Watch: Spunsugar Air New Single/Video "(You Never) Turn Around"

Swedish shoegaze/alt band Spunsugar have aired the video for their new single "(You Never) Turn Around".

The song is out today (February 15)  through Adrian Recordings. Grab it here.

As Oscar Wilde once put it “There is no romance without tragedy” ”(You Never) Turn Around" is synthwave melodrama about the great tragedy of lukewarm indifference. Like Alvvays covering Gary Newman, and ever so macabre – this is Spunsugar remember – it's the trio at their most unashamedly flamboyant. Sad never sounded so spectacular.

"A little less steel, a little more silk: that was the mantra when "(You Never) Turn Around" was recorded. It’s the final song in a trilogy about being in a relationship with a person who’s emotionally unavailable ("Time Enough at Last" and "Dial Up Tone” from the debut album are the first and second parts).

The lyrics are inspired by a hazy memory of a film. In the film the theory goes that when they say goodbye but turn to look at you one last time, you know it’s love.

Make no mistake, this is a true Spunsugar song, so you’re guaranteed a meaty rock song. But this single is pop: dreamier than previous releases and crisper in its construction, with a compelling intro, groovier tempo and the sort of singalong feel that your granny might appreciate. Spunsugar might be accused of having sold our souls, but that don't bother us. We never had one to begin with.” Spunsugar

Spunsugar Detail Debut LP 'Drive-through Chapel', Stream "Belladonna"

Swedish shoegaze/alt band Spunsugar have shared full details for their highly anticipated  debut album 'Drive-through Chapel'.

Featuring the previously shared single "Happier Happyless", the 11-track record will be out via Adian Recordings on Friday 2nd October. Pre-order your copy here.

The record outing sees them take on the dark and pulsing nature of the post-punk sound and deliver it through a completely new and diverse contemporary lens. Produced by Joakim Lindberg at Studio Sickan, Malmö, who has filled it with a rich and textured atmosphere running the length of this new collection, ‘Drive-Through Chapel’ sets itself as one of the most thunderous and anthemic offerings in the Adrian Recordings catalogue.

They are more often compared to Curve, Swervedriver or Ringo Deathstarr rather than the likes of Cocteau Twins or Slowdive. Although heavy on effects, nothing is hidden within the music, including the lyrics. The lyrics are heavy with pop cultural references, stemming from Cordelia’s love for obscure genre films. Often driven by riffs rather than soundscapes, they focus equally on having a prominent bass as well as prominent guitars.

“We call ourselves an alternative rock band with shoegaze influences. Sound wise, imagine if Alternative Nation on MTV 1997 and a drum machine fall into a cotton candy machine. The cotton candy wheel breaks and derails. We grew up farmer offsprings, bible belt kids of fundamentalists and trailer trash in small towns of Sweden. These are our references and this shapes our sound.” – Spunsugar

The band have also shared their new single "Belladonna," a Shoegaze pop tune about suicide you can dance to? Why yes, Belladonna is a nice sing-a-long song about questions about whether those suicidal thoughts are hereditary or if you’re just depressed because you’ve seen your parent not wanting to live anymore. About not feeling that you’re worthy of love. And what a banger it is! The first single by Spunsugar that showcases the singing chops of bass player Felix, who sings in unison with lead singer Elin in the chorus. Keep your ear out for the parts where all three members are singing at the same time. The closest to Beach Boys Spunsugar has ever been.

Check out the album's tracklist and listen to "Belladonna", below.

Watch: Spunsugar Unleash Music Video For "Run"

Swedish shoegaze/alt band Spunsugar have unleashed the video for their current single "Run".

The song is taken from their  upcoming debut album 'Drive-Through Chapel' out on Adrian Recordings. Pre-order it here.

Don’t get fooled by the angry riffs in Run, this songs has a positive thing to say; while we’re busy running away from something bad, we might miss that we’re running into something a lot better. However, getting rid of scary doomsday stories you’ve been fed in the church bench since infancy, is hard. Run is full with blink and you’ll miss them-bible references paired with small town trash imagery. That makes a lot of sense for the most personal song on an album that will be titled Drive-Through Chapel.

Musically, this song might bring to mind Swedish indie darlings Broder Daniel, and a hint of Swervedriver. Some inspiration was garnered from The Chipmunks 1988 song “The Wall” to evoke the right kind of bitter sweet. The limit of how high the BPM of a Shoegaze song is aptly pushed to leave the listener with a taste of blood in their mouth. Like running too fast does. – Spunsugar

Watch: Spunsugar Release New Single/Video "Happier Happyless"

Swedish shoegaze/alt band Spunsugar have released the video for their new single "Happier Happyless".

The song is out today (June 3)  through Adrian Recordings, and is taken from their upcoming debut album 'Drive-through Chapel', out via Adian Recordings on Friday 2nd October. Grab it here.

"Happier Happyless is a sour and sweet song, tackling subjects of pining, happiness and revenge. Having a fittingly slower pace than former Spunsugar singles, this song is also an homage to the shunned 2001 slasher movie Valentine, released a little too late in the post-Scream era. Written with the aim to have “a memorable hook, a thumping synth bass line and a gazey chorus” this is a good introduction to the bands debut album, because of the constant switching of emotional tonality." – Spunsugar
