Surf Rock Is Dead Announce Debut LP 'Existential Playboy', Stream "Diabolik"

Brooklyn-based indie pop/surf rock duo Surf Rock Is Dead (aka Kevin Pariso and Joel Witenberg) have announced the release of their highly-anticipated debut album 'Existential Playboy'.

The self-produced record will be out on May 1st.

Kevin Pariso and Joel Witenberg will tell you they don’t take themselves too seriously. Hence the name of their band, Surf Rock Is Dead (that’s SRiD for short), and the title of their debut album, Existential Playboy. This playfulness informs their music, a hybrid of surf rock, shoegaze, goth, and new wave, through which the duo meditate on the paradoxes of modern life.

While SRiD’s first two EPs, 2015’s SRiD and 2017’s We Have No Friends? were a product of jam sessions, Surf Rock is Dead’s debut album is the result of a more deliberate writing structure.

Much of Existential Playboy, like the majority of SRiD’s music, is about interpersonal relationships, living in New York, and navigating through the world during uncertain times. Existential Playboy is also about confronting mortality. In the wake of a close friend’s death, as the band was in the midst of putting this record together, Witenberg and Pariso reflected even more deeply on the themes that characterize their music. The record’s title is a nod to life’s absurdities. “Why are we doing what we do? What even matters?”

Existential Playboy is a balanced mix of older, jammier tracks, and newer, poppier ones, like the moody and jangly kiss-off, “Diabolik,” or the album’s lead single, the anxiously romantic “Away Message,” on which Pariso sings about new and exciting romantic feelings.

Speaking about their new single "Diabolik", the band explained: "Diabolik is about dealing with some extreme situations we’ve encountered living with various people in NYC. Sometimes you never know what you’re going to get… Whether it be a roommate sleeping on the bathroom floor, a pile of who-knows-what on the living room floor or strangers ending up in YOUR room, sometimes it’s not exactly how you imagined your life. ‘Diabolik’ is a venting of those crazy roommate situations that suck in the moment, but given enough time, actually are pretty damn funny.”

Single of the Week August 28/17: Surf Rock Is Dead Drop "Everything They Said"

Our new Single Of The Week is "Everything They Said", the excellent new track by Brooklyn based indie pop/surf rock duo Surf Rock Is Dead.

The song is taken from their upcoming five-song EP ‘We Have No Friends?’, which will be released October 6th on both vinyl, and digital formats. Vinyl versions include their debut 'SRiD' EP on the b-side. Pre-order your copy here.

“The phrase ‘we have no friends’ is a running joke and half-truth between the band.” Says Pariso about the namesake of the EP. “When we formed the project we would spend late weekend nights jamming and writing music instead of spending it out with friends. Putting time into a creative project definitely can hamper your social life but the idea is that the fruit it bears will be worth the sacrifices.”

New Entry: Surf Rock Is Dead Unveil New Single "Zen A"

Brooklyn based indie pop/surf rock duo Surf Rock Is Dead (aka Kevin Pariso and Joel Witenberg) have unveiled their new single "Zen A".

It is the duo's third single, it follows their also catchy debut single "Equinox" and the summery "Late Risers".

About the song, Pariso says: "With a darker approach to tone and harmonic vibe, the verbed filled layers and delays created a zened out feel that laid the foundation of the song. With Joel singing lead mostly on this track, we felt it immediately widened our sound...when we finished the ending it seemed hilariously huge and borderline inappropriate for the track."

New Entry: Surf Rock Is Dead Air New Single "Late Risers"

Brooklyn based indie pop/surf rock duo Surf Rock Is Dead (aka Kevin Pariso and Joel Witenberg from Chicago and Melbourne) have aired their brand new summery single "Late Risers".

It is the duo's second single, it follows their also catchy debut single "Equinox". Think of DIIV, Beach Fossils, and The Drums...

About the song, Witenberg says: "On this track we were going for a big sound whilst maintaining our live feel; the music itself is really bright while the lyrics dive into dark territory. Once we started jamming on the goofy riffs at the beginning, the track wrote itself."
