Camera Obscura Keyboardist/Singer Carey Lander Dies

Carey Lander, keyboardist for Scottish indie-pop band Camera Obscura has died after a battle with cancer.

The singer, piano and organ player joined the band in 2002. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (a rare type of bone cancer) in 2011 and had raised more than £50,000 to help fund research into the illness.

The band confirmed the news of her death on their Facebook page, saying:

"It is with the greatest sadness, that we must share the news that Carey passed away peacefully this morning after her illness with cancer," wrote the band. "We have lost our friend and band mate, and our deepest sympathy goes out to her partner Kenny, and to all her family and friends.

"She was touched by the way you all got behind her campaign for Sarcoma UK and you can still donate here: https://www.justgiving.com/Carey-Lander

"We shall be continuing to help promote the campaign on her behalf.

"She was left in no doubt how much you all loved and appreciated her, and we'd like to thank you all for the support and kind words you have been sending to us and her. The band, our music, and all of you who have enjoyed it over the years, meant so much to her.

"Thank you all, Tracyanne, Gavin, Kenny and Lee x"

Watch: Camera Obscura Share "Troublemaker" Music Video

Glasgow five-piece Camera Obscura have shared the video for "Troublemaker", taken from their latest album 'Desire Lines', released back in June via 4AD. The song is part of our current playlist.

Inspired by the likes of Tom Baker-era Doctor Who, Blake 7 and ITV's The Tomorrow People, the video was shot on the cheap to fully capture the song's '80s sound, according to longtime director Blair Young, while saving the band money along the way.

"'Troublemaker' is a tribute to the British sci-fi of yesteryear, low budget and futuristic in an '80s way," he says. "We hope we've done these shows justice and it recreates a feel that made geeks of so many of us back in the day."
