced the release of a new surprise covers album 'Afflatus'.

This is the band’s first full-length album since 2014’s ‘Psychphonic’, it was recorded live in one evening at the band’s home studio, just before the 2020 lockdown, and features covers of INXS, Daniel Johnston, Rush, Barry Manilow, The Rolling Stones, ABBA, and more. Having just celebrated their 20th anniversary as a band, The Polyphonic Spree are currently at work on a new full-length album of original material, slated for release this fall.

“It was inevitable that the Spree would end up doing this,” said frontman Tim DeLaughter. “We were asked to play a covers show at The Kessler Theater in Dallas and were ready to go, but with the shutdowns starting to happen around the country, we made the last-minute call not to perform. We had all been together for weeks rehearsing, so we decided to get the band together at our home studio and record the entire show live in one take, just to capture it. We knew it was probably going to be the last time we saw each other for a long time, and the next day, everything started to close.”

The record opens with “Don’t Change” by INXS, which the band first performed on their 2010 tour of Australia. “We wanted to pay homage to one of their country’s great artists,” DeLaughter adds, “but it’s also just an awesome song. I love its forward moving, almost gliding feel.”

Never Never Man Detail Debut LP 'Division', Share Short Film

London psych pop band Never Never Man have revealed details for their debut album 'Division'.

The 13-track album will be out on July 20th through Catch 21 Records. Watch: The New Investors Return With New Single/Video "New Beginning"

Danish indie rock/psych pop band The New Investors have returned with their new single "New Beginning", and its accompanied video.

New Beginning is about a group of young hippies who, on top of the apocalypse, venture into the wilderness in search of a new guiding star and a new and alternative way of life far away from growth capitalism and pandemics - a new beginning.

As the title reveals, the single marks a turn back to the beginning for The New Investors. In addition to returning to their duo constellation, Glenn Müller and Søren Tiemroth have gone back to their original expression and unique sound – breezy surfpop mixed with a dreampop aesthetic and an edgy twist of psychedelia.
