Billy Nomates Shares New Single/Video "balance is gone"

British post-punk/alt pop singer/songwriter Tor Maries aka Billy Nomates has shared the video for her brand new single "balance is gone".

The song is taken from her forthcoming sophomore album 'Cacti', set for release on 13th January via Invada Records.

“Writing CACTI took just over a year,” Tor Maries explains. “I wrote very intensely and then none at all. (This seems to be the way I work best). I picked up old drum machines, mapped out things in my kitchen with the same small micro keyboard I always use and then raided the cupboards and rooms at Invada Studios, to play and experiment with old synths, an upright piano, this weird organ thing. I hope everyone finds their own narrative in CACTI. I think it’s about surviving it all.”

On her new single ‘balance is gone’ she said “It’s a lot to ask, balance. Does anybody feel on kilter? Has anybody achieved all that harmony? I don’t think it’s a unique chase. And some days, it’s good to acknowledge it got up and left the room.”

VERO Announce Debut LP 'Unsoothing Interior', Stream "Cupid"

Swedish alt-pop trio VERO have annnounced the release of their debut full-length album 'Unsoothing Interior'.

On the album, Vero reflect the nature of life itself. Their songs prioritise feeling over perfectionism – what feels, or sounds, best – creating a record that tumbles through its contents with a sense of unpredictability, excitement and curiosity. “We don’t want to be super musicians; we want to write the best fucking songs and just have the best energy and show people that we’re having fun,” explains singer and bassist Julia Boman. “We don’t want to be a perfect band, in that sense.”

“Synthesisers are so controlled,” Boman explains. “You have to really be like, ‘Oh, that’s not the right tune’, but when you’re playing the guitar, it can sound pretty chaotic. When we write now, we don’t have much control. We’re not very picky about it.”

“We want to be able to play everything live as it sounds,” adds Gyökeres. “That just really changed the sound of the band too.”

It’s an approach that’s stuck with them into ‘Unsoothing Interior’, an album full of raw guitar riffs that spin and swirl and fizz, and evoke the spirit of artists like Sonic Youth, Garbage and Pixies (lyrically, it boasts a sardonic wit in the same vein as Elastica). 

On the new single “Cupid”, just in time for Valentine’s Day, they say: “Cupid was the first song we wrote that made the album. We had made a couple of demos before, but we weren’t loving them. They all sounded a bit too pretty and safe, so when the drums for Cupid were done, we took a guitar and started making these wheeling, chaotic noises, and that was it. That was the sound that set the tone for our album. The lyrics are a bit dream-like, it’s about lust and control.”

The record is a document of the three musicians’ own experiences, injected with a natural urgency that comes from both the reality in the songs and writing and recording them in a studio paid for by the hour. For its listeners, it acts less as a roadmap through the turbulence and more as a confidante to share the highs and lows, drama and desire with, encompassing everything from sex, friendship and figuring out exactly who you are.

New Entry: VERO Share New Single "BEG!"

Swedish alt-pop trio VERO have shared their new single "BEG!".

Julia Boman, Clara Gyökeres and Amanda Eddestål experiment with genres and references, challenging the idea of what a modern band is supposed to be - this time with artistic freedom. 

These experiments have resulted in a forthcoming debut album, due for worldwide release in Spring 2022, but first comes a brand new 7'' featuring new single 'BEG!' and a brilliant reimagining of Shame’s “Concrete”, two tracks showcasing the band’s move into indie rock territory, while retaining their pop chops. New Entry: Jack Wakeman & The Dreamstriders Air Debut Single "Visions"

Glasgow-based indie rock/alt pop band Jack Wakeman & The Dreamstriders have aired their debut single "Visions".

The type of music a medieval bard would make if he got lost in time and space and woke up in the 21st century, a mellifluous melting pot of heavy synthesisers, chorussed 12 string guitars, punchy drums and melodic bass lines dusted with theatrical arrangements of classical and folk music instrumentation.

Songwriter and composer Jack Wakeman has his material brought to a live audience with the help of his four piece backing band The Dreamstriders on a quest to find the holy grail of sound.

 

Born in Doncaster, Yorkshire Jack grew up on a diet of 60s & 70s pop courtesy of his grandparent’s radio and his Grandad (who had been in a band with Mick Ronson) singing songs on acoustic guitar. Through his teens Jack would hide himself away everyday after school learning to play the various instruments laying around in his grandparent’s garage.

Later disillusioned by the lack of opportunities in the former mining town Jack relocated to Manchester in 2013 where he worked as a session bassist/ guitarist for members of New Order and The Fall plus BC Camplight, Ethan & The Reformation, Granfalloon, Gabrielles Wish, Maddy Storm and more.

 

Depression, anxieties and self destruction brought on by heavy psychedelic drug use and excessive alcohol consumption led to bouts of mental illness overcome in part by turning to paganism explain why Jack’s writing focuses on his apocalyptic optimism, societal standpoints and determined betterment of mental health, often through the lens of folklorish romanticism.
