Watch/Listen: Pixies Release "Bagboy" First New Song in Nine Years

Pixies have released the video for their bran new track "Bagboy", the first in almost ten years. The song has been added to our current playlist www.koolrockradio.com. The band used Twitter to tell fans about the surprise new track, posting:

"ITS TIME !!!
We have something new we'd like you to hear.
Cover your breath, polish your teeth... BAGBOY...."

About the new song, Black Francis says:

"The lyrics, coincidentally, were composed at a Starbucks Coffee in Harvard Square in Cambridge, about a hundred feet from where, 25 years ago, I composed some of the lyrics to an old Pixies song called ‘Break My Body.’ Twenty-five years later, some Starbucks in Harvard Square…I thought that was kind of interesting. The music for the song has been around for a few years. There are some demos I made with Joey and David a few years ago in Los Angeles, related to a film idea that still has yet to see the light of day, although work on the music continued. So a lot of the musical idea had been kicking around for awhile. It’s pretty simple, kind of a blues-based, two-note kind of thing, really."

Former Devo Drummer Alan Myers Dies

Alan Myers, Devo's most well-known drummer, has died on Monday following a battle with cancer. News of Myers' death was first reported on Facebook by his friend Ralph Carney, a jazz musician who knew Myers in Devo's hometown of Akron, Ohio.

Myers became Devo's third drummer when he joined the band in 1976. Known for his precision on the kit, his playing featured on Devo's first seven albums, including 1978's Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! and 1980's Freedom of Choice, which included the single "Whip It." He left the band in 1986 over a lack of creative fulfillment as the group increasingly used electronic drums, according to the 2003 book We Are Devo!

Myers' former bandmate Gerald Casale praised the drummer on Twitter as news of his death spread. The Devo founder called Myers "the most incredible drummer I had the privilege to play with for 10 years. Losing him was like losing an arm."

Continuing, Casale wrote: "I begged him not to quit Devo. He could not tolerate being replaced by the Fairlight and autocratic machine music. I agreed . . . Alan, you were the best – a human metronome and then some."

Drummer Josh Freese, who played in Devo from 2006-2012, has cited Myers as one of his major influences. "An underrated/brilliant drummer," Freese tweeted. "Such an honor playing his parts w/Devo. Godspeed Human Metronome."

RIP Alan Myers "The Human Metronome".

Here's what singer Iva M  posted today on the band’s Facebook page:

Dear planets,

GLITZ will be the final release as Drop Out Venus. The reason for this is that due to secret circumstances we felt that it was better to start afresh.
Thank you to all the amazing people who have supported us and me personally. I can honestly say that I haven't gone for more than two days in the last six months without receiving a message or an e-mail or a letter from someone to express love and support. That has been most special and most humbling to me.
I will without a doubt still be making music with Chris as we have shared a soul since we were 16 years old, but we need a clean slate. We'll keep you posted.

See you on the other side

Watch: Yeah Yeah Yeahs Reveal "Despair" Music Video

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have unveiled the video for their new single "Despair", taken from their latest album 'Mosquito' released back in April via Interscope.

It is the first-ever video filmed atop the Empire State Building, and was directed by Patrick Daughters. Watch it below.

About the video, Karen O said: "I felt like I could give as personal a performance because of our history together. It was important to us that it felt intimate despite being filmed at one of NYC’s most famous landmarks and an international cultural icon. It was my first-ever trip up to the top of the ESB, top of the world, we were up there from 3am to sunrise, I’m guessing very few get to see that view from up there at those hours."

"I gotta say I had a ‘the impossible is possible’ moment up there with Nick and Brian. If someone would have sat us down at the Mars Bar years back and told us that we’d be performing our music on the top of the Empire State Building one day, we probably would have thought that’s the stuff that dreams are made of, not us, no way."

Kitchens of Distinction Reveal New Album Is Almost Done

British band Kitchens of Distinction have revealed via twitter that their upcoming fifth studio album (and their first in 19 years) has been mastered and is pretty much finished.

The 10 track new album — which will be KOD's first release since 1994's Cowboys and Aliens — will be released later this year through 3 Loop music and it's hoped to be available on different formats (digital/CD/vinyl).

The band have also confirmed the album has already a title and cover, but all will be revealed soon.

About the sound of the new recording, vocalist Patrick Fitzgerald revealed:

"Jules thinks it sounds nothing like old Kitchens, but like a new version sucked through time and space. Dan said he thought it would fit neatly between Death of Cool and Cowboys. Me? Well it certainly sounds like nothing I’ve recorded these past stephenhero years, so I’m glad as I wanted a change. It’s definitely a hark back to the sonic noise of KOD, but the lyrics are wiser, and the songs less fraught. But don’t get me wrong, they are no less intense."

Fitzgerald, Swales and drummer Dan Goodwin formed KOD in South London in 1985 and released their first single, “The Last Gasp Death Shuffle,” in 1987. Between 1989 and 1994, the trio released four studio albums before disbanding in 1996 following the release of final single "Feel My Genie."

Album of the Week June 17/13 - Midnight Juggernauts "Uncanny Valley"

Our new Album of the Week is Australian band Midnight Juggernauts brand new album album 'Uncanny Valley', out now in Australia and France (Record Makers).

In robotic engineering and CGI, the Uncanny Valley is a hypothesis coined by legendary roboticist Masahiro Mori in 1970 - he wrote in his work 'Bukimi no Tani Gensh: "I have noticed that, in climbing toward the goal of making robots appear human, our affinity for them increases until we come to a valley, which I call the uncanny valley."

This "uncanny valley" is a phenomena in which human acceptance of robots grows more welcoming, the more human their appearance, until they become too human, in which there's suddenly a precipitous plunge from acceptance to revulsion.

'Uncanny Valley' marks Midnight Juggernauts' third full-length journey into the deep, once again piloting their glittery kosmische musik far into known cosmos and unknown genre. The band began rolling tape between a church nestled in the Loire Valley in the French countryside and various studios in Melbourne and Sydney, the resulting record is another LP that sounds uniquely Midnight Juggernauts. Situated at a self-styled nexus between genre and era, 'Uncanny Valley' is 43 minutes of warm-hearted cold wave, interstellar harmony's, early 1950's house, steeped in the darkness of dusty Giallo soundtracks, audio spomeniks at once futuristic and rustic, a bold musical future envisaged through a soundtrack to a forgotten Eastern Bloc Tarkovsky film, sifting through the ruins of LPs past.

Tracklist:

1. HCL
2. Ballad of the War Machine
3. Memorium
4. Streets of Babylon
5. Sugar and Bullets
6. Master of Gold
7. Systematic
8. Deep Blue Lines
9. Another Land
10. Melodiya

New Order's Bernard Sumner To Publish Autobiography Next Year

Bernard Sumner will release his autobiography in 2014 telling stories of Joy Division and New Order.

According to The Bookseller, Sumner has signed a deal with Transworld to publish the as-yet-untitled book, which promises to "explore Sumner's formation of Joy Division alongside Ian Curtis, his relationship with bandmate Peter Hook, and the inspiration for ‘Blue Monday,’ the biggest selling 12-inch single of all time."

Sumner told the publication:

"Joy Division and New Order have both left quite a legacy but up until now I've been happy to let the music speak for itself. Somehow it feels like the right time to give my personal perspective both on my own life story and the many bands I've been in."

In related news, ex-bandmate Peter Hook's book Unknown Pleasures: Inside Joy Division was published last year and he's planning a follow-up on New Order.
